I haven't been on a honeymoon in europe but i spent quite a bit of time there last summer. Don't stay in a hostel for your honeymoon, they're fine for budget vacays with your friends but would be weird with your husband. as for other romantic countries, I say Ireland. Its not an obvious choice but its so incredibly beautiful. Go to Gallway and see the Cliffs of Moher and the Irish countryside. Its incredible.
We are going to Greece - but I highly suggest Germany for you. If not Berlin, then the southern part is gorgeous (Munich - Stuttgart - Garmisch). Many military bases nearby so you could get discounts for attractions and hotels from the USO office. You can also do day trips to Austria or Switzerland.
I have been to copenhagen. It is a beautiful city very clean. I have also been to prague. Nice city, very laid back, these two places don't really have anything HUGE that is a "must see" may make your honeymoon feel less rushed and more relaxed. You know just enjoy time exploring and walking around and going to cafes and stuff. I have been to greece, and I think it is a very ancient and romantic place. I would maybe suggest santorini and some other small islands.
Greece, Spain, Scotland, Czech Republic- these are the top spots other than France and Italy I would recommend for a honeymoon...
I spent a semester in Spain and thought it was soooo romantic. I stayed in Sevilla [southern spain] and LOVED that city. Northern Spain is very different, more quiet, small town feel, but also very beautiful!
I think the reason we'd do Berlin and Prague is because Prague is near Berlin. Turkey does sound great, but since he'll have just come back from Afghanistan, I'm fairly certain he'll nix Turkey, and we don't want to go to beaches (nixing Greece).
That is a good idea about military lodging if we go other places in Germany, though. But Berlin has SO much to see that I think if we were there for 4-5 days, we wouldn't have time for much else in Germany. I've been to all three cities, but hubby hasn't been to Europe other than a trip to Russia when he was younger.
We're doing Copenhagen because I used to live there and I want to show him the city, which a very relaxed place to be....and also I want to see my friends :)
I wonder if adding Amsterdam might be a good choice. I've been there a lot, and it's a beautiful city in the early summer and not too terribly expensive. 4 cities in 2 weeks might be too much, though.
And yes, hostels aren't romantic, but many European hostels have private rooms/bathrooms, just no amenities. I'm always torn with hotels in Europe because you're never there but you still want a nice place.
When I went to Prague, my girlfriend and I stayed at a former prison - it was really cool!!
If there is one amazing place to go on your honeymoon in Europe is Ireland. Like the Republic of Ireland. Its absolutely beautiful there and perfect for a nice intimate honeymoon where you can have fun exploring together. Don't do the traditional Italy or Paris or anything, definitely do Ireland. :) You will never regret it!
Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, you can watch some concerts in the beautiful historic churches, more for sightseeing, but it is the most impressive city I have ever seen, the beauty of the city and the buildings are breathtaking
Venice is very romantic with all the canals, very honeymoony, I must have taken 500 photos, I know you said no Italy
Greece is beautiful especially when you go to one of the islands, very picturesque and more loverly and couples oriented, Mikonos is gorgeous
Barcelona is magnificent, very European and has a romantic culture about it
Amsterdam has beautiful canals, but the red light district at night doesnt make it as romantic at night, nice for sightseeing but not as honeymoony
Berlin has some nice buildings, but with the berlin wall and east Germany you can still feel the old history of the cold war, not too romantic, but nice to sightsee
SPAIN!! What a beautiful country. Historically and culturally. Lots of amazing history and great food and nightlife. Spaniards really know how to have fun and they have it all...cosmopolitcan cities, great beaches, etc.
My absolute two favorite cities are Madrid and Malaga.
We are going to Portugal and Spain. I hear the beaches in Algarve, Portugal are amazing! Can't wait!!
We LOVE the Greek Islands for a super romantic honeymoon escape! There is so much to do and you can island hop so you can see different places!
A road trip through German wine country and mideval towns could be really fun, or time at an Inn in the Scottish highlands, or beaches in Greece or Croatia, or being cozy in the Alps in Switzerland or Austria, or Portugal...
Sooo many places to go!
England is the best! Such cute little villages and cottages you could stay in. It's very romantic! We got engaged there.
The Greek Islands are also great for a honeymoon.
Ooh so many wonderful places to choose from! Personally, my favourite European spots (and I've travelled around Europe a lot!) are Croatia and Bosnia - gorgeous, gorgeous places with a fascinating history! Slovenia is also right there and whislt I haven't been there, Lake Bled looks nothing short of spectacular!
Berlin is also fascinating with an amazing history of the city, although not an overly romantic place to be. If you can swing down to the south of Germany, Munich is a great base from which you can get to Switzerland and Austria for day trips. You can also visit Dachau for a bit of sobering, yet important history; and on the flip side, the castles along the Rhine are amazing, as are the inland castles of Neuschwanstein and Ludwigstein, and the village of Oberammagau. You could easily spend all your time based out of Munich and have an amazing holiday!
Personally, I think Prague is totally overdone. I've been twice and wasn't overly impressed either time - I think it's been overrun with tourists and is pandering a bit too much to the tourist dollar and losing some of its charm. But that could just be me....
I spent 3 weeks in Europe and was lucky to see a lot. Austria, Switzerland, and Netherlands were my favorites if I don't include France and Italy. I also did a cruise down the Rhine and it was simply magical!
Berlin is AMAZING! It was by far our favorite place to visit on our honeymoon. We stayed at The Circus Hotel (it has a hostel as well). I'd have to check with my husband on the price, but it was pretty reasonable I think. It's super modern and cool, and we had a really nice room and private bathroom. The restaurant is great as well, but breakfast is not included. You can eat there (it's yummy!), but check out the bakery across the street for cheaper food. The hotel also offered discounted transportation tickets, so we were able to use unlimited public transportation (bus, tram, train) all day for 4,50 Euro on the weekends, and 9 Euro the rest of the time.
There is so much history in Berlin, especially if you're interested in WWII or the Cold War/Soviet Era. Plus, it's just really freaking cool. I recommend Sandeman's Free Europe tours if you're into that kind of thing. I think they have one in Prague as well. Our guide was Taylor, and he was awesome.
We considered Croatia for our honeymoon before deciding on Italy. Mrs. Hermit Crab went there and did great recaps on the places we wanted to go - it's a little off the beaten path but beautiful.
We did a very unconventional honeymoon.
Stayed at a couple hostels it wasn't a big deal. It was romantic because we were together! ;)

My advice would be to determine what you want to do - i.e. do you want a relaxing honeymoon, a sightseeing honeymoon, a party honeymoon?
We traveled through Europe for 6 weeks after graduation and went to 6 countries & 13 cities, so we had a good combo of all 3, but it was exhausting!
My suggestion is alwasy to hop over and visit a few Greek Islands, this was def one of the major highlights of our trip.
We are going to Ireland for our honeymoon and I'm so excited!
I lived in Ireland for a semester in college and it is the epitome of gorgeous and romantic. If you watch Aerlingus.com you can snag great deals as well.
We are also using Traveler's Joy as a registry for our trip, it's definitely a new concept for my family, but I'm much more of a travel-to-Ireland-with-my-hubby girl than a decorating/furnishing the house one. :D
lol pretty much anywhere. Every one has their fav countries.. mine would be spain and portugal. But i feel like anywhere you go, it will be amazing. FI and I , the last time we traveled together, went to spain, portugal and morocco. we stayed in different hotels (everywhere from 5 star hotels to hostels).. we ran with the bulls, we drove all over spain, we hung out with locals, we drank a lot of coffee and walked A LOT. If going to a lower income country, I would suggest going 5 star all the way! When Fi and I went to lisbon, we stayed at a hostel.. it was a historic building and there were no elevators and we were on the top floor lol but our room was fantastic.. all to ourselves.. our own bathroom and shower and kitchen (where breakfast was prepared if we requested sepperate from the rest of the hostel) the room was huge, the bed was comfy and the view was very romantic :)
I agree Prauge is jsut a beautiful romantjc city.
THe Greek islands are magical.
I would concentrate on a few places and avoid allot of travel days. They can rally wear you out.!
Please thank your DH for serving!
My friend honeymooned in Croatia; she loved it and her pics were gorgeous. It looks similar to what you think of when you think Greece. Beautiful blue water, cliffs, mediterranean type architecture. So nice!
@jindc: I honeymooned in that area. Started in Munich at Oktoberfest, over to Prague, then Berlin, a little town near Frankfurt to visit distant relatives, and then ended by staying in the Bavarian Alps directly in front of "Mad" King Ludwig's childhood castle, Hohenschwangau. It was incredible. The only thing we wished we'd done differently was spend more time in Berlin. It's such a cutting-edge & ever-evolving city that we didn't allot enough time to take it all in.
wow glad this sparked a discussion of sorts!
I'm fairly certain we'll do Copenhagen, Berlin and Prague. We'll have 2 weeks, max. I'm thinking 3 days in Copenhagen, 5 in Berlin and 3 in Prague. Prague is touristy but beautiful and from there we can do other day trips - I think we might try to go to auschwitz (so romantic, huh?) before it's too late. I'd LOVE to do Croatia but I think that'd have to be another trip...or a three week honeymoon which work will not be cool with, for sure!
We don't really like beaches and we aren't 'relaxers', so I think the three places we have are a good mix - Copenhagen is where I lived and I want to share it with my husband.
@jindc: haha we went to Dachau on our honeymoon, but we would've loved to go to Auschwitz (maybe "love" isn't the appropriate word). Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to go to Poland.
Anyway, I think your plans sound great, especially since you seem into history and aren't big relaxers. Seriously check out Sandeman's New Europe tour in Berlin (I haven't been to the other cities). Our guide Taylor was amazing, and the tours are a really good way to get yourself acquainted with a new city without being stuck on one of those tour bus things.

We are considering a vacation ("honeymoon") in 2012 when DH returns from Afghanistan to Europe - possibly Copenhagen, Berlin, and Prague.
Has anyone else done a European non-typical honeymoon? I usually think of France and Italy as a place people go, so places other than that? Did you stay at nicer hotels or hostels? Did you find traveling some place touristy (vs a resort) to be too tiring for a honeymoon?
