You sound like us! We had ours yesterday, and it was certainly an experience. It’s really strange to have my photo taken voluntarily (I’m that person who ducks out of shot at parties). Maybe get in the romantic mood before your head out, by which I mean do something romantic in private and try to take that feeling with you to the shoot. We’re not big on PDAs and so it took a long time for us to get ‘romantic’ in front of the camera, but maybe a nice breakfast together or exchanging little love notes would have set the mood. Also remember, these are your photos, they can’t be used against you. So you don’t need to worry “is someone going to post this on Facebook” or whatever. My photo face is usually me looking uncomfortable and/or worried, so I think that’s what stuffs up my photos half the time.

FI and I are so not photogenic, and we’re also not into PDA. The first few minutes were awkward (one hour session), but after a while we relaxed and it was like we weren’t even being photographed. I was nervous that they’d look bad, but our pictures turned out great and it was a fun experience.

Our photographer said that engagement sessions are like camera practice before the wedding. You learn how to take direction, how to smile so you don’t look goofy and awkward (like me), and how to show your romantic side on camera without being cheesy.

We went out to dinner before our session, taking care not to spill on our outfits, and got to the park early and just hung out while we waited for our photographer to arrive.

Oh, and it helped that we only did two poses where we faced directly at the camera/portrait style. The rest were just pictures of us being lovey-dovey in the park. Maybe request a more casual theme?
