TiaMP:  I have a friend who got one about a year ago. Her arm was bruised for a couple of weeks afterwards from the insertion, but she says otherwise she loves it. No weight gain, mood swings, etc etc.

FWIW I have the Mirena and am pretty sure it’s the best invention of the 21st century. I haven’t had a period since the month after it was inserted, no weight gain or mood swings or anything like that. Once every 6-8 weeks my boobs hurt and I crave chocolate and every once in a while during those times I’ll wipe and see a bit of dry blood (TMI–that brown stuff right at the end of your period, it doesn’t even stain my panties) but that’s it. The insertion wasn’t the best day of my life but I took Advil and had manageable cramps for less than 24 hours, that’s it. I’m definitely getting another one when it’s time. My doctor said the local hormones in the Mirena tend to cause fewer side effects because instead of going through your whole system they’re staying right in your lady bits, but that’s not necessarily true for everyone. Either way, birth control you don’t have to remember or stop to think about is fantastic!

TiaMP:  I have the Mirena and love it!! It lasts long too. I’ve read a lot of reviews about weight gain with Nexplanon, but the only two people I know in real life with it have no gained weight.

I had the Nexplanon and loved it! I did have a lot of unpredictable spotting that was the only real downside. I had some breakouts but I’ve always had problem skin. I had no weight gain or any other real problems. I would get the implant again in a heartbeat.

I’m on my second implant.  It was wonderful for the first 4 years.  But now, 2 periods per month and tons of spotting.  🙁

I have had the nexplanon implant for 2 years- I love it! No weight gain and no mood swings. However, I have had really gnarly spotting and I have had my period every other month and it lasts for about 3 1/2 weeks

I had the implant, but had to get it taken out because I seemed to always have my period. It was like a regular period that lasted a few days about four times a month, but in between it was heavy spotting, if heavy spotting makes sense!

I think I lasted about eight months. But remember that everyone is different too, my sister in law never even got a period with it.

I had the Implanon twice and now I have the nexplanon (same thing they just made it visible under x-ray and changed the device that inserts it).   I love it.  I never had periods with the Implanon.  I just got the Nexplanon in July and I did have spotting in July and August, but I haven’t had a period since August.

It is really the only birth control I have been on that I don’t have side effects with.  It mayyyy have caused some acne, but it is hard to say because adult acne runs in my family and I got this around the same time most of them developed their acne.  That and I have PCOS and acne is common with that.  I never had any weight gain with it and my moods have stayed stable.

My friend just got the Explanon at the beginning of the month and says she’s been super hormonal/moodswingy and has bascally had a straight up period for 3 weeks. I have an IUD (Skyla, which is like Mirena lite lol) and spotted for around 2 months, and haven’t had a period since (with a day or two of spotting here and there)

TiaMP:  I have the Implanon and so does my best friend and mom! We all love it. I’m the worst at taking the pill so we had the same convo. went it so simple. she used a local numbing agent and they put it in like an IV literally took 5 mins! you can’t do heavy lifting for 3-4 days keep that in mind and I did get a killer bruise it was just raw for a few days. I have had mine in for almost 2 years and it’s been great! the second month I got a totally abnormal flow almost 3 weeks long but it worked itself out. I did get a tiny bit of cartilage build up at the incursion point but it’s so little it doesn’t bother me. Now I have little to no periods. No mood swings. it’s been awesome. I highly recommend it.

I had the Implanon and I LOVED it. My only side effect while it was in was having no periods. Unfortunately my body formed keloid scars around it, so taking it out was painful and gross (took 45 minutes and I could hear my flesh “crunching” the whole time), so because of that I opted not to get another one put in.
