I have zero scientific info on that ;) but I am guessing a lot of those people also had hangovers and/or did not eat that day...try to eat throughout the day, especially some protein/whole grains
don't lock your knees
if you start to feel faint, don't be embarassed, just say you need to sit down I have almost fainted before, but I made a scene and crouched down then only blacked out slightly instead of fainting (yes, I'm a wuss after getting blood drawn then going in a glass hospital elevator while I was sick)
In addition to everything cannotwait said: Drink plenty of water! Dehydration + nerves + high temperature (if your wedding is in the summer, or your dress is a heavy material, etc) are contributing factors to passing out.
I have no experience with this, but I agree with the other posts: drink plenty of water and make sure you eat something! My FMIL was telling me about a wedding she recently attended where a BM fainted; she was pregnant though, so I think that may have contributed! Also, a girl I used to work with had her groom faint during the ceremony! It was small (immediate family only), and they ended up finishing the ceremony while sitting in a swing together. Pretty non-traditional, but it worked for them!
I've never seen or heard of anyone fainting on their big day (knock on wood).
According to this site, if you are feeling faint, you should try to tighten your muscles (such as leg, butt, hand, etc); I guess the tightening raises a person's blood pressure to prevent a fainting spell.
Good luck :)
cannotwait.... i've heard about that thing about not locking your knees... but i don't exactly know what that means!?!?
It's funny, my husband and I were just talking about this yesterday. He told me that he nearly passed out during the ceremony which was on an island in a park and he could feel everything start to go black around him. He said that he started thinking about how he couldn't faint in front of everyone and knew he wouldn't live that down. He said the only thing that saved him was the fact that a guy across the water caught a catfish and my husband got distracted and focused on him. My hubby is a huge fisherman/hunter so leave it to him to almost pass out only to be saved by a catfish! I can only imagine what was going on through his mind, "I'm going to faint, i'm going to faint, no I can't faint get a grip, i'm going to.....ooohhhh catfish." I'd like to find that guy and thank him for that, lol. My poor hubby says he doesn't remember a single word that was said during the ceremony and that it was all a big blur. I didn't feel faint or anything but I got so nervous right before the ceremony and my hubby said that when i took his arm at the alter i was shaking so bad which in turn made him nervous. I don't remember shaking but man, was i nervous. So my advice is similar to others: get plenty of rest, drink water and eat before the ceremony, stand with knees slightly bent and try to focus on something specific if you begin to feel faint. Good luck.
I'm assuming most women are in heels with the wedding dress.. how do you not lock your knees? what if you start tightening your muscles and they start cramping up.
A friend of mine has a sister-in-law who fainted _three times_ at the altar! It was a very warm July day and the church wasn't airconditioned. Don't feel too bad for her, though.. she had bought a dress two sizes too small because she wanted to be the 'skinniest' bride among all her friends.
Moral: If you lace yourself up like Scarlett O'Hara, you get what you deserve. Buy a dress that fits properly!
Miss Texas, not "locking" your knees generally refers to hyperextending so that your knee is slightly "bent backwards" looking when you see it from the side. It's a very passive way to stand that means you aren't engaging your quad muscles when you stand.
Taking some good hot yoga classes can help you learn to keep your knees soft properly, and being in the heat (get the OK from your doctor first!) is great for you! Give it a try; if you can handle standing in heat for 30 min, you can definitely stand at the altar! :)
Hope that helps!
oh dear... i get heat exhaustion REALLY BAD! but it may not be too bad b/c we're getting married in November in a fully air conditioned church.
i was talking to FH about this today and he's nervous for me b/c he knows i freak out when i talk in front of people and the focus is on me. i'll definitely keep in mind the focusing on something trick that angee524 suggested.
but, thank you to you ALL for the advice and stuff! wish me luck come november 21!!!
haha :) I'm the fainting queen! I've fainted at the dentist's, down stairs, sitting at a table, more recently, almost at my hemotology specialists' office.... I am quite quirky. For whatever reason, talking about medical stuff really sets me off - I hate it but not much I can do about it. I do appreciate your link, springroll.
I'd just make sure that you are comfortable (don't cinch the dress too tight!) and if you feel dizzy, say you need a minute and sit for 20 seconds... it'd be embarressing but it's better than fainting! And remember to breathe!
Congratulations and good luck!!!!
Definiately EAT! Drink water & Juice!
Somewhat same topic story-
Recently I had to go with my FI to a doctors appointment where they looked in his stomach. I hadn't eaten that morning and I have such a weak stomach. The lady was going over how to care for him/ and showing me pictures on his insides. All the sudden I began feeling faint and seeing black dots. I didn't pass out but I was totally blacked out for 4-5mins. I lost all my color. I was so confused about how it happened. I'm not good with that stuff, I knew that, but I couldn't believe I couldn't pull myself back together when I felt it coming on. As soon as I said "excuse where's the restroom?" (while I was blind 75%) I realized I wasn't going to make it there! They sat me down and gave me juice & a cookie. I was so embarrased.
Anyway, all the doctors told *reminded* me how important breakfast was, especially with my weak stomach.
Fainting if you lock your knees or on your knees to long it is possible, keep your toes wiggling.
I happen to be doing a duel wedding w/ my sister and we both so happen to be fainters!! For some unknown reason. It just comes on.. certain situations like heat, standing long periods, being hungry, and not drinking enough water can definitally trigger it, but we've had it happen to us when we've eaten a full meal drank plenty of water and we're sitting down! The only thing that seems to help stop us from passing out is curling up into a ball low to the ground. How embaressing is that going to be when at the altar w/ 300 + people behind you!! We're having a late Nov. wedding luckily, so heat will not be a factor and at least we will have eachother standing next to us who understands! haha goodluck!
My FSIL fainted at the altar when she got married. She hadn't had much to eat and before she knew it she was on the ground. She told me to make sure I eat and drink that day so it doesn't happen to me!
You could stash a little water and a pretty paper fan near where you'll be standing so that you can signal to a specific person if you need it - and let your focus go to the groom - feeling like it's just the 2 of you up there might help. You'll be fine, just have fun!!
Miss Techie, I'm laughing at your story! Too funny!
My advice-- definitely eat before the ceremony. Have a big breakfast, which will definitely digest before the ceremony. and then make sure to eat a light lunch or snacks (depending on the time of your wedding). Snacks like apples would probably be good, because they are filling, yet shouldn't cause any bloating!
Nisen a dual wedding sounds SO fun! :)
This thread is making me nervous even though I've never fainted before!! No locked knees, wiggling my toes ... I might have to tell the officiant to remind us to do these things! :) I think my fiance is more likely to faint then I am! He's a nervous wreck!
I am so happy our ceremony will clock in around five minutes long.
I have a condition where I am prone to fainting. when ever you are standing in one place for any length of time shift your weight from leg to leg , it does not have to be noticeable , but I tend to "sway" in line , drives FH nuts! Fluids are important , but make sure not to loose all your electrolytes! Eating is VERY important. I know looking thin in your dress is a big thing , but we all know how important it is to keep up our energy! Hopefully I won't have an episode the day of , but we're keeping the ceremony short JIC.
this is one of my biggest fears on my wedding day! I get really light headed when i get hot and nervous too so hopefully it doesn't happen!
Well I do small Derm surgeries almost everyday and the numbing shot makes people faint especially if they haven't eaten. The best position is feet up, head down (blood to the brain) which is technically what your body is trying to accomplish by laying you out flat! If you do start to go down an Old school Hispanic remedy is an alcohol rub to the nose/cheeks but since you won't want to mess up your make up just use it to smell instead of Ammonia which burns the inside of your nose. Ask your doctor for a couple to hang on to.
Also I bet that there is an aromatherapy oil that will help, if you put a bit on a swab to inside your nose? I use Aveda's blue oil roller for Headaches and nausea.
My cousin fainted at his wedding. He went straight back - didn't buckle or anything. I'll try to get a video up, because looking back at it, it's pretty hilarious. He's a practical joker, so all the guests (and groomsmen!) thought he was playing a joke. When he didn't get up everyone realized he wasn't kidding. He said it was due to nerves, overheating, not eating that morning, and locking his knees. That happened a few years ago and since then every bride and groom in our family who's been married has chairs to sit in!

I was wondering... did anyone faint or almost faint at their ceremony while saying their vows? I've seen it happen on videos and stuff before and am so scared it will happen to me 'cause I get nervous and light-headed just thinking about standing up there and saying my vows.
Also, anyone know any tips on how to possibly prevent it from happening?
