Yesterday I posted about a NWR Etsy Idea (plus size clothing). That is now a no-go due to a lot of reasons however.. I’ve now have a new idea hive and I want your feedback.
First a little background: I’m a newlywed (2.5 months actually) and I really wanted a way to honor my grandfather and my husbands grandmother at our wedding. I poured over ideas but decided to do a locket in the end because we had a destination wedding in central park and set up space was limited.
I’m now currently in England (where my husband is from) visiting until I get my immigration sorted out. I have nothing to do for atleast the next three months and my income is lacking – as well as my patience from going to a full time worker and student to a housewife in an area where I know no one. I’m not knocking housewifes, I’m just saying that since we have no current plans for children and we are living with his parents and lack our own ‘space’ – I’m finding myself bored.
So.. I’ve spent the last week trying to come up with something to take up my time and that I could share with others – at markets or Etsy. The problem is Etsy seems to have everything! I really fell in love with wedding cake toppers as we didn’t have one at our wedding and I love the cute birds in nests options floating around. I thought ‘I’ll do that!’ but its being done beautifully and I don’t want to copy someone elses idea. Then I started thinking about family trees. The only family tree options I came across in my search were metal based or picture based (with the stamp option). What if a structured (crafty, natural looking) tree existed that could serve as a centerpiece or on a family table with names or even pictures attached to represent your loved ones? Would this be something that you think could gain popularity on the market?
Any ideas are helpful :).

Oh my gosh – I love that idea! You could hang small pictures (like, in 1-2” frames) of the people to be remembered from the branches, or set the pictures on the branches (like, leaning against the tree, so they would stand). Depending on how large the tree would be, there are these little glass frames that they sell at Michael’s and in scrapbook shops. Can’t remember the name – but it starts with an “R” – they are cute.
I really like your idea.
You’re right that Etsy has just about everything – and that you don’t want to “steal” someone’s idea. The key (if you make something that is already there) is to make it different and unique in your own way. There are a million ways to do a bird’s nest cake topper – since there are a million types of birds/colors/wedding themes/etc. Just because you make a cake topper with a bird, and someone else makes a cake topper with a bird, doesn’t necessarily mean you are stealing.
I have shops on Etsy, and Etsy is tricky sometimes. Granted, I don’t do a lot to promote them, but sometimes I will get 7 sales in a month, and then no sales for 2 months. There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason.
I don’t know how familiar with Etsy you are, but it’s cheap to list – $.20 per item. I would suggest listing your items, then relisting after a few days – so that your item is always featured on the first couple pages of its category. There are forums and pages on Etsy dedicated to helping sellers promote their products.
I say GO FOR IT! Sounds like you have nothing to do for 3 months – so make up a couple of the trees (or other items), and list them and see what happens. I bet that once you get started, you’ll start thinking of all sorts of items to make, and before you know it, you’ll have a full Etsy shop!:-)
