Etsy - Would you buy a ring you hadn't seen in real life?

Has anyone bought a ring from Etsy?

Would anyone NEVER buy a ring from Etsy - if so, why?

If you have an Etsy ring, were you worried it might not fit or look right on your hand, since you can't try it on?

    Any success/horror stories/pics to share?

Also, for those who love ring porn, I'm looking to maaaaaybe get something like this with a clear stone, not green (but SO isn't sure he likes it enough yet): http://www.etsy.com/listing/82708420/hydrangea-stacking-ring-sterling-silver

I know Mrs. Sand Dollar's first ring was from Etsy, but it ended up breaking. :( She wrote about her experience here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2011/05/09/a-ring-is-a-circle…/#more-197554. Based on what happened to her, I think one of the key questions to ask the seller is whether or not the ring will hold up over time from daily wear (if that's important to you).

I would purchase a ring from Etsy but I would probably never purchase it in silver (too soft). That ring is really pretty though!

I have ordered rings on etsy but only cheapies (less than $60) ..some good and some bad.. it has generally been a "I got what I paid for" type thing - but I still would buy a ring from etsy . I have never been disappointed by the look thus far :)

we got our bands from an etsy seller.  they sent us a sizing ring before we ordered, and they look great!  http://www.etsy.com/listing/66501954/titanium-wedding-band-set-custom  They are a bit thicker then we thought, but I wore mine for a couple of hours and it was comfortable.  Ours hads more coppery colours then silver, but still very unique and cool.

    I did!

I didn't have any problems, the seller was great with communication and it fits perfectly

The thing is, it's not cheap. I'm looking to have it in white gold not silver, with moissanite - that's $820! So I want to make sure I really am gonna "get what I pay for".

Have you ever tried on something similar to this setting?  Can you return it and make adjustments if need be?

@CanadianMermaid: Erm nope, I haven't tried anything similar. In fact, I haven't been into jeweller's shops to try on ANYTHING. But this isn't very typical so I haven't seen similar in shops. What could I try on that might give me the idea, maybe? Anyone have a suggestion? As for returns and adjustments, I haven't asked yet, but it's custom design so I doubt it.

@VickyAurea: I feel like if it IS custom that is when you should be able to return it for adjustments .. not a refund though. Hrmmm as for ideas.. maybe costume type jewelery that would have a similar shape or give you an idea of the metal work...etc . It is hard, it is is very unique!

I would read a lot of the seller's reviews, and clarify all policies before you purchase. I really wanted a vintage ring from etsy (and I think the SO is working with the seller now with a payment plan- hopefully!), but I would think if there are a lot of good reviews, I would trust them. I have heard of a lot of problems, even with large corporate jewelers, so I would as long as you can confirm policies, I would go for it!

i'm currently waiting for my first etsy ring and so far the process and pix have been promising.  that said, i have THREE other rings from an online seller that i don't think is on etsy that are all excellent craftsmanship.  both rings from my previous wedding set and the ering FI gave me are from that place, but they do have a brick-and-mortar storefront in grand island, NY, so i don't know if that makes a difference.

i have to say that ring you posted is quite lovely and unique.  it's got me thinking about another RHR, lol.  peridot is FI's birthstone.

I would definitely shy away from silver for daily wear, like the one post above references with another bee's etsy issues.

I think i'm sort of old fashioned when it comes to buying online, but especially with jewelry, i'd want to see it beforehand (or at least have the ability to return it with no cost)

@alianora: Holy cow, I LOVE those rings!

And to the OP, yes, I would definitely buy from Etsy even for a big purchase if I was in love with the piece. Maybe e-mail the seller and ask for more pictures in case that would help with your decision. I really love the delicate, feminine ring you were looking at.

If the Etsy seller had really positive feedback, absolutely. Looks like that seller has 838 feedback posts with 100% of them being positive.

I've bought seven rings from Etsy.  What?  I LOVE rings! :)  I have one that didn't look as nice as the picture and one that hasn't arrived yet, but the rest I am very happy to have.

For sizing - get yourself somewhere where you can get a sizing done to the nearest quarter size for that width of ring.  Since that's 1.9 mm for that one, a jeweler might have something the right size.  For the kind of money you are talking about spending, I would assume there was some kind of adjustments policy, but ask before you buy.

That particular seller has great feedback, as Aure already said, but also has had the same store since at least 2008.  They seem to have a number of gold pieces mixed in with the silver, so it seems like they have a good familiarity with working in gold.

Maybe buy the normal ring first to make sure you love it, then you can confirm for the white gold/moissy one?

@cardus: Patrick Irla has a shop in Birmingham (, MI??? I dunno a thing about States!). I just WISH I could take a road trip there and meet him and feel confident in the purchase - but it's more than a little far away from me.

@love108: As I said, we're going for white gold, not silver. :)

@Jinxstar: Thanks for the tips, they're really useful and I will bear them in mind. I'm a bit of a ring newbie, so do you mean go to a jeweller's and get sized and then try on a ring that is 1.9mm thick? Also, he does gold, yes, the price I quoted was for white gold and moissanite, as I already spoke to him about this.

@flownmuse:  Wow, that seems like a huge amount of money to waste on a test ring. I see your point, though, because it'd be a bigger amount to waste if I didn't like the real thing. I'm also not sure because if it's a test, it'd look like the real thing and I'd kinda like to keep the first time I wear it for being the time when SO finally asks me, you know?

@VickyAurea:Oops! I never looked at the price the first time. Definitely a bit high considering it would be over 12% of your final ring!

For what it's worth, I bought my ring online from MoissaniteCo, so had never tried it on either. I had about 10-15 tabs on the computer, but in the end I kept going back to this same one, so we got it :) I think if you feel that pull, then go for it! I love the sort of half-bezel too.

@flownmuse: Yeah, I am feeling really, very drawn to it. And I know it must be the one because suddenly that amount of money seems okay to spend (£530) when our previous budget was £200. I feel it's worth it because it was MADE for me. SO isn't sure yet, though, and he also isn't sure we need to be sure yet - as we need to save up a lot first (not just save up £530.... he wants to have a lot more than that before he'll spend that amount). I hope over the next few months he will love it as much as I do.

@VickyAurea: yeah, it's MI.  i've never been to the shop in NY either, as much as i'd like to visit it.  i was just thinking a physical shop might be more reputable than someone with complete anonymity, working out of their basement and never talking directly to customers.  and thanks for posting too...i'm in love with his hydrangea cluster necklace and some of the matching earrings, and totally rethinking my day-of jewelry, lol.

    Hey!

My engagement ring came from Etsy! It was a fantastic process for us; the seller kept us updated with everything, sending pictures and a sketch to confirm before it was created (custom ring). It was a really enjoyable experience. Plus, if there were any problems, she'd have the ring back to fix the problem. I'd certainly reccommend it (as long as you look at all the feedback and read the sellers policies first)!

This is the original ring that I loved but wanted to make a few changes (rose gold, bezel setting and a sapphire centre):

Yes, go to a jewelrer's and try on rings of that size. Your ring size can be bigger for wider rings and smaller for narrower rings.  What I meant about the gold remark is this: If he had 100 items in his shop and only two were gold, I'd wonder if he had a lot of experience with gold.  That isn't the case, so I think it's fine.

BTW, I'm amused that your jeweler is in Birmingham, Michigan.  We went to Birmingham, UK last month to buy our wedding rings.  (We were in England visiting my father, who is British.)

@Jinxstar: Yes, I wish it was in Brum (aka B'ham, UK) because then I could just hop on a train and be there in an hour or two. Sigh. Nothing is ever too far away here. Also, I just like a good excuse to go to Brum - everything is so cheap there and it's big and exciting, being the second-capital and all! How was your trip? :)

I believe murmur has a ring similar to the one you're interested in. It sticks out in my mind b/c I remember the lovely hydrangea blossom and thought it looked really pretty. It might be from the same seller?

I'm going to buy FI's ring from Etsy without seeing it.  Another Bee gave me a reccommendation for the store, here it is!  I figure it's not TOO expensive, so if it doesn't work out it won't be the end of the world.  But I have communicated with them and they seem very helpful, plus they have a lot of positive reviews.

My engagement ring came from etsy. Its an asscher cut aquamarine with some diamond accents set in white gold. I couldn't find what I wanted local, and I found it very easily on etsy. The seller had lots of positive feedback, and actually had a retail shop in Los Angeles. I was a little nervous, but I couldn't be happier with my ring!

Hi doll, I'm from Manchester uk, and I was sooo super close to buying a custom made one from etsy, the only drawback was the amount in customs tax I worked out I was liable for! You might want to speak to the seller to see if they will mark the ring down in value (€50) so that you don't end up paying an extra 300quid in tax.
Of course this is all dependent on if you already have your ring and what you decided.
Quite interested to hear the outcome, how I wish I had spoke to you 2 weeks ago lol

My fiance didn't buy my engagement ring on Etsy, but he did buy it online sight-unseen. I wanted a vintage ring, and the selection here is not great. We looked all over town, in the city, and even went to a once-monthly antique fair. Nothing compared to all the beautiful rings I found online. So he secretly bought one online, they sent him an appraisal but he had it appraised independetly during the return period (to make sure he was getting what he was paying for) and was 100% satisfied. In fact, after he proposed he kept telling me how much he loved working with the online shop. It's one that deals almost exclusively with antique jewelry. Anyway, according to him it was a great experience. Just be smart about who you shop with and make sure you know their return/exchange poicies.

My FI and I discussed getting married. when the time came he asked me to send him links to rings I liked in order of favourite to least favourite. I did and thats how I ended up with my ring. he got it of an ebay powerseller based in georgia

It is lovely and I love it....it looks even better in real life. i would recommend doing your research before buying online though....learn about diamonds...sizing etc.

@LaraW:  Your ring is beautiful. I love it! I don't think I've ever seen a sapphire that was so lightly colored, which I really like. Is there something different about it or is it just a variation in color?

When I was talking rings with OH he saw one style he really liked and the closest match I found was on etsy - http://www.etsy.com/listing/71167441/his-and-her-matching-mokume-and

So I am seriously considering it as I think this set is absolutely gorgeous.

    Yes, absolutely, and I have!

My original wedding ring (did not have an ering) and my husband's wedding band came from online. He adores his ring. I had to change mine due to allergies.

My second set was also custom online, from Brian Gavin. Allergies were an issue again (different type of allergy though!) but I was happy to live with it for the time being though there were some things I did not like - not due to the work or craftmanship which was excellent, but just the style. However, my husband was on board with me changing it due to the allergy issue as he did not want it to get worse or blow up on me later!

Third set is from an Etsy vendor, partial custom order, and are sitting somewhere in the Fed Ex line to be delivered to be tomorrow. I was able to see lots of examples of his work, and his feedback. I fully expect them to be gorgeous and my final forever ring set after all this! I am not worried about it "not looking right" as by this point I have had plenty of time to try different rings, different styles, look at many rings and figure out what I am drawn to and like on my finger.

I have also ordered a few simpler rings from Etsy, like tree bark bands and such, and love them all!

I would buy a ring from Etsy if it came from a seller that one of the bees or a friend IRL has had an experience with.  I'm less trusting of the reviews now because they seem like they are coming from the seller themselves (same style of writing/speaking, same word choice) or their friends.

I would never buy anything of much value like an engagement ring by etsy, for my mind to be at ease. But my fiance and I did get my ring without seeing it in person, but we got it from helzberg jewelers. I've gotten countless things from them with no problems so they were trusted. I'm happy we did get the ring we wanted, but I understand not everyone have happy endings with not seeing there ring before hand.
