@UpstateCait:I can’t speak for the specific Dreams resort in Punta Cana but I recently stayed at a Dreams resort in Mexico and it was really beautiful. We had a great experience. My impression of the brand itself was great.

Do you think your travel agent found you a better deal than you could have found yourself? I normally scour the travel websites for deal but it always takes so long, so I’m considering an agent for our honeymoon!

@UpstateCait:  Cait…my husband and I JUST got back from the Excellence Riveria Maya and were blown away and so happy with our decision!!!  The Dreams was right next door and the Excellence seemed to be more “adult” and private.

Pros: total all inclusive, 24 hour room service, great beer and liquor choices, food was amazing, service was unbelievable, romantic, quiet, removed

Cons: hubby wished there was a sports bar!

We stayed for an entire week and we never left the resort and didn’t do any of the excursions.  Our main goal was to relax and chill.  Met some great other couples on their honeymoons, which made for fun also!

@AlyMiller: What a coincidence!! the Dreams I stayed at was in Riviera Maya – just a month ago!

I wanted to clarify that there indeed were a lot of children at the Dreams we went to (they charge such low rates for kids). It didn’t bother us too much as we were with family and we had some kids in our group as well…

I can’t speak for Excellence, but if it is adults only and that’s what you want – that’s the best bet!!

@UpstateCait:  it was!  and no matter what you decide—definitely go through a travel agent for such a BIG trip!  it was nice to know that we had someone to call in case something went wrong and we had free transfers to and from the airport!

Literally got back last night and want to go back!  Message me if you want to see any pics!

Excellence properties are adults-only (ages 18+).  Dreams are all-ages properties.  While the Dreams resorts are really nice, it’s nice to stay at an adults-only resort for your honeymoon, if possible.  If there are any family-oriented trips in the future, definitely check out Dreams.  If you end up going to the Excellence Punta Cana & can swing it, try to get into the Excellence Club rooms for some extra perks like concierge service, private lounge w/internet access & daily hors d’oeuvres, as well as upgraded mini-bar amenities in your room.  Good luck!

Excellence and Dreams are both nice, but if I were going to Punta Cana I would stay at Secrets.

I’ve heard great thing about Excellence. I think it would be a better place for a honeymoon as its adults only whereas Dreams is kids friendly.

I got engaged at Dreams Punta Cana!

Overall, the resort was a true beauty and the staff were so polite!  The food was so delicious and the snacks and drinks were plentiful.  We went during Christmas (2010) and the resort was at 80% capacity.

One thing I will note is that most of the excursions are 1 hour away.  And Dreams Punta Cana is isolated from the city and the locals.  We found that to be a problem because my fiancee and I like to step off the resort and visit the local shops.

But their are shuttles that will take you to the village where the shops are.

Please be sure to get the deluxe swim room.  It is well worth the additional money.  But DO NOT get the preferred club thing.  That is a total waste!  You only have access to one facility that is not open to the rest of the visitors.

I posted some photos of our trip below…. If you want to see more, send me a private message with your email address and I will sent them to you.

being a travel agent for AAA and also a bride-to-be, one thing you do not want to do is book a honeymoon with a travel agent.  I have heard horror stories over and over again from people who booked their honeymoon online, had a disastrous time, and have come to an agent to plan their first anniversary.  The online companies do not care about you or who you are or your situation.  Once you get on the plane, you are pretty much on your own.  A travel agent is with you from the beginning all the way until after you get home.  I have had several clients who have called me from the runway because their original flight was delayed and they would not make their connecting flight to reach their honeymoon destination.  While they were sitting on the runway, I was able to call and get their connecting flight changed without them having any worries.  To an online company, you are just a number.  To an agent, you are face to face with someone who actually cares about the reason you are traveling.

just my two cents 🙂

by the way, I’ve stayed at a Secrets Resort which is the sister brand (adults only) to the Dreams Resorts and they are amazing!!!  if I wouldn’t have won a trip to Tahiti for my honeymoon, I would be going back to Secrets either in Cap Cana, Dominican Republic or to the Secrets Wild Orchid in Jamaica. I have already done Cancun.  The service is outstanding and I book more of the Secrets/Dreams resorts than I do the Excellence and the reviews are all the same, they won’t go anywhere else.

Also, my cousin honeymooned at Dreams Punta Cana in April 2009 and they had an amazing time.
