@ExcitedScaredBee:  I took the 12 weeks unpaid.  My company didn’t offer any kind of short term disability or pay for maternity leave, so I took that three months unpaid.  It didn’t cause any issues at all with benefits or anything else.  I wish it could have been longer, too!

One of my coworkers is taking 4 months off because she’s managed to save that much sick time.  I’ll probably only be able to manage 8 weeks…

I wouldnt take any longer than allowed by FMLA simply because an extra month or two isnt worth losing my job over if I planned on going back.  We will probably explore the option of my going part time though.  A lot of women in my department have been able to do that.  And the nice thing is that my part time schedule would just be the minimum I have to work, and if I wanted to work any more hours, I wouldn’t really need to ask for it or get approval and I’d get paid for it too.

My company is very flexible…6weeks paid but I think up to 6 months unpaid.  My current thought is to take the 6 weeks paid, 2 weeks vacation, and then 8 more weeks unpaid.  I think the bonding time is important but I also really like my job, so to me, right now, it seems like a good compromise.  We’ll see how I feel once the little one is here though!

Don’t empty out your PTO with maternity leave, if it comes to that. There are going to be drs appointments, child care issues, etc etc that you will need that PTO for. I plan on taking the full amount of leave that I can (which is more in CA than other states) without dipping into PTO

I’m taking 3 months off.  First 6 wks paid short term disability and the next 6 wks FMLA unpaid.  Financially we will be fine but I don’t want to lose too much money.  I think the bonding is very important plus I would like my baby to be at least 6 months before I take him to day care.  My husband are going to split our work shifts to make that possible.
