@natashakay:  I’m sorry to hear you are having problems with the purchase of your ring.

You will have to pay 25% tax at customs to import jewellery into the UK from the US. 20% of this is VAT and the other 5% is a jewellery tax. I’m sorry if this has taken your boyfriend by surprise 🙁

Just remember that at the end of the day it doesn’t matter whether your ring gets here by a certain date – what’s important is that your boyfriend loves you and soon you will be getting engaged! Yay!

@natashakay:  that’s the bad thing about buying jewelry internationally, you have to pay duties. I’m sorry ):

I really feel for you and purchased jewelrey quite a few times from the States myself having to pay ginormous Customs fees and VAT. It makes me so angry. Living in the UK is just one massive pisstaking RIP OFF. Forget Customs taxes, they will charge a tax for breathing air soon no doubt.

I understand what you are saying. Design wise there is a lot more choice in the US and it is tempting to buy. And why shouldn’t we? I AM materialistic (if that is what is called) when it comes to paying so much at the Customs. I guess I am just frustrated with the tax system where you are taxed as you earn, then taxed again and then taxed some more. But I guess that’s a subject for another thread. Anyway, congratulations on your engagement!!!

Its ok and will be ok. I went through a similar situation. FI was sold the wrong diamond. We fought tooth and nail to get it fixed.
