This little exhange just went down on my newsfeed on Facebook. God do I hate people sometimes.
Girl posts status: “ok,so let me get this straight. the government wants to stop medical insurance companies from covering birth control, but yet we are in debt up to our eye balls as a country due in large part to single mothers and teen moms on welfare……. no wonder our country is fucked up.“
Guy resonds: “A big part of this is also the large number of irresponsible girls (and in a larger sense, couples) getting pregnant when they have no business doing so. Condoms are like, 97% effective or something. As long as you aren’t an idiot, they should be enough. And If you want to raw dog it, then it’s up to you to accept the consequences of what you do. It shouldn’t be on the government. Medical insurance is for accidents and people with diseases, it isn’t a hand-out for a bunch of morons who got pregnant because they weren’t safe. Then again, it isn’t for the government to say. It should be up to the insurance company whether they want to cover birth control or not“
Girl: “and what about those of us who take it for a medical reason?! why should we have to suffer? its simple, we shouldnt….“
Guy: “What do you mean take it for a medical reason? As far as I know, there isn’t another reason for taking birth control other than to avoid being pregnant. If I’m wrong, feel free to say so though. I just think that when it comes down to it, it’s more about personal responsibility. It isn’t hard to NOT get pregnant. I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend ALL THE TIME when she wasn’t on birth control, and she STILL didn’t get pregnant. My point is that anyone that knows a little bit of human biology can avoid pregnancy. The pill helps, but I don’t know that anyone necessarily NEEDS it.“
I mean seriously? Seriously?? Ugh.

@MissBoPeep: THIS TIMES A MILLION. And I live in a very conservative state so these posts are amplified and more extreme. And they are reaaaaaalllly starting to get under my skin.
It’s gotten to the point now where when my alarm goes off to take my BCPs, I look at Fiance and say “oh, yeah, time to take my slut pills!”

Please tell me someone responded to him re: bcps for medical reasons?

All I can say is THANK GOD his girlfriend didn’t get pregnant. The last thing this world needs is for someone that stupid to reproduce.

Wow. That guy sounds like a winner

*sigh* I don’t even know what to say about this. How does someone support condoms but not BC? They’re both meant to do the same thing. I hate FB because it gives everyone the opportunity to voice his/her opinions…and I love it for that same exact reason.

@jillmatt: I did, I couldn’t bite my tongue.
“@guy, you’re wrong. There are other medical reasons for the birth control pill aside from preventing pregnancy. Aside from that, the government needs to stay the hell out of my uterus. A woman’s reproductive health should be between her and her doctor.“

@MissBoPeep: This makes me so mad!!! 🙁
I’ve been seeing a lot of “pro-life” blogs from my friends, and it’s like, “Girls. You’ve NEVER BEEN PREGNANT. Most of you are VIRGINS. Shut the f*** up until you’ve had an unwanted, unplanned, going-to-ruin-the-rest-of-my-life pregnancy.”
And if it wasn’t for Planned Parenthood, who showed me my options, my parents never would have adopted my daughter, and we wouldn’t have a happy little six year old running around making everyone’s life just a little better.

Haha..WOW! I am in medical school right now, just covering the endocrine/reproductive physiology, and there are sooooo many uses for oral contraceptives besides birth control, I was blown away! I have been on BC pills since the 8th grade, but I liked to call them my “period control” pills, because that’s what I was taking them for! Before them, I would have to skip school to stay home because my cramps/bleeding were so terrible! Let’s just see a guy have a period once, I am sure they would be absolutely mortified!

wow. just wow.
This coming from a guy. Because, yeah, he knows EVERYTHING about a woman’s reproductive system and BCP! Seems like an expert to me

Oh god I have to restrain myself SO MUCH when I see posts like these on fb. It’s shocking how people don’t realize that the pill helps with all kinds of medical issues totally unrelated to pregnancy. My favorite comeback is that if BCP isn’t going to be covered (because you know, we’re whores who should live with the consequences of dirty sex), then Viagra shouldn’t be covered either. That always manages to piss off a few hypocrites.

If men could have children or had gynecological issues, birth control would be available in vending machines.
Also, in my opinion, if you want to be anti-contraceptives, you need to be for a society that treats single mothers with respect, even deference, and addresses the pay gap between men and women.

I’m really dreading the posts coming up in the next few months with this being an election year. I hate any kind of political post on Facebook. I’m thinking I may do a “deactivate” for awhile until it dies down.

He wouldn’t be so cocky (excuse the pun) if he put himself in a woman’s shoes.

@rubyred605: I agree. I’ve seen a lot of these posts, what gets me most is that a lot are from guys who have no clue what it’s like to be a pregnant young girl… or from families who are well-off and women who are married and taken care of and never had to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. Makes me so mad!
As one of the many, many women I know who takes BCP for hormonal reasons (I’d be in bed every day without them, sooo lethargic) it’s really ridiculous of him to say anything on the matter.
I’d honestly reply with, “do you have a uterus? Didn’t think so!” 😛
