Okay bees - question!
one of my BMS is always saying that I need to tan, otherwise my dress makes me look too white :-/ I'm very hesitant to tanning because i hate the thought of looking 70 when I'm only 40, and all the risks of melanoma and skin disease and all that.
soo this is a picture of my natural winter skin tone, and my dress. I don't think I look washed out, so I'd like some second opinions, and how many of you guys tanned and what you did.
thanks!!
I don't think you look too pale! You're fine. The fact that the dress is a lighter color should make you look darker. I am such a fan of airbrush tanning! If you do anything, I suggest that. Its not the same as a spray tan, where you go to a salon, go in the booth, the spray comes out and you have to rub it in. Airbrush is someone who sprays the tan on you, they're usually trained so you know its applied correctly. Sometimes they can customize the color you're looking for. Its not too expensive either, in most places. And, you won't have to worry about premature aging or skin damage :)
I don't think you look pale at all! I look the same. i used to fake bake, but got skin cancer, so now its all natural for me! :)
Oh good lord I'm like 4 shades whiter than you and I'm not doing anything! :) I think looking like yourself is a GOOD thing! No need to fake bake or spray or anything imo.
@rosie, oh my wow! haha that's exactly why I'm so scared of it :)
haha @corgi, well I do use the second or third lightest make up shade during the winter, so maybe it's just the coloring in the photo :)
jennifer_espos - that airbrush tanning sounds awesome! I will keep my eye out for that.
miss-spunkin - I think you look fine how you are. But if you decide to try a tanning method before the wedding, have a test run a few months before, just to make sure you like the results!
embrace the pale!! Whoever thinks only tan people look good in white is trippin. I am way paler than you and I am just going with it. Whatever your natural skin tone is, it will look great on your wedding day. No need to go all Pam Anderson on us.
I started tanning just like once a month now my wedding is in August. I will stop using the fake bake in May/june I just wanted an even tan so I wouldnt show tan lines...i dont want to be to dark either...
*EDIT* I wrote this making the assumption that you DID want to be tan. If you are naturally a person who is fair skinned, you may look odd being tan on your wedding day (same with no dying hair different colors, girls who lose a TON of weight, etc - looking different isn't always good)
I'm in a similar situation... I decided to give the "Versa Spa" (it's like the new version of a Mystic Tan) a try this past weekend. The first day, I looked like an Oompa Loompa... but on the third day, I actually looked REALLY good. Enough of the tan had worn off and I had a less orange, more golden color to me. I totally should have taken pictures!
So if I were you, I would say try out the gradual tan lotions, which also work awesome and don't streak (I just get tired of lathering up every day on schedule) and also try doing the Versa or a Mystic and playing around with how many days afterward you hit you perfect color (which is what I am opting for).
It's kind of like not getting a facial doen the day before/of the wedding - you want to do it ahead of time to let it set in and look natural.
I wanted to do a spray tan.. just very very light to even out skin tone, but I am terrified that it will rub off on my dress! Any tips?
@ktisthatbees, you know that's been my belief too. I've never been the girl obsessed with tanning, but it's kinda hard having to try to defend myself to all my friends when I say I won't go tanning with them. it's kinda weird I know. I got talked into it once, and that's it. And I agree- who ever said that dark skin is prettier than fair? 100 years ago it was definitely looked down upon to have tanned skin. crazy how things change!
@ella, that's a good point. I guess I wouldn't know. but if you did the last spray or airbrush at least a week before the wedding, it wouldn't rub, would it?
I think you look beautiful! There's nothing wrong with pale skin. It's way better than looking like an old leather handbag.
I am going au naturale for my wedding. I have a pretty medium skin tone, though. Even in the winter, I'm not pale.
Oh my gosh, it is awesome! I just mentioned it on someone elses post a couple days ago. I love it! And you totally don't look orange. Another thing that was cool... the girl that did it for me last, was about to make darker lines along my cleavage to exentuate it (well, lets face it, really she just made it look as though I actually had cleavage) AND, she made it look like I had killer abs... I soooo don't have killer abs!
my mom always told me my pale skin was beautiful because she's very against tanning. it took me a while to finally be ok with myself and my skin, but if you look at a lot of celebs now they have pale skin and look amazing in white, so why can't we?

@ella & @miss-spunkin - If you did it a week before, it would be gone. I would say to still have your body and face looking even, you would be best to do it only 3 days or so before MAX. Otherwise, the washing of your face twice daily and showering and everything will take the entire tan away within a week - and by day 5 my face wasn't tan anymore.
One other note about spray tanning and your clothes - the first day no matter what method you use or what they tell you - you WILL bleed on your clothing. Wear a black bra and panties that first 24 hours and dark colored clothes. I also don't advise doing it at night - if you sweat in your sleep at all, you will ruin your sheets.
The girls at my salon try to tell me EVERYTIME that it won't stain clothes or sheets - but my laundry says something very different!
I don't think you look washed out! Blush can go a long way too..
I think you look fine! I know a few of my bridesmaids fake-baked it up before my wedding, but to be fair, I stuck them in pink champagne. It's a tough color to pull off.
I lay out (natural sun)....guilty of it....I faked baked only when i needed to for an event. Or like now...i'm splotchy and look like i have a disease or something and I'm tempted but REALLY trying to make myself not go. Otherwise i use l'oreal tanner gel mixed in with lotion, applied every other day.
I've done spray tans before (i did them for my boudoir photos!) and they DO come off the first night a little on my sheets. But i really liked the results i got. There were a few weird body spots--my feet were strangely dark (you need more of that barrier lotion than you think you will!) and because i have big boobs, my boobs touched my ribcage and I ended up with half-moon circles where the tanning spray got wiped off. Which looked pretty funny once my girls were in a proper bra--then it was pretty obvious.
chrystalynn11: Thanks. A girl at the gym said basically the same thing, but that it was her first time, so she wasn't sure if that was standard. I do a lot of gym time too, and I'm worried that all that sweating will cause it to streak too!
@misscheeky, yeah I'm not a blush kind of girl, I have redder, more blemish prone skin, and especially on my cheeks. so I don't do blush otherwise it makes my face look broken-out.
haha @ejs4y8, that story is really funny!!
@esj - Sad, I had the same problem but it was my butt! LOL

This is me at the palest and tannest. I went tanning for about 3 months before my recital.
Ack- Forgot to add: I am super pale normally to the point of looking dead or goth (if the shoe fits....)
I was able to start really slow (3-5 min in a 15 min bed) and build my way up to 15 min over a month and a half. I loved the little stickers to let me know how much of a shade difference I was each time from where I started. It also helps you know when to stop.
This will be my second (and probably last) time doing booth tanning - it really does make me feel good and fills my Vitamin D deficiency, but I don't really feel like I need it other than to look human for pictures and for Mexico.
I'd say go for it for a shorter period to get a little healthy glow. Spray tans never worked for be because I always failed to exfoliate and moisturize properly, and my skin takes them to a weird yellow color.
You skin tone looks gorgeous with that dress! Don't listen to them! I was my usual pale self with my gown and it was perfect!

I think you look great - dark hair and light skin is very pretty, and your dress has texture and a color that doesn't make you look washed out. I think you would actually look unnatural if you tanned. You kind of remind me of Zooey Deschanel (I don't like her, but she is pretty!)
Also definitely would not advise any sort of spray or rub on tan - it will stain your gown and run and what not! And tanning beds are unhealthy and completely unnecessary, especially in your case!
I think you look lovely in your pic! I would say to do the customized airbrushed if you do desire a tanned look. I would say the only time one woule "need" to tan, airbrush, etc. is if you have really obvious tan lines. You don't want to look back at your pics and see halter top/swim suite lines on your chest! :) I know I attended a wedding last year at the end of May and all the girls went natural except one bridesmaid and she looked like she was a different race she was so dark! It looked so awkward!
@miss asb, you looked very beautiful, it seems we both have light skin and dark hair. I like the combination too and I've never been dissatisfied with my skin tone, I just don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal about it. I might lay out in the sun just once or twice before the wedding but I like my natural skin tone, and it looks healthier. '
@yes- haha um thank you? Yeah in that picture I had my bangs done like hers. I go back and forth between growing them out and cutting them. I think I'd side-swipe them for the wedding.
I am a tanaholic I wont lie! I go to tanning booths & do spray tan at least once a week each.
Since you are lighter skinned I would suggest if you want to get tan go in either a booth or get a good quailty air brushed tan!
I've always been a tanner and i'm 100% Greek (olive darker skin) any type of tan seems to come out good on me. A friend of mine is blonde & pale wanted to tan. She doesn't like tanning booths because of the radiation.
We tried different kinds of sunless tanners our results are:
Home Spray tan from wal mart etc $10- Me came out ok I used it once a week along with tanning booth. Her- used it a few times a week- She had streaks & it started to rub off in spots not on clothes but off her and she had spots.
Mystic tan- $15 Me again came out good. Her color was good ( she dressed too soon & had a stripe down her leg from jeans!) and her palms were covered!!! even with the blocker!
Showertan- I found this website showertan.com its an at home spray mist to set up in the shower cost like $300. BUT you can just buy spray bottles too $10. Me- Came out good color lasted much longer then the other at home. But I wore gloves when i put it on I didnt want orange palms! Her- color came out good. didnt wear gloved & had EXTREME palm color! This is her new tanning go to product!
I will continue to do booth tan because I like the way it makes me feel more energy etc but will also use shower tan
You look beautiful and you don't need to tan! But to be honest I voted for suntanning, only because my wedding is in the Summer. I am one of those people that slather on the SPF and then lay out by the pool (with a hat), so it's not the worst thing I can do, but it's not great either. I always end up with a little color, which I definitely need. I wish I could look good without any color on my skin, but I have olive skin, so I end up looking sick. So in the winter, I use a moisturizer with sunscreen and a bit of bronzer but I avoid baking my skin for the same reasons--fear of wrinkles and melanoma!
I surf all summer, so I'll probably also do some booth to keep myself even... in the end, if I need it I'll fill in :-)
I'm way paler than you and don't plan on tanning for my wedding day. I especially won't do a fake tan - I don't want to look orange. I'll admit I've thought of going to a tanning salon just to get a hint of a base tan but it's not because I want to look good in my wedding dress. I'm leaving on my honeymoon to Hawaii two days after the wedding and if I have a light base tan I won't burn to a crisp.
I don't think you need to tan, but I would be very careful about accidentally getting tan lines just from being outside if you aren't going to intentionally tan. That's really the only reason I'm going tanning at all- I don't want to get really dark or anything, but I do want to make sure my skin tone is even.
Yet another pale girl chiming in here... :) I am VERY pale year-round. For my honeymoon in Mexico, I didn't want to be super-duper-pale and prone to burning, so I used Jergen's Natural Glow (the smell got to me, but I liked the results). I didn't get much tanner with it, but I wasn't as pale. I had an ivory dress that was very soft white ivory, and it looked great. I personally think you look fabulous as-is, but if you do feel the need to get tan, please do it safely (the spray-on stuff or self-tanning lotions).
As long as your color is even then I wouldn't tan. My lovely halter bathingsuit gave me some tan lines that wouldn't work with my strapless wedding dress. I tanned for a month- usually about 3 times per week. Overall I am glad that I did, but I'm not sure that I would have had it not been to even out my chest.
I think pale is awesome. I use the lightest shade of Mac make up and its still just a tad darker than my skin. I use SPF 100/90 and use camisols when I go out. I am not knocking the tan chicks, but I just love being pale. I think its so pretty...
My wedding dress was ivory/pearl and I was super pale for my wedding and everyone told me not tan. (Not that I was going to..) But I think pale skin and white can go very well together.
I used some self tanner for my wedding, though it was in October so I had a chance over the summer to do some boating, but still I needed to hide my tan lines, etc, and my face never tans so I used some on my face. I highly recommend St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse! I'm 40 too and would never fake bake in my life! I also wear 30 spf every day.
I often use self tanner lotion. I just apply it to my shoulders, upper arms, and the back of my calves to give me a little bit of color.
I haaaaate tanning because I like my pale self and I really do not like the idea of skin cancer. Also, I grew up with way too many girls who go, let's just say, really overboard on the tanning beds. Scarred me for life.
