I am having a 6:30pm wedding, but can't afford a sit-down meal. Our venue doesn't allow outside food to be brought in so I am need some affordable ideas! I know it's dangerously close to dinner hour, but I am set on the time. Any ideas for an affordable option?

Do a cocktail reception with heavy hors d'oevres, and keep it short.  Whatever you do, make it clear on the invitations that it isn't dinner.

Or can you maybe afford a simple buffet?

Good luck!  :)  Honestly, the expectation is going to be dinner with a 6:30 ceremony.  :(

I had the same issue and ended up selecting a buffet. A heavy hors d'oevre reception was coming out 30% more expensive and I couln't not feel my guests dinner at that hour.  Could your venue do a spread of gourmet pizzas (like white pizza, chicken BBQ) and maybe pasta for less money?

I think that if you clearly state on your invitations that it is a hors d'oevre reception people will not mind.  I actually prefer all hors d'oevre.  Who wouldn't love to snack on all those yummy foods.  I have been to a couple of receptions that were this way and not only was I full at the end from all the snacking, but I got to mingle!

If your reception hall has a F&B minimum, see if you can do both tray passed as well as buffet style appetizers to meet with their minimum.
