We met with a caterer last week to do a testing and their food was AH-MAZING, so we decided to go with them. They had mentioned they do a lot of ‘family style’ meals nowadays and although I’ve heard of them before…I’ve never been to a wedding that has had it. Basically, they bring out plated salads, then two main courses, a veggie, and a starch (or two), and rolls and its like Sunday dinner… serve yourself. I like this because people can have has much or as little as they’d like of something and the whole dinner seems like it would go faster, PLUS it would encourage mingling.
Has anyone done a family style dinner or have they been to a wedding that did it? Any pros/cons?

I prefer family style. You get as much or as little of each thing as you iike. You do not have to worry about your 300 lb friend and your 100 lb friend having o eat the same size dinner

I’ve been a banquet server and maybe 25-40% of the weddings we had did family style. It was nice in that the guests could take as much/little as they’d like and avoid the foods they didn’t. I liked it as a server because it was easy to keep track of what tables needed more of x,y,or z. It does seem a little less formal than a full plated sit-down meal, but I think they’re a great idea.

So I should have done a ‘family style’ search before I posted. It looks like the majority of people have great things to say about it.
Our wedding is pretty formal (which uhm, isn’t how I anticipated but the dress pushed the formality up a notch–I seriously had NO idea how important the dress played into everything–I was clueless-oops), but I think the family style will still work 🙂
