FACTA – why not recognize registered accounts?

@AB Bride:  sad, especially with regard to RDSPs. I get the motivation – to collect from bonafide Americans who aren’t paying their taxes when they work abroad, but this woman’s son is NOT am American except by technicality only and my biggest worry is that our gov’t truly doesn’t seem to give a damn. Flaherty says they’re looking into it but it’s your typical brush off speech. They are also giving the IRS a lot of access to the private banking information of Canadians with dual citizenship (and their family members without dual citizenship) which should go without saying as being very concerning for all of us.

…which wouldn’t be as burdensome if we were reciprocating by collecting on Roth IRAs and 401ks. 

At the very least, hands off RDSPs, period. 

Fun fact: the only other country that does this is…wait for it….Eritrea.
