Thanks for the update! I’ve been looking at these, and I’m slightly terrified – I wax my eyebrows, and that’s it. But maybe I’ll give the veet one a try.

Have you come across any advice for preventing ingrowns? I try to exfoliate to prevent them from shaving, but not sure if there’s something more extreme needed for epilating.

ETA – FWIW, as I was looking at other epilator reviews, several said the underarms hurt much less than other areas. So it might not be that bad!

@ravenwait: Gah. *shudder*  I’m not sure I even want to think about that. πŸ˜‰

I never saw your original post, but thanks for the info. Glad it worked well for you, I am so wary of so many of those kind of products.

I’ve been epilating for a while now; sometimes I don’t have the time, and shave, but I always do it for holidays etc and really rate it.

Re underarms: I can barely feel it when I epilate my legs (and I’ve never heard of a comfort spray lol); it literally doesn’t feel like anything to me, all I can feel is the epilator moving against my skin. I find my bikini line MUCH more painful; I have a VERY high threshold, and would put a bikini wax at 3/10 max (nearly fell asleep; I found it quite relaxing), but for me, epilating my bikini line is maybe a 6/10 (I sweat a bit and find it sore). My underarms were probably about a 7/10, and they bled :-s I’ve not done my underarms since as I get very good, clean results shaving, and it takes me all of two seconds to shave. So for me, the pain isn’t worth the pay-off! But it isn’t horribly painful, it’s bearable, I just didn’t like the blood, so I’d give it a go; worst case scenario it hurts like hell and you don’t do it again πŸ˜‰

@barbie86: Thanks – maybe the reviews I read were not so accurate! Hm. Maybe I should bite the bullet and do waxing for the underarms. It might be easier with someone else pulling. Do you think the pain/bleeding is something that may get better over time?

I guess it might as I think like waxing that epilating makes the hair grow back finer eventually, and I think it’s also a case of getting used to it; now I’ve done my bikini line a few times it’s not nearly as bad. I think one problem I had with my underarms is that the hair there is quite thick for me (thicker than my bikini line even), and I found it difficult to pull the skin taught.

Like I said I think it’s definitely worth a go, worst-case scenario you’ll decide not to do it again!

I just bought my epilator this week and so far have tested it everywhere but “down there” I just finished my underarms…and they really weren’t bad at all. I would probably say it was a 4-5 discomfort level on a scale of ten. I need to do my bikini are next and let yall know…but so far, so good! πŸ™‚

So I just bit the bullet and ordered one of these things. I am pretty sure I will cry like a little girl the first time. I think I just need to see if I can out-will the pain response.

I know it will probably get better. I used to cry when I had my eyebrows waxed too (well, my eyes teared up and I bled just a little.. the lady I go to said she used to feel so bad.)  Now I go into it like a champ.

Last night, I gave epilation a try.

Honestly, the pain wasn’t bad, although it got old quick. But I didn’t try underarms or bikini line.

However… In addition to the lots of little red bumps I got, these raised welt things appeared about 5 minutes after I was done! I don’t think I was pinching the skin, I was really careful not to push in… they kind of looked like tiny bug bites, round and swollen and pale. They itched like crazy. I washed and applied some TendSkin once I was done, even took a benadryl because I was worried I’d scratch during the night.

Overnight, the tiny red spots went away, and the welts went down a bit.. but the welts are red now. I’m hoping they’ll be gone tomorrow.

So far, I’m not too impressed. πŸ™  The epilator definitely thinned the hair, but there’s plenty remaining, even though I went against the growth and back over repeatedly. I’m going to need to go in for round two once the little spots have gone down.

Epilating ladies… any advice?

Yikes. Now the bumps look like little breakouts. Epi-fail.
