You can always purchase a personal articles policy, which is intended to cover you valuable items.  Or, most companies let you add “riders” to existing policies.  So you could probably add ring coverage to your auto policy.

My ring is not on our home insurance. I have a stand alone policy. It doesn’t matter if you don’t live together, or live with your parents, you can still get it insured. I’m in the UK so my broker won’t be of much help for you

haha

I didn’t have anything to do with my ring or the picking or purchase of it, so I feel getting it appraised would be kind of sneaky way of finding out how much my fiance spent on it. I also don’t think mine is worth enough to insure. I told him MANY times that I will be mad if he spent more than a few hundred bucks on my ring, and I am pretty sure he listened to my wishes.

Do you people really have rings that are worth thousands?? I am not judging, I just can’t believe it. I would be way too afraid of losing it or having it stolen or flushing it down the toilet or something!!

mskalinin – yep, with a diamond, most rings are going to be worth thousands, but an appraisal will not actually tell you how much he spent. My engagement ring is appraised for about 25% more than we paid for it and my wedding band I purchased from an estate jeweler for a fourth of retail price.

My ring has six diamonds in the band… but they are very small. I don’t know anything about jewelry so I can’t say what carat they might be, but I just never thought they would be worth enough to get it insured. The main stone is a peridot, a beautiful but not very expensive stone. The band itself is 10kt yellow and white gold together.

Am I right in thinking I don’t need to get this thing insured?? He says he doesn’t think its necessary.

I just got mine insured through Jeweler’s Mutual. Mine was 90 bucks for the year (it varies by the value – my ring was pricey, so this is a great deal) and covers loss, theft, damage, etc. You do need to know the price of the ring, though! They are easy to work with and you do all of the paper work online. Check them out!

Oooh yes, get it insured! Gosh, I got my ring in June, and we just moved to VA this last week.  When we originally looked up insuring the ring in FL vs VA, we found out that in VA the insurance is like, less than half the FL price…holy moly!  So, we waited until now, and we’re going to get that done asap!

Get it insured – you never know what might happen, but you want to be covered should it be lost/stolen/diamond fall out, etc. We just used our insurace agent that our car and home owner’s insurance is through (at the time we had renter’s insurance). It’s a completely separate policy from everything else, and the cost is very minimal to insure it!

Thank you so much for this question! I’m going to check out Jewelers Mutual, because my homeowner’s insurance company won’t do a “rider” policy — they only add to the value of the property, and said it only covers things like if my house was broken into, or if there was a fire. What the heck? My auto insurance doesn’t seem to have it either. I asked our jeweler if they had any recommendations, but they didn’t. So I really appreciate the lead, SweetheartDealer! And all online?? Bonus!!
