I stayed at the Double Tree in Puntarenas, Costa Rica before- it was really great! Its all inclusive at a really fair deal, you can get to different kinds of cool places, see wild monkeys, go zip lining, go on cool hikes, etc!
ETA: it wasn't my honeymoon, just a trip I took with my mom but we did meet honeymooners there!
Costa Rica? Hmmm.... Adding it to my research list. Thanks!
I'm a little late to this post, but I was searching "Costa Rica" - So, we got engaged in Belize in May and we'll be honeymooning in Costa Rica next May.
Late May/early June is the beginning of the "wet season" in Belize, but that really only means that it may rain once a day. It also means hotel prices are lower, which is good! Out of the six days we spent in Belize, we did two night interior in San Ignacio, and three nights on the beach in Placencia. Depending on whether you're looking for relaxation or adventure, Belize is a great option.
I'm really looking forward to Costa Rica for our HM, but I haven't done too much research yet. I'll keep you posted if you'd like, or feel free to PM me about Belize.
groom here - I am doing most of the honeymoon planning. We are thinking about costa rica for our honeymoon. looking at various resorts. our top three choices right now are costa rica (west/pacific coast side), st. lucia, and aruba. Looking into how buggy it is there in September though... some beautiful resorts in CR though!
WE are doing belize, if you are still looking! We rented a house on Ambergris Caye so we could have more privacy. It was really a great deal! Did you decide on anything? Also, I have been to costa rica, I would try to stay by Manuel Antonio if possible. It is beautiful there!
We went to Costa Rica and LOVED it! A fee blogger bees have honeymooned there, search their recaps! I stayed the Arenal Nayara because of their pics and was not disappointed.
@lauramich: Thanks for the info. I've been swept into the rest of the planning so honeymoon was put on the backburner.
We are actually doing 2 honeymoons. One right after the wedding with my daughter. Probably a Carribean cruise since they are so affordable. We are looking into the fall for our trip. Honduras has been ruled out due to political issues there. Belize is still the frontrunner but I need to check out Costa Rica more. Have heard all good things. If you had to choose one, which was your fave?
I didn't go for a honeymoon, but I have been to Panama and LOVED it. I've been dying to visit the San Blas islands: http://www.enjoypanama.com/san_blas.htm for years (I didn't get to visit the islands, but I loved all the other places I went on that trip). It's probably more affordable than Costa Rica and I think you would have a very rich experience.
Another overlooked place is Nicaragua. I've never been, but I know a few people who have and there is a lot to experience there as well. But, really, anywhere you go in Central America is bound to be wonderful.
Stay away from Venezuela. It's run down and poor and their '5' star is a two star anywhere else. You have say, a huge modern mall, then on your way back to the 'resort' you are surrounded by extreme poverty, open sewage, etc. Garbage litters everywhere the eye can see. We did have a good time and there were lots of good points, but I will never ever go back. If that give you an idea :)
Are you committed to a beach or would you be interested in something more adventurous? Before we got engaged, we took a great trip to Antigua, Guatemala, and to the Peten region of Guatemala where you can see Tikal, the biggest site of Mayan ruins, in the northeastern Guatemalan jungle. I have been wanting to go there for years. We stayed in a lakeview casita at a place La Lancha and it was really beautiful. The lake is unbelievably pristine. Our hotel in Antigua was great too. You have to be interested in trekking around and sightseeing, though.
I went to CR a long time ago and absolutely loved it. It is such a beautiful country and the ticos are absolutely wonderful there. Everyone is so accommodating and really just want to help you. One word of advice, I found the resorts there far from every thing that you can see and do there. It takes hours to travel anywhere (the roads are NOT good!) and you waste a lot of the day travelling. We ended up staying at hotels/hostels in different cities and travelled around that way. We got a good feel of the country and were able to see SOO much. There are a lot of good travel guides that you can buy also that will help you a lot.
Costa rica is awesome! Beautiful, romanitc, & adventurous. Here is the link to where we stayed. they specialize in customizing the package to include everything you want. All inclusive, reasonable pricing that is adjustable.

good luck!

We were thinking of doing a honeymoon that we probably would never do again. I feel like the Caribean is so accesible that we will end up there sometime. Has anyone honeymooned in Central America? I am looking at Belize and Honduras since they are still inside the Gulf. Resorts? Thoughts? Tips? Thanks Bees!
