I guess I don't really know what escort cards are. Does it mean that someone will literally take the card and escort the person to the table?
If I don't do that, what are other options? At my brother's wedding they just had different sheets of paper with everyone's name and table. I'd like something a little easier to look at and a little more interesting.
Escort cards are indeed just a different form of a seating chart. You could design something cute to match your theme in Illustrator or photoshop and have it blown up big at kinkos, then get a nice frame for it at aaron brothers or michaels and put it on an easel so it looks like a piece of art, but instead is your seating chart...just an idea...
A seating chart is practical & probably the most hassle-free, but you're right that you can make it a little more fun.
You can do anything as simple as printing out little table-tent folded cards that has the guest's name and table number they are sitting at. You can buy them at Staples or any office supply store in nice paper stock and wedding-like borders and run them through a printer.
Some people get creative and do things like print the names and table numbers & attach them to drink umbrellas, then stick them in a big box of sand.
Or you can tie it into your favor. I've been to weddings where my name and table number was printed and put in a picture frame, so it served double-duty as my escort card and wedding favor.
I think traditional, formal weddings a long time ago actually had someone escort you to your table. Nowadays, you just set the cards out at the entrance of the reception and everyone finds their name and seats themselves. Having a person or two with the master seating chart and list near the table to help direct guests is a good idea, though. Good luck!
