Hello!
My fiance and I got engaged about three weeks ago, and I have a few questions.
Do you shower with your ring?
Do you sleep with your ring?
Thanks!
I never take my ring off.. initially I stopped sleeping with it on b/c the lady in the store said fibers will get on the diamond but I dont want to loose it and plus I just dont want to take it off :-). Just clean it with a toothbrush/dishwashing liquid in the morning and it will shine like new even after you condition your hair and get gunk on it.
I almost never take mine off, but I know my sister takes hers off to shower every day. (I do think she sleeps with it.)
I NEVER take mine off! I shower with it, sleep with and go to the gym with it on (but I wear gloves to prevent excess scratches on the gold from the weights)
@frozen yogurt, you're not alone. I take mine off when I sleep, shower, go to the gym, do dishes... maybe I take it off too much, but I've been really careful about it. My ring is tanzanite, which is apparently more brittle than other gems, so I'm pretty paranoid about it.
I take mine off when I shower for sure, or do dishes or cook or anything that would get it dirty, but I usually do sleep with it on. Basically I just try to keep it as safe and as clean as possible so I don't do any damage to it. Wouldn't want to harm my precious =)
I take mine off when I shower and sleep, and sometimes when I'm doing dishes. I keep the ring box FI gave it to me in on my dresser and always stash it there when sleeping or showering. I don't want to damage it while I sleep, as I toss and turn A LOT.
I shower and sleep with my ring on. I hadn't heard about the fibers things about sleeping with it before. But sometimes when I shower the conditioner makes my ring slippery and that makes me nervous, but I just double check for it a lot to make sure it's still there and didn't fall off or anything. But I generally don't take it off.
I am the ultimate paranoid bride to be. Would you believe I don't wear my ring the majority of the time? Basically I wear my ring only if I'm going out...excluding when I go to the gym of course.
I wear pretty much all the time even when I sleep. However, I do take it off when in yoga class; and to shower and when cooking - I have platinum band and I grab pots and pans where the metals clank and scratches the ring. Generally, I'm not afraid of water, but I am afraid of the platinum getting scratched by coming in contact with other metals/hard surfaces.
I only take mine off when I shower and when I go to work - I'm a waitress. I sleep in it because I hate having it off for that long. I take it off when I shower because I'm afraid my slippery products will make it come off, plus when I get out the shower I put on lotion and hair products that would dull it, so I just do my whole getting ready thing with my ring in its box on my sink. I wear it on a necklace when I work because I often handle food and I don't want it to get dirty. I should probably take it off when cooking and cleaning but I'd rather scratch it a little than lose it, and I lose everything!
I take it off to shower because I don't want it to fall off with the conditioners and stuff! Other than that I rarely take it off... sometimes when I cook if it's going to get slimy.
When I went to have it's 6 month checkup/cleaning... just standing there for 15 minutes with it off felt so incredibly strange....
Thanks, ladies.
I've been taking it off to shower and sleep. I shower right before I sleep, so I take it off, put it in the ring box, shower, go to sleep. When I wake up, the first thing I do after turning off my alarm (usually after Mr. Anchovies pokes me, since I never hear it) is put on my glasses, then my ring.
There were a couple of times that I went to the gym without it, but mainly because I was afraid of someone seeing it and wanting to take it!
Anyone afraid of getting mugged? Or is that just me?
I've been a few sketchy situations (namely needing gas while driving through the wrong side of town) and in that case I twisted the stone (sapphire) so it looked like I was wearing a band.
I also never take mine off (which gets complicated when I'm in the middle of making meat balls and I realize its getting gunky!) but I try to clean it a lot!
I take it off to shower, when cooking and to sleep and currently I'm taking it off whilst I'm working - but I do use my hands a lot and I don't want it to slip off and fall in some spider crevasse backstage.
I don't worry so much about being mugged but I'll turn the stone around just in case if I'm feeling a bit worried. But usually I'm fine.
I may not be the best person to give advice since I practically NEVER take mine off. The only exception is when making meatballs or hamburgers and sometimes when painting. I only took it to be cleaned for the first time last week (I've had it for 2 years). I felt so naked without it for the day it was at the shop but it looks so shiney now. I guess I figure it needs to be part of my life and understand it will get a bit scratched overtime so I may as well enjoy wearing it.
i also take mine off for sleeping, showering, and cooking. i just don't want to lose it down the drain or get it all dirty. i sometimes take it off at work too (on the rare occasion i am working with my hands and not in front of a computer). i have come to terms with it getting scratched, but i want to avoid that as much as possible!!!
I wear my e-ring and wedding band to sleep, shower, and go to the gym.
I take them both off when I'm working with raw meat, b/c I'm worried about contamination issues - my wedding band is a channel-set eternity band, so there are lots of crevices!
I never take mine off. I've had mine for like a year and a half now and wear and tear will happen, so I just roll with it. Can't protect it forever! And my mom always said wha'ts the point in having it if you don't get to show it off everywhere you go? =]. I can always have it spiffed up. I could never just stash it in a box in my locker at the gym--but mine doesn't get in the way or anything, either. And I'm not afraid of being mugged. I work in a VERY ghetto area and if I'm going out to lunch or feel weird and I'm alone, I'll turn it inside out, but that's only happened like twice. But is someone going to mug me for this? no. If i had a 5 carat stone and walked down an alley alone? Yeah, maybe =]. I doubt the average joe mugger is staring at peoples e-rings and picks his targets like that
A woman at a jewelery store told me that without fail EVERY woman who lost their engagement ring was because they made a habit of taking it off.
Needless to say, even though I work with my hands with very corrosive chemicals and things, she scared me into never taking it off.
Well, except to clean it with isopropanol and a toothbrush :)
I don't have one yet, but I plan to only take it off for showering/getting ready. Not because I'm afraid to lose it down the drain (drain cover anyone?) but because I have really long hair and I hate trying to wash it or fix it when it is getting stuck in jewelry. Plus, I have a habit of taking off/putting on all my jewelry before and after my shower, so I don't think I'll forget. As for cooking/cleaning... I don't do it that much and I'm not really a get-my-hands-in-meatloaf kind of girl. :)
i take it off for shower, sleep, cooking, and if i feel that something is dangerous to it. i have an old diamond though, and they cut them so they're weaker back then. i'll probably be less paranoid after i get it recut.
No e-ring yet, but my dad gave me a really nice ring that I've worn since I was 16 ('wear this until you find a guy as good as me to replace it' when I was offically supposed to be allowed to start dating... oh the things dad never knew!), and I take it off to sleep and shower. And when I knead bread dough. I'm a glasses wearer, so my habit has become tucking it on the stem of my glasses whenever I take it off. With the way my stems cross over each other, it can't get off (trust me, I've tried) until I open them in the morning to put on. Several times it has slipped off (I have slender knuckles) when washing my hands and nearly gone down drains - which makes me afraid to wear it in the shower - and I am a fitful sleeper and would probably take it off in my sleep and lose it in the covers if I tried to sleep in it (I'm one of those people who can go to sleep in a sweatshirt, pjs, and socks and wake up wearing nothing but underwear... it's amazing what I take off in my sleep HAH!). I'll treat my e-ring exactly the same way. I DO feel naked without my ring, and check that it's on my glasses every night before going to bed. :) 8 years counting and no loses yet...
I take my rings off to clean them, if I am usually harsh chemicals, or like alot of the other girls, working with bread dough or ground meat. I used to take mine off ALL the time, including showering and washing dishes, but then I started thinking - my mom, MIL, grandmothers never take/took theirs off, so what the heck, if it gets dirty, it gets dirty and I'll clean it. Just soak your ring(s) in hot water and dishsoap for a few minutes and then clean with a soft toothbrush - rinse clean with hot water, pat dry on a paper towel and you are good to go!
I take my ring off for showering, sleeping, cooking, and anything messy. I don't want to be cleaning bread dough out of the prongs...
I used to only take my ring off to sleep and do dishes, until I chipped my stone:

Now I take my ring off when I come home and put it in the box, and put it back on when I leave the house. There is no reason to keep it on when I am home, and as long as I put it in one specific safe place, I am not afraid to lose it.
I don't wear my ring when I sleep, shower, go to the gym, do yard work, do the dishes, or do anything else dirty. When I take it off, its in one of two places, so it won't get lost.
the girl at kays where mine diamond came from said no shower no pool no ocean,or jacuzzi, no bleach.
The chlorine and bleach can effect the clariety of your diamond and salt is not good for it.
I just got mine a week ago (!!!) and I only take it off when I shower (don't want conditioner to wash it down the drain), when I'm lifting weights at the gym, and doing sensory play with my kids (I'm a special needs teacher- sensory play includes sand, shaving foam, corn starch + water i.e. anything with weird textures).
I only take mine off when I sleep and when I shower. I have a little bowl next to the bathroom sink where I put it while I shower and a little bowl on my nightstand, so I'm not too worried about losing it - I have a routine.
I pretty much wear mine all the time. The only times that I take it off are when we go golfing (it feel funny under my glove), when we go kayaking, and when I am in the midst of making something messy like homemade fondant. Sometimes I will be mowing and my FH will get home and make me take it off and he will take it inside and put it away.
To clean it I use an old toothbrush head from my spinbrush and some bodywash while I am in the shower. I don't actually turn the toothbrush on, just use the bristles since they are soft and I am to lazy to actually go get a sleaner for it. It is always super shiny when I clean it though.
I should probably take my ring off to sleep since I scratch not only myself, but my FH with it... I love my princess cut, but geeze it hurts!
My ring routine: No shower. Mostly no sleeping (keep it in the box it came in) unless I'm on vacation or elsewhere.
Cleaning once a week in the solution w/the little brush my jeweler gave me. I have a cushion cut diamond and he also taught me how to test the stone each week to make sure the setting wasn't getting loose. He recommends bringing it in every couple months so he can check it (not sure if i'll do that). I try not to wear it when cleaning or doing stuff around the house to avoid getting the platinum banged up or hurt the setting.
Congrats and enjoy your ring!!
I never shower or sleep with mine on-mostly because the stone sticks way out & I'll injury myself. I keep it on all day, but I keep it off for showering & sleeping.
I shower with it on, sleep with it on, go to the gym with it on... pretty much always have it on besides when I cook or put on lotion.
Does anyone know the right answer to this? Should I be taking it off when I sleep or shower!?
I wear it every time I go outdoors.. and take it off all the time at home.
When I worked as a waitress I stopped wearing it to work as I worked a lot of weddings and was constantly cleaning things and didn't want my ring all mucky.
When I first got it I did not let one thing ... sprays, oils, food ... nothing, touch it! I was so paranoid and careful. I even remember going to the ladies room and washing my hands for the first time (with the ring on) and I'm like ... can I wash my hands? HOW!!!!!!!!!! Lol.
Fast forward 7 months. I am upset with myself for two reasons, #1 is that platinum does scratch and if you are not really careful ... it will look scratched - I became careless apparently and #2 Once you let oils and other substances touch your ring ... sometimes the residue will never come out of the setting. Even with professional cleaning.
I do know that when I clean my ring with dish soap that the jeweler I take it to for professional cleanings gets upset and asks me why I did that ... lol. She can see it on my ring. So I don't do that anymore.
Forgot to add ... now I only wear my ring when I leave the house. I hate to have it on because it's in my way. Am I awful? Plus ... I also have long hair and it is a pain to wear it in the shower ...
I do everything with my ring on, except for making meatballs or something. If I went swimming at the beach I MIGHT consider leaving it at home, but for the most part those aren't very common activities for me. I did lose my ring once while cooking (but found it 10 days later!) Still no idea how it happened since the ring never slipped off before... but I got it resized again and even while i shower it's pretty secure. I'm not too worried about losing it in the shower because we have a drain strainer thing that not even hair can get through. I'd hear it clunk and pick it up or fish it out lol I dont like being without my ring!
Girl...I never take it off, its always on my finger!! It's easier to lose if your not wearing it!
