I have about 20 family members (we consider them family even though they aren't - it is my Gramma's best friend and they grew up together so the family has known each other for 80+ years) holding out on their RSVPs because a cousin's husband is not expected to survive his melanoma and brain cancer and he was given just weeks to live and is going downhill fast....so they (understandably) don't want to RSVP until they know whats going on.  I'm not super close w/ this particular cousin but they are family none-the-less

My RSVP date is in 2 weeks and the wedding is in 7.......with the final head count due in 6 weeks.

Just stressing a little bit because everything is in limbo.....

Can you explain to the caterer the situation?  I should think that two weeks prior to the wedding would be enough time to order whatever food items they need.  Unless you are requesting pretty unique items.    It's worth a try to talk to the caterer and ask the drop dead date.  It's better than just waiting.  Best wishes.

@sudslover....thanks! thats a good suggestion - I think one it gets to be 2 weeks out and I still don't hear back from them I will notify the caterer.

This is tough because you could be stuck at the last minute.  20 people is a lot of extra plates to pay for if they end up not being able to come.

If the head count isn't due for 6 weeks I wouldn't worry too much. At that point you're going to be like 2 weeks out from your wedding and the family will probably have made their decision. Couldn't hurt to clue the caterer in though.
