An escort card tells someone or a couple which table they will be sitting at.
A placecard tells someone which seat they will be seated at within that table.
Escort cards are usually grabbed by the person themselves prior to entering the reception. Placecards should already be pre-placed at the table. Once they get to the table, the guest looks for their name on the placecard and takes the seat in front of it.
Sometimes people (like me) only have escort cards, just assign tables and not actual seats. If your guests had to choose their meal ahead of time, it helps to have place cards and seats assigned, or mark their escort cards with their meal selection.

So wait, what is an escort card? The place card tells people where to sit at the receptions, right?
