has been killed........what great news, the worlds most hated man is dead......long may he rot
http://beta.uk.news.yahoo.com/al-qaeda-leader-osama-bin-laden-killed-042212194.html
Yup, In my family we are elated, most of my family is active duty militart with about half in theater. My FB is still chirping four hours after the announcement. So proud of our military men and women and of the intelligence community.
Meh. I have trouble celebrating anyone's death, no matter how horrible they are.
Hmmm, horrible doesnt quite describe this man though, thats a bit like saying Hitler wasnt a very friendly person.......a bit of an understatement.
he was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.....I for one am glad he got what was coming to him.
As I said on my facebook (a friend in active duty was having issues with ppl "celebrating" his death) I am not happy that a death occured in the capture of him, but happy he is no longer around. I wish he were captured and had a trial, but to be honest they probably would have liked him captured alive also for information and better PR, but killing him was propbably the only way to take him out. Also if he had gone to trial I have no doubt he would have been executed anyway because he has no remorse over anything he had done.
So yes, I think he is dead. People will find doubt over everything if they totally dont understand
@iheartnerds: same here.
I'm happy for our troops, I'm happy he can no longer harm people... but I just can't celebrate the death of a person...
If anything, I'm a bit worried all our celebrations shown on the news combined with his killing is going to make the people he had in line in case of this event show us that they are not gone.
I was going to start a thread on whether or not it's appropriate (or wise) to be celebrating Osama Bin Laden's death by screaming and partying in the streets. Of course, I'm as happy as any other person that America finally nailed him, but I wonder if celebrating so publicly won't bring down some extra wrath from the jihadists. I know how I felt when I saw them dragging a dead American soldier through the streets while they whooped and partied it up. Just adds fuel to the fire.
Anyway, it had to be done and as they say in Texas, "He needed killing". Good for Obama too!
I get that people are happy that "the face" of 9/11 is dead but the fact of the matter is that this will have a negligible effect on the presence of Al Qaeda. It's one man in a large organization that will continue to plot in his absence. Osama is but a face for a thriving organization and I'm more concerned with how you can ever stop Al Qaeda - for me, Bin Laden is sort of a secondary problem in the whole big picture. HE didn't personally kill all those people, Al Qaeda did, and well, they're still operating. It's been 10 years since 9/11, my sentiment is more along the lines of "uh, it's about time."
I am relieved that they found him and killed him but scared on what will happen next? How mad Al Qaeda will be and what they will plan to attack us. They do horrible horrible things that aren't even shown on our news (from what they were stating on every channel last night).
Also, whenever I hear Bin Laden is dead I start singing in my head the song from Wizard of Oz-the witch is dead. I have no idea why! lol
I was in NYC on September 11, 2011.
I saw everything happen from our conference room on 39th and 9th Avenue. I had to walk across the 59th Street bridge in fear that they were going to take the bridges next. This was the scareiest day of my life and I had to see a majority of my friends deal with the loss of a loved one.
I am So glad he is dead. I hope it was a horribly painful death. May he rot in hell and I hope they get the others and brutally murder them as well. This is a good day!
@Mrs.MedinaJr: OMG! I was doing the same thing last night (with the Wizard of Oz song). Glad I'm not the only one!
@Miss Lilac: you may be right, but Osama Bin Laden Master minded 9/11 therefore this is a huge victory. He was a rich man and was able to make things happen. At least our guard is up like it always has been to prevent future attacks.
@iheartnerds: Really? So you are mourning the death of a mass killer? Um you don't think he deserved it???
While I may not be out "celebrating" his death, I am certainly happy he was served some sort of justice.
Just think of all the innocent civilians killed on 9/11, and all of the soldiers we have buried in the subsequent wars - including a classmate of mine who was killed in Afghanistan at age 22.
He left behind a pregnant wife. It's not too difficult for me to be happy about Osama's death. If anyone deserved to die, it was him.
@muckmoo1: I was in NYC on 9/11 too. It really sucked. I appreciate that he has received justice and am very proud of those who carried out the mission that brought him to justice.
However, I don't think that anyone's death is cause for celebration. No matter how horrible the person. Appreciation maybe but not celebration. This doesn't mean I don't think he deserved it and neither does it mean that anyone who feels this way is "mourning" him.
All I'm going to say is an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.
I agree with the PP's about celebrating death. I too am happy that many people have found peace, and closer with Osama bin Laden's death, but I am not really in favor of the celebration of it. It kinda wierds me out,
I think he was dead long ago... and doesn't anyone else find it weird that he was just buried at sea??? I can't help but question a lot of things that the US gov't comes up with.. this included.
@leembee: If you read one of the other posts about this, it explains why he was buried at sea - in accordance to Muslim rituals. I thought it was really interesting to read!
And thank god he is dead. Can you imagine if he went to trial here? The money involved?? The kidnappings overseas in attempts to get him freed?
THAT would have sucked.
So thank god for bullseye but really, he was just head cockroach. There are already thousands up to take his place
I saw someone post this from Proverbs:
“Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he is overthrown”
Good advice, but hard to follow.
Nice thought but my hubby is infantry. That wouldn't wash in my household :P lol
@leembee: Interesting theory...I hadn't thought of that or seen the skepticism yet. I did think at one point he was assumed dead because he had some sort of illness? I'm not really sure. But I tend to believe the news we heard last night.
@muckmoo1: I agree with those who feel odd celebrating a death, no matter who's. But that most definately does not mean I am mourning his death. I am thrilled that the US no longer has to worry about him specifically. I can't even imagine what you went through that day.
I think it's a relief that he's no longer a threat, but I don't think that it's cause for celebration. I just can't celebrate answering violence with violence, even if it's the murder of a monster.
ETA: Plus, I don't think that the threat of terrorism is any less today than it was yesterday. If anything, I feel LESS safe now, because of the potential of retaliation.
@sloth: Agree with this.
ETA: In fact, news coverage of celebrations last night reminded me of seeing the news covering those celebrating (supporters of Osama bin Laden) after 9/11. Sickening feeling.
@sloth: Totally agree with all that you said. I'm also very worried about retaliation and what could happen next! I'm sure many eager Al Qaeda guys are jumping at the bit to take his place.
I can't be sorry he's dead. Just feel grim satisfaction. Too many friends in theater or about to go. At least we finally got a morale boost.
I think it's always so interesting to see different people's reactions to news like this.
@sloth: I agree.
My DH actually brought an American flag with him to work in his briefcase in case there is a parade. He works next to ground zero.
I want to make a T-shirt or pin that says I Heart Navy Seals.
I agree with PPs that I don't feel any more safe than yesterday (although I have never felt particularly unsafe either for that matter).
I do think that we have now opened the door to some kind of retaliation from Al Qaeda.
@Mrs.KMM: Really you did?? I haven't sang it out loud but I want too so bad!
Well they have submitted a picture of his dead body. He looked like he had a hell of a night and thankfully it looks like it was nice and painful! YAAAAY!
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."
~ Martin Luther King
@muckmoo1: you mean this? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/02/osama-bin-laden-photo-fake
"I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."
