Here is my dress:

It's diamond white, and not too bright. Looked great against my skin tone!
The dress I purchased was white, I literally tried on Alabaster (ivory) and diamond white, but they looked AWFUL against my skin tone. Honestly the satin material also looked really shiny and cheap in the ivory and diamond white colors. I'll show you what I mean. I'm super pale, but you can't really see it with this low light camera ;).
Here is the alabaster. Do you see what I mean by looking cheap/too shiny?

Here is the one I ordered. The EXACT same dress, but this is in white. I just love it in white, and hate it in alabaster. Isn't that bizarre?
I think it's the opposite, I am very very fair and blonde and I found that the whiter the dress the more washed out I was, I went with an ivory satin and it actually brought out some color in my skin.
I attached pics of my dress.
I solved the white/off-white dilemma by wearing bottle green. :)
ETA: Though to be fair, when I did go and try on a few "traditional" wedding dresses, I found that diamond white was best. Stark white was too much and the darker ivories almost blended in with my skin tone.
I went with "ivory" color from David's Bridal. It's an actual true ivory color as opposed to the brownish white people refer to as ivory. I think it made a big difference. I am EXTREMELY pail (blonde hair, blue eyes..go figure). Anywho, the first pic is me in the ivory and the second is white! :)
ivory is usually recommended for pale brides. have you tried on a true white? i think it would just wash you out.
Oh man, I'm as white as white gets. My dress is a 'winter white' and it has blush under it, so it picks up whatever color is in my skin:

@BrooklynBride10: Thanks! You look gorgeous in yours, and the detailing on the skirt is awesome. :)
@jayelcee85: Lol I think I'm the crazy one in the bunch. I prefer the white on you a lot more. Lol go figure.
@jayelcee85: I love the white dress on you, too--it warms up your skin tone nicely.
@allieisasweety: Lol. That was a HUGE decision the night I bought my dress. I had three of my maids with me and we were all split. I'm surprised my consultant didn't go nuts! Lol.
I do feel less washed out in Ivory though. Maybe it's a mental thing? ;)
Mine is David's Bridal Soft White. The color looked AMAZING on my skintone. I didn't look pale at all. I don't have any pics - FI uses my computer. lol.
My dress is ivory and I think it almost makes me look tan and I am REALLY not tan at all...I felt completely washed out, Twilight-esque in actual white
I thought ivory looked better on me than white did. My dress was a very warm ivory color:

@Fishies22: Im whiter then white..and i even tanned before the wedding, but to no avail. My dress is ivory.
My dress is a color called oyster - it is a neutral/silversih off-white silk satin. I thought that the cooler color looked better on my than a traditional ivory. Here is is:

Maybe it has to do with skin tones. Maybe white looks better on people with warm (yellow, olive) undertones, and ivory looks better on people with cool tones (pinkish). OR vise versa. So maybe that plays into it somehow.
I just looked to see if I could find an article and I found this one.

@Running Elley: Haha, Twilight! That's how I feel some days!
I am very pale, probably as pale as pale can be without being albino. I tried on man different colored dresses alabaster, ivory, etc. mainly a bunch of versions of white and off white. This is the dress I decided on, it's called Soft White. Not a pure white, but also not an ivory.
I'm pretty pale, especially since moving to snowy PA from FL! My dress is "latte"
I also thought that white would look best on me, but in truth, I hated it. I actually look much better in ivory to my surprise.
I am extremely pale and I picked ivory for my dress color.
I had an ivory dress because diamond white (and champagne surprisingly!) looked washed out on me.

The champagne runner up dress, though it looks ok in this photo was a wash out with my skin tone in person:

I wore ivory/latte (the sash). The veil was ivory, though the lace edge almost had a yellow tinge (which matched the sash, amazingly), because it's an antique that was passed down to me.

@mg4eg: So pretty, who's the designer?
Thank you for this topic discussion, I am struggling with the same problem!!
I chose IVORY! I hope it looks good with my skintone!

I, too, rocked the blonde hair, blue eyes, bordering-on-albino (I prefer alabaster) look on my wedding day. I didn't even attempt to tan because I figured that there was no point in trying to fool anyone. My dress is Alfred Angelo's "Ivory", though to be honest, it didn't really look all that ivory to me or anyone else. Especially not next to the "white" flowers that were a last minute Costco purchase when none of my flowers actually made it in from Ecuador. But that's a different post :).
I thought white washed me out, so I went with a dress that was listed as Ivory, but it actually looked almost like champagne, which I liked.
However, I just got a sample of the fabric the other day from the bridal shop, and it is much, much lighter looking than these pictures and the sample dress. So we'll see...

Hi all....looking for your thoughts on dress color. The pic posted below is actually gold...though it looks lighter! I am very fair skinned...and always thought that a true white would look best. Gold and ivory seem to wash me out. However, all white taffeta seems to look "cheaper" to me. Thoughts?! Fair skin ladies, lets see your dresses!
