I personally enjoy the look of handwritten escort cards, place cards, etc. It just adds more personality to everything. I handwrote the word recipes on the little recipe books I made for my favors in my crappy cursive handwriting and everyone thought they looked great. So I say go for writing them out yourself, especially if that will help save you time and stress later on! You did great on your other DIY projects, I'm sure your escort cards will turn out just as beautifully!
I don't think that handwriting escort cards is cheap-looking either. I think it's charming, actually. :o)
Since you're using perforated cards, I would recommend taking the "fuzzy" edges off with a straight edge or paper trimmer. That will give them a cleaner, more polished look. I'm sure they'll look fantastic!
If your FMIL asks you where you got them done, just tell her you had them custom-made at a little place called "Yours Truly". ;o)

I probably should have thought about this more than two weeks before the wedding, but I decided yesterday to do escort cards (I had originally planned to just do a seating list). My plan is to get place cards from office depot ($4.99 a box!) and a border punch and embellish them with some ribbon. I'm considering hand writing them, since we don't have a printer (it recently died a horrible death) and I don't really have time to sit and type out 100 of these things, drag the whole mess to kinkos, figure out how to print it, etc etc etc. They are 6 to a sheet and perforated, so I can't do any embellishing prior to printing. My mom has a printer, but she is in Raleigh, and we won't be there until late next Tuesday night. So if I handwrite them I can get them basically done before we leave for NC, whereas if I want to print them, I have to do them 3 days before the wedding- printing them, punching them, decorating them. It seems like a lot of work when we'll undoubtedly have a lot of other stuff to be doing.
SO, my question, after all of that is, do you guys think that handwritten escort cards look cheap/t*cky? Please, be honest. I don't think they look bad (I actually kind of like them), but my inlaws are kind of snooty and might think that we were just being cheap.

If we do print them, we'll print in Feel Script (like Mrs. Shortcake used). I don't know if that makes a difference...
