I think pics in downtown would be awesome! What are you looking for though? Urban, outdoorsy...?
There's Huntington Gardens and Descanso Gardens, both I think charge pro pic fees, but I've seen lots of people say they've taken pro pics there without paying and no one cared. Or Old Town in Pasadena. Occidental College in Eagle Rock (between Pasadena and Glendale) has a gorgeous campus. Or somewhere around the Rose Bowl?
Just some thoughts.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'd love to take pics around the financial district downtown, but I think more natural/"outdoorsy" settings would probably reflect us better. :) We'll see if we can get away with the Huntington!
The Getty would be gorgeous! Although I heard that you can't officially take "professional" photos there, so your photog will have to pretend he is your buddy just taking casual snapshots :) Would be worth it though ...
Check out Disney Concert Hall downtown. Is it a perfect location! We shot our engagement photos there last November, and they turned out beautifully. The lighting is awesome, and there's a public park/garden on the west side of the building that's just beautiful. Good luck!
@bgsualum: that's exactly where we were thinking when we thought of downtown LA! I think I love every picture I've seen there ;).
So here's another question: if we're basically hippies at heart but love the look of downtown LA/Old Town Pasadena (more urban style backdrops) for engagement pics... what should we wear? :)
downtown Claremont and the Claremont colleges are gorgeous too, and would make great photo backdrops. Not too bad a drive either, just hop on the 210 from Pasadena and then take the 57 down to Claremont, if I remember right (it's been a while since I've lived in LA).
I am also in the SGV area and for my engagement shoot, we did 3 locations: Union Station, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the area around Ambassador Auditorium. The Ambassador Auditorium is not well known, but the grounds are gorgeous. It has changed ownership in the last couple of years so I am not certain if they still allow people to take pictures there, but it's worth a try to go there and try to get some pics in. These three places had a large variety of settings to take pictures in.
As for dress, we actually wore two different outfits. One more formal looking for the downtown area and one more casual for the garden setting. Here is the sign in book I made w/the pics as reference.

I would have so so so loved to have done some photos at the Huntington. Their Chinese Garden is spectacular! Also, are there any locations that are particularly important or special for the two of you? Even your apartment or the first place you went on a date could be lovely!

We're probably going to wait until December to schedule our engagement photo shoot (school and work schedules are crazy) but was looking to get some ideas for locations. Beach shots are probably not our top choice due to the weather (brrrrr) but does anyone have any good outdoor alternatives? We're in Pasadena so ideally we'd like to stay in the downtown/SGV area rather than heading out to the westside. TIA!
