I'm SO excited! Easter Monday we closed on our foreclosure and have been slowly updating and renovating everything. Today, begins the outside! There's a lot of banging, the dog is freakin, and I'm just too excited to work right now!
Why?
Because this is what you saw when you walked up to our home.
Please notice the paint splotches, the outdated-rusted-broken lights, and all out ugly entry.
Ignore the pumpkins, they used to have our names on them, lol
Now we come to the other issue. The wood trim. This is the largest issue. The trim was in BAD shape!

Another rusted, broken, ugly light - this is over the garage
Some of the siding is popping out
We are going to be replacing the back door - this one leaks badly
The ugly light and the spot where they attempted to paint and then stopped. I.e. Our ENTIRE house is being repainted as well!
It's hard to see, but the side was covered in so much green ick... The house looked like it hadn't been power washed in 5 years...
So, starting today, this is all changing! We're repainting the ENTIRE exterior, painting the front door, getting new shutters, gutters, and down spouts, replacing the rotted trim and wrapping all the wood, Putting in a whole new back door, and replacing the lights. I'm beyond excited for this! It's going to look so much better!
One of the greatest aspects... is once we complete this, we will have only put about 12k into the house (including a new HVAC) and it will be back to full market value which is about 60-80K more than we paid!!! LOVE instant equity in a bad market!
Bye, Bye blue house! We look forward to your transformation! I'll take pics tomorrow morning and keep updating until we're done :)
How fun!! I don't know that I have the patience to do a real house renovation... but I think it is so cool when other people do! What colors are you going to paint the house and trim?
I'm so jealous--you get to live in a beautiful old house! Are you changing the trim, then? What color?
The trim will be white to match the already done window and door trims etc... The shutters and door will be black, house will be a gray.
Love it. Please post photos of the 'after' as well! I can't wait to see.
Gosh that's a gorgeous house, I can only imagine how great it's going to look when you're done! We're about to embark on a HUGE reno ourselves (possibly a rebuild, we'll see), so I love seeing what other people are doing :)
I can't wait to see the progress! I can tell when you are done it's going to be suuuper cute!
Thank you! After Christmas (when we no longer have a need to place lights :) We're going to start ripping out the bushes and preparing for spring plantings. Those two giant hollys have GOT to go!
I agree, those two giant bushes are really hiding a great house. Can't wait to see the after pictures. Our house needs some exterior love but we just can't agree on what to do!
That house has so much potential with a little TLC! I can't wait to see your after pics!
OMG, our house is being assaulted from every angle! I just finally snuck outside to peak, and there is painting and wrapping and saws and something going on at every side of the house! It's looking so good!
I'm so tempted to take midway pics, but i don't want to be creepy or make the contractors think I'm finding something wrong, lol.
Beautiful house! Can't wait to see it after all of your TLC!
@caszos: Luckily we HAD to do this as the trim was so rotten and ugly... lol. Easy decision!
I'm excited!! I LOVE home improvements. I just re-did my kitchen (except for lighting) and I loved seeing the transformation. What an exciting time for you and your husband!
@KLP2010: Oh i cant wait to see the finished product., you house is so cute!! I love it!!
awesome!!! very nice house :)
We just replaced our shutters too and what a HUGE difference it makes. Cant wait to see the 'after' photos
Ooohhh, I like your house! Especially the bay windows in front. How exciting!! I can't wait to see the results of your work. :)
Your house is too adorable! And I love house renovations so I'm looking forward to seeing the after shots!
Wow! I am so envious of all your hardwork and diligence! I cannot wait to see more pictures! I remember all your previous threads when you were just closing on your house and your story was one I followed (hubby knows all about it as well). We bought a house around the same time and so far all progress has been put on hold due to the freezing weather!
This thread will provide much needed motivation for us! BTW, you have a gorgeous home!
@Vitsippa: Oh, I remember your cute house too! I can't wait to see what you end up doing with it! I'd LOVE to see updated pics!
Here are some midway pics I took real fast this morning. The pup and I are stuck in my office relying on my computer and a space heater for warmth. They're painting the front door so it's going to open most the day. It will be worth it though!
They got most the trim work done in the front, they still need to do around the garage. They got the back painted and the garage as well as a few feet of the front on the left of the images. It's hard to tell in the pics, but it's basically a darker better shade of gray, so while it's not a HUGE difference, making it all even, one color, getting rd of paint streaks and mismatched siding is HUGE! lol.
Look at the difference between the peeling blue and the crisp new trim!
It looks great! The darker exterior color with the white trim really brightens and modernizes your home.
looks amazing already! can't wait to see the finished product!!! great job! :)
It already looks so much better. You have a great house to work with...I love a classic colonial style home.
Can't wait to see the finished product!
90% There! Need the shutters (end of next week) and then replace the lights!
The back door makes such a difference! Especially now that the corner as seen in the middle is fixed!
Ahhhh, much better! Do you have plans for landscaping? The gardener in me has a compulsive desire to hack down those bushes in your photos...
@Minutiae: As soon as Christmas is over we're ripping those ugly, prickly, horrible bushes out! We probably won't plant anything until Spring, but we just want them GONE! Unfortunately, right now that's where our Christmas lights are since the house has been under attack :)
Thanks so much everyone, it's SO amazing. Our neighbors are stunned! We have made ourselves and lots of others VERY happy! lol
The front entry is officially done! Now we just need the shutters and the light over the garage done!

Thanks!
I forgot to put up our home with it's first (for us) flurry! We don't get much snow here so it's a big deal :) hahaha
This was taken before we got the new front lights up
What a transformation! The house looks so beautiful! Great job
