Fall in public?

Ever fell in a public place? I fell today while I was walking in to a store (there was a wet spot with no sign). I landed on my butt and my elbow, I was also carrying my 15 month old son. We are both fine, but my pride is wounded! I made sure to file an incident report with the store, but I felt silly doing it. They also called tonight to make sure I was ok! So embarrassing.

Any other embarrassing falling in public stories?

I'm glad you're OK, especially with a baby in your arms!  But I'm not gonna lie, I always giggle when I see someone fall in public once I know they're OK.

It's not my story, but it's worth sharing.  While traveling in Spain and staying out a little too late the night before, my friend came down the main stairs in our hostel.  By the time we managed to get out of bed it was passed noon and the room the stairway led to was VERY crowded.  She slipped at the bottom of the stairs and fell . . . into a rack of 20 bikes knocking every, single, one of them over in a noisy clatter!

And now, as karma for posting, this I'm sure I'm going to tumble down the aisle in my wedding or something!

Eeeeek! I think we've all fallen before once or twice... I always wonder if they put falls like that on a little blooper reel for the holiday parties... I hope they don't!!!!

Glad to hear you are ok, and I'm glad that they called to check on you!

So glad you're ok.  Oh I've had many the public falls.  I don't know how many times I've slipped on the sidewalk during the winter.  There was also the great fall in Cuba where I'm very convinced I chipped a bone.

Here's what I do when I fall: get up quickly, look around in a very casual manner, ignore the eyes looking at me, and walk away with my head down.

I don't know if there are any other UT Austin brides on here, but there is a section of campus leading up to the main tower that has these pink granite steps. They are about a foot and a half wide each and made of smooth pink granite. When they get even the TINIEST bit wet, people just fall and bust their A**! It's almost comical, because everyone I know has fallen on them at least once. Seriously on a rainy day you can sit in your classroom and just watch dozens of people wipe out on the steps!

Oh my gosh, falls ARE funny once you know everyone is ok (and I'm so glad you are ok).  One year on New Years at Whistler, I had a friend trying to play it cool in front of a bunch of girls, and he slipped down a flight of wooden stairs.  Oh how the mighty fall! ;)

Of course I didn't even snicker until I knew he was fine (But you should have seen it.  It was major fail!)

Well I didn't fall today, but while walking to class my shoes were super slick. It had been raining and I was wearing leather flip flops so as soon as they got wet they were like ice or something. Anyways, as I was walking up a hill my shoe just flies off my foot and I had to walk back down the hill to get it haha Embarassed. It was kind of embarassing, but not super bad I just laughed it off.

omg, my worst worst worst fear is falling while holding a baby!  glad to hear you are both ok!!!!

ive had some great falls... usually super high heeled related or just not paying attention. once i was walking down stairs and didnt realize there was still one more step to go and bang, there i was spread out like a working gal looking for a pole to swing from. my friend that was with me broke out laughing and when a paserby started laughing also she went all serious and told him "dont you laugh at my friend - she could be hurt you know" and scared him off... in the meantime i was 'hello, im still down here and you were laughing at me too btw!'

glad to hear you are ok

    I'm glad you weren't hurt.

I'm quite the klutz and have been known to fall from time to time.  The worst public fall I had was in college.  I was rushing, leaving the dorm to make it to my 8:30 class for a test.  It was icy and snowy outside and I was wearing slippers and PJ pants.  I slipped on some ice and fell down a huge hill, skinning my knee and ripping my pants!  Oh yeah, and there were about 40 people standing around me.  People actually clapped when I got up and continued walking.  It was...embarassing to say the least!

Ooh, glad to hear you and your baby are okay!  I can understand how it was mega embarrassing though.  I am really clumsy and trip over my own feet at least once a day (walking to work) and have fallen down stairs multiple times Frown.  Every time I do so, I always think about whether it's worse to have all these people see you (which I hate) OR to have no one there and have to pick yourself up and keep going!

i think falls are truly the most hysterical things ever (as long as ppl aren't hurt... and i'm glad you and your son are fine). I was watching big brother last night and almost crying laughing so hard at them falling in the HOH challenge

I'm a clutz.  I have fall en in public so many times!!!  I once fell down the stairs at the Barney's warehouse sale which was very crowded!  I literally bounced down each stair individually on my booty (I'm pretty well padded back there) while all of these extremely well dressed people just stared at me as if if was the most unchic thing ever - but I did get a beautiful dress that day!

Haha I just thought about when I was in Alaska visiting my fiance at Ft. Richardson. Before then I had never even seen snow before much less been in it and the whole place was covered in ice so needless to say I busted my ass a couple times haha! One time I remember my fiance was opening the drivers door and I was opening the passenger and he said I just disappeared Tongue out. In reality I fell on my ass and almost slid under the truck lol.

But on the brightside one night he was giving me hell saying "Oohh watch out don't fall" and he busted it! I told him about payback lol.

Um, all the freaking time. :p I swear I'm one of the most accident-prone people on the planet. I always seem to fall going up stairs, or have those falls where you go splat, and are so stunned and fail at getting up. :p

I ALWAYS "nervous laugh" when people fall... I am even doing it right now reading all these stories. I know it seems insensitive but I really can't help it... it just comes out of my mouth. But I am biggest klutz in the world, my most memorable fall in involved streaking the quad at my former college (at night) and slipping on wet grass... I gracefully took a bow for the all the onlookers and bee-lined it for cover!

Thanks guys! Laughing at your stories is helping me laugh at myself today :)

At least I had clothes on! haha

(For those curious how the little one didn't get hurt, I was holding my son on my hip and my elbow that was sitting under his butt is what cushioned his fall! I find that as a mom, your body usually tries to protect the baby.. it's weird. I fell a couple times with my older son when he was little and he never got hurt. I always managed to turn myself or lift him up in the air as I fall so he didn't hit the ground, all without thinking.)

I tend to be clumsy sometimes and have a history of tripping and falling a lot, so you're not alone re: falling in public places :-P  The one fall I remember the most happened to me freshman year in college. I was in my apartment having lunch with a roommate when I suddenly realized that the conversation during lunch had gone on for too long and there were only 10 minutes left until my next class. The place where I lived was at least a 15-20 minute walk away from campus, so I grabbed my backpack and ran out the door. On my way to class I had to walk by a street that was lined with palm trees. Well, being my clumsy self I tripped over my own feet and lost balance, and a palm tree broke my fall. I literally ended up hugging the tree. Turns out palm tree bark is quite rough on human skin, go figure, and I got a huge bloody scrape on my chest (I was wearing a V-neck shirt). Some random girl helped me up and asked if I was ok, but most of the people who were around to see me fall just stared and laughed. To top it off, when I finally arrived for class, there was a note written on the blackboard where the professor apologized because he wouldn't be able to meet with the class that day, so my running and eventual tree-hugging chest-scraping fall was all in vain. Oh well... I also had a bunch of falls during my first real winter, in grad school. Growing up in the tropics, I had no idea that ice was slippery. Luckily during those falls I was always wearing three or four layers of clothing, so I never got hurt or scraped, lol.

My best doosie was after a long flight from NC without AC on the plane.  Let me set the tone for you.  I travel a lot for work and I wanted bright colored luggage so I would quit confusing mine with other.  So my mom bought me bright pink luggage.

On the plane ride we didn't have AC and they ran out of Cokes.  So my tummy was acting up from the bumps and no AC.  I ran to the bathroom and was sick.  Never have I gotten sick on the plane.

So here I am the girl with the pink bag and the pucker.  I'm walking out and trip and fall.  My computer bag busts open and all the contents spill everywhere.  I scrap up my knees.

I just wanted to hide my head in the sand!

Yeah...One time I was singing with my band and I was sort of half on stage getting my crap together, and the opening guy was singing. I tripped UP the three stairs, flew about a foot and landed right in front of him while he was singing and playing the guitar. It was hysterical. I couldn't stop laughing and I think I was half crying. The guys were dying.

My worse fall was during freshman year and I was walking toward class and you have to cut across this grass section to the sidewalk to avoid walking in a big square to get to the building my class was in. I stepped off the grass section from the about a foot brick section, stepped on a rock with my flip flop and landed face first into concrete with a like twenty pound bookbag on my back. People just stared at me and I was soo embarassed so I popped up and "walked" *cough limped cough* away to the library cuz I needed a bandaid because my foot was bleeding from the concrete. They clapped and I kind of just halved waved at anyone as I limped off.

Unfortunately, I did hurt my ankle really bad and need a boot to help it heal! :( I had a huge bruise on the bottom of my foot and on my bone (that showed up on the xray) from that damn rock. But, I walked away from that incident with some pride. I wasn't able to make a scene...though it was hard not to cry :'( But good thing, I need clutches so the campus security carted me to each class because it was too hard to "walk" across campus to my classes! And teachers were really nice to me! :D

Oof. I fell at Target--because someone walked around the store with a leaking bottle of BLEACH! I had a ruined pair of pants :(

In the end, I was ok though. But smelling like bleach at Target = not cool! They offered to pay for the pants, but I couldn't ever find another like them and the process was going to take tooooo much time. So I just let it go...

I fall ALL the time - I have a wonky leg. Makes me swagger like a drunk and lose my balance. :)

I fell all the way down my stairs (at my house) a few weeks back... like, head over heels tumble tumble fall... oof! I bruised up everything, sprained my wrist and felt like  a complete idiot! At least I did that one in private - my leg will give out in public and that suuuuuuucks. I can usually stop myself from falling, as long as I'm not wearing heels. But with a baby in my arms? E-gads, that's a nightmare! I'm glad you're both okay.

thank goodness you were okay! I swear I'm a walking hazard to myself. For some cosmic reason, every time it rains, I choose to wear flip flops and while I've never wiped out fully, there are been some VERY close "balance check" situations

@Flammingred-I fall up the srairs, too. It takes very talented people like us to do that!

I'm so accident prone it's like the inanimate objects jump out of no where and knock me down. Stairs. Walls. The Espresso Bar at work. You name it. IT's probably knocked me down. lol.

In my hometown the main street has a huge hill. All the high school kids have to walk down that hill to get to any kind of store. One winter  my fellow cheerleaders and I decided to go get a burger before the game and I just biffed it all the way down that damn hill. I don't even wanna talk about trying to get back up in when it's covered in ice!!!

I have a reputation for clumsiness.  From falling to spilling, I am an expert at making a scene.  The best one was when I was on a date with a guy several years ago.  I was talking with my hands, as I am wont to do, and knocked the knife off the table, I go to grab it and succeed in knocking my water glass into the candle and spraying hot wax ALL OVER my date.  Oh, and the very loud crash of stuff falling onto the floor was pretty impressive too.  Yeah.  Kind of embarrassing.  But at least I get good stories to tell!

Gosh...where do I even start?! One time I fell off the ski lift in Brighton (UT) before the lift got to the top....yes I was that girl they had to stop the lift for....I crawled off into the woods and cried.
Another favorite had to be the first time I went to the Riverwalk in San Antonio...you know how they have the steps from the street down to the RW, well yeah...I fell down them (hadn't even had a drink yet) and landed right in front of a cop...um..Hi....Embarassed

Once I was at a movie with my mom, and in the middle of it, I had to get up to go to the bathroom.  When I came back, it was a really quiet part, so I was trying to quietly run up the stairs..  Instead, I tripped and fell and made the loudest noise ever. When I got back to my seat, my mom was nearly peeing her pants of laughter, hahah.

    This is a great thread.

I guess what sticks out most for me is falling in college, carryig a tray of food back to the dorm.  I was with a friend who still brings it up.  I guess it was somewhat miraculous, because I ended up on my knees (kinda in a ball), but hadn't dumped any of the food...  I guess hungry people have that same protecting instinct that moms do.

Now I'm getting all paranoid about tripping down the aisle.Surprised

I had on a cute skirt and a nice shirt. I even wore some cute wedge sandals. I was at a NICE mall and I felt like throwing on something cute b/c I knew I'd be in some of the boutique-y stores (hey, better customer service if you're not in sweats!). So i'm walking in Dillards, i'm on the phone, blah blah blah. The front of my sandal slips and I FACE PLANT and my phone goes flying and I"m literally all sprawled out. Of course, I feel stupid being 6' tall wearing 3" heels, right?

Nobody saw me. I qiuetly stood up, grabbed my phone, and cursed at my now-bruised knees. Then my sandal slipped AGAIN later that day and I almost twisted my ankle. Soooo i'ts time to retire those sandals.

I am so clumsy!  I knock things over more than I fall, but I have had a few good ones.  While walking to my car from work (with an armload of holiday decorations) I misjudged a step/curb and did one of those fall on your knees as hard as you can things.  I managed to save the glass cookie jar in the box i was holding, but my knees and my slacks were H-I-S-T-O-R-Y.  So bad - and you get up all embarrassed - I'm ok, I'm ok and it hurts like NO OTHER!

A friend and I were walking around campus after a big exam, we were both a little loopy from all the studying and goofing off trying to trip each other.  We were finally walking back to his car to go home, and as we were walking across the street in the crosswalk, I tried to cross my foot behind and kick him in the butt.  Well, I had my bookbag and gym back on across my chest, and the sudden movement threw all that weight in one direction, and I went down like a ton of bricks in the middle of the crosswalk.  Every time my friend or I bring up that story, we end up laughing so hard we can hardly breathe.
