I’ve looked around and haven’t found much information regarding this, so I figured I would ask… Sorry if this is TMI!
I’m 26 years old. I have been taking thyroid meds for a hypothyroid condition for the past 6 years, and according to my bloodwork, it has been fairly stable since I started my medicine. I don’t know if that is related to the REAL reason I am writing this post, but I felt it was worth mentioning anyway. I have not been diagnosed, but PCOS does run in my family so this is a possible complication for me.
About 2 years ago, during one of the most stressful years of my life, I started experiencing really heavy, really long periods. Over the course of about 6 months, it got so bad that I was on my period more than I was off of it, and I was passing clots and going through an overnight pad every 2 hours (sorry for the TMI). I went to a gynecologist, and she put me on birth control pills. She said that if that took care of the problem, good, and if not, to come back because it was probably something really serious. She didn’t examine me or anything–just prescribed the pills. That DID take care of the problem, and my periods have been normal ever since. When I saw a different doctor a year later, I switched from a triphasal to a single phase pill, but that did not negatively affect my periods, and they have been completely normal for two years.
Flashforward to now… My husband and I were loosely planning to start TTC at the end of this summer (around our one-year anniversary), but we have since decided that we are ready now. I had already scheduled my yearly appointment with (yet another) new doctor for the end of this month. I took my last active pill on Saturday. Because I am a new patient, I wasn’t able to get an appointment before my current prescription ran out (even though I made the appt 3 months ago…not kidding), so we were planning originally to use condoms for the weeks until my appointment and then get back on the pill for awhile longer. Now that our timeline has moved up, we are not sure what we should do…
I have read varying opinions on how long you should wait until after getting off of the pill, but given my history and potential problems, I don’t think it would be a bad idea to start trying right away. I cringe at the thought of trying to conceive with only one or two non-period weeks per month. So… am I crazy for just going with it and letting nature take its course (or not) for the few weeks until my appointment, and then going with my doctor’s advice from that point forward? Is there anyone else who has or is currently dealing with this problem?
