futuremrss17 :  CF helps me stay relatively sane through all of this wedding planning. I have so much fun, and I workout with the best people. Its way better than your typical Planet Fitness gym. Hardest thing about CF is taking that first step. Then you’re addicted. Lol

I was a PF for a while when I lived in Wisconsin. I’m a runner but wanted somewhere cheap I could go occasionally when it was too cold to run outside. It’s SUPER cheap – like $10 a month or $20 for “premium.” Although it got busier during peak hours, it was never so crowded that I couldn’t find a machine to use. I didn’t know anyone there and didn’t socialize (which is what I wanted) – it was a nice place to show up, work out, and leave. It was always clean and kept up nicely. If you’re a self-motivated exerciser who doesn’t want to spend a ton of money, I’d defintitely recommend.

I used to use planet fitness. It was okay. Very limited compared to the fitness club I had used before. But I had expected that because of the cheap price. Like someone else said as long as being self motivated is your thing it’s great. I only switched because I liked the more family atmosphere of my current gym 🙂

PF is basic, like bare bones, but it’s clean. But like with anything you will get out what you put in so.

I do prefer other gyms that have classes and amenties like towels and group classes. But you need visit to make the informed decision.

I’m a Planet Fitness member. Mine has classes, the locker room is always clean and it’s rarely very crowded at 7am when I’m most likely there. Mine posts a schedule of their busy and slow times.

The gym where I used to be a member is much nicer, with a juice/snack bar, tennis, manicurists, child care, etc. but was 5 or 6x the price.

Because every franchise can differ I suggest visiting both at the time you would most likely work out, ask for a tour, see how crowded, clean, etc.

My FI and I go to PF 3 times a week as a “date” which makes it fun. We went with the black card membership because trust me, those hydromassages are worth the extra $10 a month, not to mention the guest privledges are really nice! My local planet fitness isn’t crazy overcrowded but there are peak times so we just avoid them. There are no classes but tons of cardio and decent weight machines. My FI is a little down about the free weights as he says they do not go up high enough but that is not a problem for me. There is one personal trainer who you can book a time with to make a personal work out plan with and it doesnt cost extra which is nice. Its not a fancy gym by any means but it is clean and gets the job done. Overall we love PF for our needs.

futuremrss17 :  To follow up I don’t think either gym will have crossfit related equipment.

I love our Planet Fitness!  My husband and I go 3-4 times a week and we love it.  We pay $20/mo each and it has just what we need.  They just re-did ours so everything is brand new.  And they have the massage chairs, hydromassage, and tanning beds that are all included with the $20 membership.

I was a member at PF. It was fine if you don’t need classes or a pool. They’re pretty crowded, generally. I found that the age and condition of the equipment depends on the location. I’m currently a member at another gym – Fitness Connection – even though there are PFs around here. FC has classes, which is a very big bonus for me.

futuremrss17 :  I used to use Planet Fitness when there was one around the corner from my office and it was fine for my needs and (at least at my location) it was very clean. I’d normally head in early to use a treadmill and some weights before work and then shower and head out. The only thing it didn’t have that I missed from more expensive gyms was a row machine. It was a bummer, but at the same time the cost was $10/month (reimbursed by my health insurance so essentially it was free) vs. $100+ a month for the next closest gym that had a rower.

I wish I had the $$$ to do crossfit, but for right now, that cost is prohibitive.  I go to PF and have the $20/mo black card since I travel and like the flexibility of going to different gyms.  Not all gyms are 24/7, but a lot are, so check that out before committing.  There are classes, but I haven’t attended any.  PF is a good gym if you’re self motivated and are good at planning your own workouts and keeping yourself on track.  Don’t expect a motivated or productive atmosphere – during peak hours, many treadmills will be occupied by people who just want to stroll and watch the news, and thats fine.

You won’t have to worry about peak hours if you work out early in the morning.  They also usually provide paperwork showing you when peak hours happen so you can avoid them.  This info is also searchable on google, so if this is your concern, its totally avoidable.

ETA:  I have not been to a PF in two years that had a real squat rack (sans smith machine) or a rowing machine.  The smith machine is counterintuitive for my body movement so I’ve had to modify my workouts around this, but it wasn’t enough to be a deal breaker for me since you get what you pay for.

futuremrss17 :  I have been to planet fitness and honestly hate it. I usually workout at home but went with a friend a couple of times. We had one ab session with an instructor and he basically kept talking about his protein he drinks and a body competition show he is doing. No hate to those who choose to do it because it takes an incredible amount of effort to do those shows and I have a huge amount of respect for them. However, he kept bragging and it was a big turn off.

I also am not a fan of how they have candy at the front desk. And I think they have a bagel Tuesday and pizza one day. To me, they don’t promote health at all, rather they just try to pull people in the door. The gym is also pretty basic. If I were ever to join a gym it would not be planet fitness.
