I've always found buffet's to have warmer food than plated at friends weddings.
What exactly is family style? Is this where they bring the individual buffets to each table? My cousins wedding did that and the food was hot, but there wasn't enough for everyone.
I went to one recently. Be careful with your centerpieces!
Plan the menu around foods that don't taste bad if they're not super hot and you'll be fine.
@kermie: Pretty much, but instead of buffet trays it's served on platters... like as if you were in your house and having friends over for dinner. All the food is on the table and people serve themselves.
We're doing family style. Most weddings in my culture serve dinner family style and the food is always warm. Maybe it's because the caterers are used to the process and know how to time everything to keep it warm. We're breaking down our dinner into courses as follows:
First Course: 10 cold appetizers and starters all served family style. this will include differnt salads, amuse buches, and appetizer type dishes.
Second Course: 3 hot appetizers. these will be served to each table at the same time but because it's only 3 plates per table, the caterer can make sure everything is warm.
Third Course: plated entree. Each guest will receive an individually plated entree, (per their prior selection), with a side of veggies and mashed potatoes.
Forth Course: Dessert Buffet, Fruit and Cheeses. This will be self serve buffet style.
I love the concept of family style since it lets people choose what they want. Unfortunately, the two wedding's I've been to where they've had family style food - the food ran out when it made it past 6 or 7 people! Both venues said that they didnt' have any extra food! So make sure there is going to be plenty and I think it will be fine!
We are serving family style, too. But it's like 4 or 5 courses. Only 2 dishes at a time. (2 pastas, 2 meats, ect). It shouldn't have to be room tempature. However, ours is at a restaurant, you are having yours off-site? Maybe they can't keep them warm.
Family Style is what we're doing at our wedding, but each table will be getting their own platter. This way there won't be any problems with the food not being hot. Also, I think it's less likely that people will take too much food and we'll run out. After all, it's easier to portion things out when you're looking at everyone at the table versus the platter right there.

Is anyone else planning on doing a family-style reception dinner? I'm really excited about doing this, but some caterers are telling me that they can't guarantee the food will be hot. That it's more likely to be warm or room temperature.
I get the issue -- unlike a buffet, there's no way to keep the food hot once it leaves the stove/oven and is on the dish. They could warm each individually before bringing it out, but that would take a few minutes and if you have 10 tables that means the last table doesn't get their food until 45 minutes after the first one.
I'm not okay serving my guests room temperature food, but I really love the causal, homey feel of the family-style concept. Argh!
