Well I can’t help you with Punta Cana, but I have been to Excellence Riviera Cancun in Mexico and it is AMAZING!  We’ve actually been there 3 times.  Plus, I know people that have stayed at the other 2 Excellence resorts in Punta Cana and Playa Mujeres and those people both said they were amazing resorts.  I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the 3 Excellence resorts!   I have been to the DR in September/October and never had any trouble.  We’ve always had great weather and if it rains, it’s usually in the morning and totally over when we are done with breakfast.

I’ve been there before but not for my honeymoon. However, I know two couples who went there for their HM and enjoyed it.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty nice place. I would say the food wasn’t spectacular at times (they put gravy on everything- ugh!) and the bed was rock hard. But other than that, we had a great time. They have TONS of activities during the day and night. We would drink a lot during the day, go to dinner, watch the nightly show, and then usually pass out. lol. But they have a night club if you are into that and a casino as well.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

We were at the Excellence Playa Mujeres in October and it was fantastic! I’m sure they’re all pretty similar–we would definitely recommend it and can’t wait to go back. If you go, drink an iceberg (frozen margarita floated on top of Corona) for me! 🙂

If you are looking at St Lucia vs the Dominican Republic… you want to go to St Lucia as it is a much better Destination (2nd World Country vs 3rd World).

Also September is still part of the Atlantic Hurricane Season (June 30th to November 30th)… and most of the bigger Hurricanes happen August, September & October.

If you insist on taking your Caribbean Honeymoon then, you’ll “statistically” be safer in St Lucia which is part of the Southern Chain of the Lesser Antilles… than you will be in DR which is part of the Greater Antilles… Hurricanes track from East to West, and South to North generally.  The Caribbean Islands in the South (Windward Islands) are less likely to see Hurricanes than the Northern ones (Leeward Islands)

And there are virtually NO Hurricanes in the Islands that are just off of South America… The Netherland Antilles (aka the ABC Islands)… of Aruba – Bonaire – and Curacao.

If you are set on having a tropical Honeymoon, that is where I’d be heading during the months of August, September & October.

Hope this helps,

@thehappiestbridetobe:  My husband and I went to Excellence Punta Cana this past October and it was amazing!! We were there for 10 days right at the beginning of October. The resort is so nice and the weather was great. It would rain off and on but it never lasted more than about 10 minutes. It rained almost every night, but they have covered walkways to get to all the restaurants so you don’t even notice it is raining. I definitely recommend it! My husband and I would return!

@thehappiestbridetobe:  We just there less than a year ago….May 2013.    We left from our local airport, had a connection in Philadelphia, and stayed for almost a week….Sunday to Saturday.    I think we paid just slightly under $1500 per person (like somewhere around $1480 or something).   It is sooooo worth it.   The resort is so awesome that we are thinking about it for our honeymoon too!

I’ve been to Excellence Punta Cana and it was wonderful. The resort grounds, pool, and beach are so beautiful, and the rooms are amazing. They have a lot of restaurants and they’re all delicious. I highly, highly recommend it.

@thehappiestbridetobe:  I am so happy you posted this!  We are going in April for our honeymoon and I have been looking for some unbiased reviews!  I know you will need to make your decision before we go but I will try to remember to come back and pass on any tips that we learn about while we are there!  Good luck with everything!

@thehappiestbridetobe:

@Meggiemae14:  Well, I am back from Excellence…sadly.  We had a lovely time but I’ll try and be honest.

Excellence is older than Breathless or Dreams (others I passed…there are tons of other resorts) but, in my opinion, that means they have all the kinks worked out and we had no issues.

The pool is lovely and huge, the staff is very friendly and they all speak English. Drinks are yummy and I thought the food was decent. The service is great. Poolside or beachside, staff will come around every so often and take drink orders, and they will also come by with big trays of personal pizzas to hand out (which are DELICIOUS!). Of course you can also hit the bar yourself. The ocean is rough – red flags the whole time we were there so you can’t go out very far but it is beautiful.

Rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable. My biggest (petty) complaint is, for some reason, there is a window from the bed into the shower and the bathroom. I can see how it might be sexy for a shower…but being able to see your partner shit is not so romantic!!

We were very lazy and only did one excursion, the ziplining. The ziplining was really fun but it will take your whole day. We left about 11 and got back about 5. The pool closes at 6 so we didn’t get pool time that day. I didn’t like that the pool closed but I’m guessing it is a safety issue (the beach “closes” too). We didn’t try the “club” and aren’t big partiers so were usually back in the room and in bed early. I was also sick the first couple days – not sure if just from travelling, or the food, or what…

The Excellence Club is worth it! They have a lounge with appetizers out all day and drink service.

I’m torn on the swim up suite. It was nice, for sure, but, you can’t enter your room from the sliding door because there is not outside handle.

So you can go out that way…but then have to go back around. We were on the end, so not a huge inconvenience, but still seemed weird. A key-operated sliding door would make more sense!

The Punta Cana airport on the way out sucked. The service there was fine and all, but it’s hot and crowded.

So that’s all I can think of right now…anything else you want to know about I am happy to answer!!
