Our daughter was born in June, and she slept in our room, so we just used the ceiling fan. You don't have to go out and buy a new fan, unless you really want to.
I did buy a table fan for the baby's room- for the white noise it creates mainly but also to (duh) circulate the air. Use what you have- for us we were going to buy a noise machine but the fan was more affordable, cuter and helps with our hot weather.

Hi All.
DS is 10 days old today..YAY We are adjusting well.
I was wondering if anyone with a newbie that sleeps in the room with them uses a fan. We have baby in his bassinet next to our bed. Our room is on the smaller side, with a big radiator and we have been keeping the door shut when we sleep because of the animals. I noticed today it was really stuffy in the bedroom when we all woke up. We set our heat at 68 at night but it normally heats up to about 70 and leaves the room feeling hot. I want to do everything I can to reduce the SIDS risk and have been reading that fans can be a great way to reduce.
We have a ceiling fan, so was wondering if that is the type of fan others use or did they go out and get a standing fan? I don't want the baby to be too cold either, we do live in the NYC area with chilly nights.
Any thoughts/suggestions on what others did?
