I think you should definately shop around - my homeowners' is through Safeco, and the rider for my e-ring is an extra $250 a year, which covers any kind of loss (even non-theft related loss) or damage, not to include acts of war or detonation of a nuclear weapon even if not an act of war (!!) The appraised value of my ring is over $15,000, so I'm not paying even 2% of that per year. Of course I have quite a lot of coverage through Safeco already (home, contents, and two cars) and have used them for 15 years so that may make a difference.
It's totally worth it for me (think about it, it will take 60 years for the premiums to equal the price of the ring) because the fact is it would be difficult for us to replace the ring without the insurance. And I know it works - I have a friend who lost hers in a swamp (she's a bird counter for the Audubon Society) last year, and her insurance paid out the appraised value plus some additional for inflation, and she had a wonderful new ring a month later.
Suzanno~I think we have the same policy...I forgot to mention the acts of war! It cracked me up. I have misplaced my ring twice and the second time was two weeks after I had it insured and they still believed me. They were two days away from cutting me a check for the full amount when I found it. Next time I'm probably going to be called Chicken Little, but oh well, my insurance was great about it when I needed them to be.
