They shouldn't be sweating their knees off in silk taffeta. Probably in polyester but silk is extreamly breathable. And for a black tie almost wedding, I would stay away from the cotton. Always better to be over dressed than underdressed I say.
I was trying to look at the Jcrew site just now. Wish dresses exactly are you looking at? Some of the short dresses seem appropriate, while others due seem a bit casual. My brothers wedding was a really formal evening wedding and we had pink short nicole miller dresses on. They were totally appropriate and not too casual. Also what color?
Fifty, my sister (MOH) wore a J. Crew dress in silk taffeta to my wedding. It was outdoors, mid-June in Miami. She didn't have any trouble at all. I haven't seen/felt the cotton cady material in person, so I'm not sure about how casual it may seem. They sure have beautiful styles in that material, though! Is there a store near you that you might be able to visit in order to make the call?
Oh and I do think the cotton cady is too casual for a black tie event. I see it more as a day time or beach wedding.
oh oh oh i love that cotton cady dresses! and the best thing is they can wear it again and again! i know i would
I actually just made a compilation of all of the dresses that I like. We might do black, but my favorite is light pewter.
I will probably go to J.Crew this weekend, but I'm not sure if they have the bridesmaids dresses in store. I know a lot of them are "online only."
Thanks for the advice, y'all. I'll scurry back with the compilation image. :p
Ok, here they are. Top row dresses are the cotton cady, and bottom row are taffeta. All in light pewter.

:)
I would definitely go with the silk taffeta if your wedding is basically black-tie. That fabric is actually pretty good for the heat, I don't think they will be too hot at all.
I'd go for the silk.
Also? you totally made me lol. FIRE THE MISSILES... but I am le tired.... hehehe
This is completely unrelated to the fabric..but what skin tones do your BMs have? That light pewter, if it's the same color on the screen as it is IRL, will TOTALLY wash out most white-girl skintones. It would make me look like the death! I love the color, don't get me wrong, I just don't want everyone looking like ghosties in your pictures!
The silk is definitely dressier, and I don't think they'd suffocate in it.
Also, the JCrew at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta has the dresses in stock if you definitely wanted to see them. They probably don't have the spring line quite yet, but they should have it relatively soon! I've requested swatches from their spring colors, and it should be here in Dec, so I would assume the same of their dresses.
Good luck!
I think in black they would look a little more fancy but not really suitable for "black tie." I'd go with the silk taffeta. I've tried on a Jcrew dress in the fabric before and it's not heavy at all.
Good luck!
I have one of their cotton cady dresses and it does look dressier than you'd think...but it's also pretty thick fabric, with a lining underneath! So it would actually be pretty warm (as much as short, sleeveless/strapless dresses can be warm :-p). I think the silk would actually be cooler though...I know their other types of silk are cooler than the cotton cady. The silk would definitely look dressier.
I would definitely go for the silk taffeta. The cotton cady is a great fabric, and maybe slightly more breathable; HOWEVER, I have a few of the jcrew dresses in cotton cady, and though I LOVE how they look, they wrinkle SOOOOO FAST. Maybe not the best trait for something you will be photographing all day and night.
Also, if you're going to the store to check them out, call first and see if they have any personal shoppers on staff. If you tell them what you're looking for they can often get their hands on dresses that were bought online and returned to the store so you can see them before they send them back.
Great choices by the way! i love the strapless pewter with the 'bow' tied in front!!!
@KMS- Yeah, I didn't take into account the wash-out factor. My MOH is way pushing for doing black dresses. So I need to go trot off and research those puppies.
I think the taffeta would be my best option fabric-wise though!
You guys are the best++
Have youlooked at the granite color that Jcrew has? I am using that for my BMs dresses its a nice alternative to black....just a thought (I adore the second to last dress you have picked out, with the diagonal bow thingy)
Their taffeta is super light weight. I have ordered them to check them out in person. Unfortunately the color wasn't right for me but the fabric was really nice. They should be fine in the taffeta dresses.
I love the black dress with bright shoes! I agree that color will most likely wash your girls out. I was originally thinking yellow and everyone hated it because they said it would wash them out. Definitly the black with a punch of color in the shoes =)
I would order a few "samples" in and see what they look like in real life. My BF did that with jcrew, and it turned out the dress she had in mind when she was on the website was completely different than the actual dress. You can return them to the regular jcrew store.
I LOVE the bright shoes/black dress combo!!!
@fifty: I don't know if it's just the way the dresses are coming across on screen but that second to last one with the bow appears to be darker than the others? I also think the that dress and the last one are the most formal looking of the bunch. Cute pics on all of them tho!
Ok, you guys are seriously full of win. :)
Those that did the J.Crew dresses- did you have any girls that were teetering around size 16? I'm just wondering how their bm dresses run.
@sanddollar- for some reason that looks darker, but they're all 'light pewter.'
I dont know about the bm dresses, but from my experience with Jcrew sizes run big. Does everyone else feel this way?
My sister went to the store in chicago and noted that the dresses were larger than expected.
Black dresses + bright shoes != too much. I think that it's really cute!
I think Black dresses and bright shoes are awesome! Keep in mind they could also get bright sashes, bright jewelry or bright bouquets, too--black is such a blank canvas!
Good luck fifty!

Hokay so.
I'm looking at bridesmaids dresses over at the lovely J. Crew. The dresses that I'm loving are in cotton cady and silk taffeta. The wedding is in June, in the deep hot south, and will be almost black-tie. (Almost in that we won't have it worded as such, but it's after 6pm, and the guys and family will be in tuxes but the ladies will be in short dresses as not to smother).
SO. This cotton cady. Is that a dressy enough fabric? Will it end up looking too much like a sundress? Or good? And silk taffeta. Will they be sweating their knees off?
Guide me, guide me!
