When my love proposed to me with a 1 3/4 carat round cut diamond I thought... man this thing is huge!!! As I started noticing other women's diamonds in the city I realized I'm right in there with the average size. Everyone has large stones here! : /

o well I love mine anyway. Anyone have these same feelings?

    ..hope this doesn't offend anyone!

Yes, because it's true.  I've read posts on here about people saying that 0.3ct stones are garishly large, and they were all in the burbs or boonies somewhere.  Here it's not uncommon to see 3cts!

I'm glad there's a NYC board.  When people are complaining about catering prices at $30/head, I just can't relate.

Yup, I have 1.5 carats with almost another half on my band - I LOVE my ring, but its much smaller than most other people I know...most people I know have ROCKS!

And $225 a head hear - OUCH!  Gotta love NYC!

I agree! Mine is 1.43 and I love it. A woman I work with has one that must be 4 or 5 carats- its freaking huge!!! Thats NYC for you!

Mine is 1.71 and I'm definitely on the smaller side of average at work. I just sort of try not to stare, doesn't make me love mine any less though.

    Congratulations!

I'm from Boston and in a similiar boat. Mine is 2.2 and I'm not saying it's small but compared to everyone around me it's not one of the larger ones.

Yup! So I'm from NY, my parents are there and that's where the wedding will be but FI and I currently live in NH while I'm in grad school. Up here, my ring is definitely much larger than the norm. I even had someone tell me that it was "the largest diamond she had ever seen" with this shocked look in her eyes. But when I go home, it just blends right in. I think the NYC average is 2ct, so mine is even a little smaller than average in NY. It's really ridiculous to see the comparison!

Yeah, I'm sure it's in the circle of friends you have, but anything between 1.5ct to 2.5ct is, well, normal!  And I'm sure if you are in a circle of well-off people, the average size there is higher!  I can't imagine having a good-sized rock like you girls' and having people at work with even larger stones??

Mine is 3ct but for some reason, other people's stones look much larger.  maybe I just have big fingers.

Everything's just SO different in NYC (and I'm sure LA, SF, etc.) than the rest of the country!

Yup, another NYC bee here. I have a 1.53 (with another .25 in the band) and it's on the avg to smaller size for my office.

I was in a meeting with a girl who has almost the same setting as me, but had what must have been at least 2.5 - 3c round brilliant in it. I was trying so hard not to stare!

I love my ring, but wow you can get pretty jaded pretty fast by the size of the rings in  NYC.

Saw a girl at a comedy show about a month ago. She had to have 3-4 cts. And looked about my age. (23) But looked like she was from "out of town".

I honestly never noticed rings until I got engaged and yes, I do see some ladies with these huge rings and then the huge ear rings and then the bracelets etc. I would be so scared to wear those on the subway. I haven't gotten mine yet but it's probably going to be in the 1.35 to 1.5 range. And it's a sapphire which I heard is more compact and denser so it will look smaller. Oh well.

Don't even get me started on the per head. I moved my wedding to Houston because my family is there and I thought it would be cheaper. Yeah right! Houston is the 4th largest city in America with the prices to boot. It's still cheaper than NYC though.

@lauren810c: Yeah, but your pictures looked AWESOME!!!

@Mrs. Beans: I'm talking center stone weight.

@bRooklynRocks: Yup! That's part of the reason I'm having my wedding in Maine. NYC prices are just too steep for me!

Mine's a solitaire, no diamonds on the band except for some surprise ones.  I'd want a tiny-diamond wedding band though.

Before I was engaged, I STARED at some women's huuuuuge stones.  I still don't know what size they were.

    Wow, 23?? young!

Gahhhh, we're still in the process of looking for places in NY.  Future hubs is from Ohio so it would probably be WAY cheaper there but it would basically be a destination for everyone since most people are in NYC.  I'm originally from NYC so a lot of my family is here. So not too much of a choice.

Everything's SO expensive.  You ladies remember the "how much per head" poll on the regular boards?  There were people with $30!!  Here, even $200/head wouldn't be a lavish wedding - it would be standard!  Arghhhh

But best wishes to you too, that's awesome!

We're looking at 120-ish.  So basically we're in this awful gray region where we're too big for small venues and don't meet the minimum headcount for other venues  :(

Hi girls! I live in NYC, but I'm originally from DC, which is where I'm getting hitched. I had hoped that might make the wedding less expensive but that was me being delusional. : ) DC is just as pricey as NYC, unfortunately! I am so glad to hear others are also dealing with really crazy per head costs. I was beginning to get paranoid that I was getting majorly ripped off!

I wanted to help with a suggestion for those looking for venues in NYC: one of my brothers got married a couple of years ago at The Park on 10th Avenue, and it was beautiful, and a little less expensive than some of the more traditional spots. I had always thought it was just a bar/restaurant, but it really worked as an event space, especially with the nice garden/terrace area.  If you want more details and to see pics, send me a PM and I'll send you a link.

As for ring size, I have always thought that the diamond industry is a silly price-fixing monopoly, and I told my fiance that I'd be fine with a fake rock, and instead he did the exact opposite and got me a huge 4 carat sparkler! I love him to pieces but I felt like such a hypocrite! So we went back to the jeweler and had the setting "lowered" a bit, which makes the diamond appear less prominent, and more classy and subtle, and now I love it. But if I was anywhere but a city, I think I'd just wear the wedding band alone to avoid any funny looks...! : )

Hehe, the W in Union Sq would be so perfect since I grew up in the area, but alas, I'm not a fan of ballrooms  :(  I wish I was, it would make everything SO much easier (and better-priced!).  Have you seen Twenty Four Fifth?  So good and reasonably-priced but I can't get over the Old NY feel!

We're looking into a few places, all with in-house catering.  Not my ideal way to go, but renting a space separately made everything more expensive.  I think I've looked at EVERY event space in the city.  Literally.  If any of you bees are still looking, I can help out.

I love lofts and Ramscale looked cool but we're on the verge of being too big for it and it's too expensive for us  :(

My center stone is over 2 carats and it's about average where I work. Among my friends it's going to be very small one day, a lot of them aren't engaged yet and already dating I bankers, etc.

When I go home to the suburbs of PA people are shocked by how large my ring is. It's all a matter of perspective..

@LadyLeo:Ooo, I LOOOOVE the Park from pictures but heard some horror stories about management so I never contacted them.  If you have info you can send my way, I'd appreciate it!!!

And that's funny, I looked into spaces in the DC/VA area too!  My dad's side of the family lives there so I wouldn't have minded that area... but it was just as expensive!  WTF??  Where in DC are you getting married?  And wow, 4cts!  Can you post pictures?  I looooove looking at sparklies!

Here's the recap from the wedding planner. The one thing I would advise against is selecting a date in July or August, when it's too hot to enjoy the outdoor vibe. My brother's wedding was the end of June, and it was very warm -- after some serious dancing, I was sweatin' it to the oldies, Richard Simmons style.
    http://daughterofdesign.blogspot.com/2009/02/renee-and-amir-park-restaurant-new-york.html

I love DC but I think someone needs to give the city a reality check and point out that only NYC is allowed to charge NYC prices! We are getting married at the Willard, a historic hotel next to the White House. Fun!

I only have pre-setting adjustment pics, but it actually looks the same from the top -- it's just that it's no longer such a "high" setting when you look at it from the side (we dropped it down into a basket setting). Because it's lower now, it appears slightly smaller (since it's farther from your eyes). : )

I definitely know what you guys all mean...I used to work at Kidville (a childhood development center type place), and moms would come in all the time with these HUGE honkin' rocks on their fingers. DH also works in finance, and I think he was just as influenced by what he sees there--hence my larger diamond. Not that I'm complaining! :)

@nyc new bee: We looked at 24 5th and I loved it---we were actually there when David Tutera was filming an episode of My Fair Wedding. very cool! It ended up being too small for us, but I think it would be such a cool and unique place to have a wedding!

@nyc new bee: HA! I feel the same way... $30 per head for catering, would be a freaking godsend for us right about now. I always chuckle when I hear other bees complaining "$25 isn't that a bit much??!" Umm really???? I know cost of living varies by region, but come on.

As for rings, I don't even know if we are going diamonds or an alternative gemstone, but I really doubt if either will be over 1c (both from a cost perspective and personal preferance). Were I used to work, it can defintely make you feel very insecure to see the boulders some women walk around with. But I know everything in life isn't for everybody so I just adirme them on others.

It's funny, I work at an investment bank and was sure my barely over 1.0 (another .3-something in the side stones) was going to look so small, but some folks at the office have actually said it's large? Go figure...

@nyc new bee:  Ouch - they quoted you $265 for The W?  When I first went to them they quoted me $275, but it ended up coming down to $175, so theres def some room there.

Good luck looking!!  There is a service in nyc called Kool Events - they help you find venues and negotiate the price and its FREE - thats how I got my rate at The W - I think I still have the girls number there if you are interested!
