I was all set to use "You've got a Friend" by James Taylor, but the I am worried that the song is mostly negative, so I am looking for other ideas.

Any ideas for a mostly non-sappy father daughter dance song?!

My dad and I are dancing to "Daddy" by Kendall Payne.  It's BEAUTIFUL!! but, it's not a sappy "Butterfly Kisses" song.

    Here are the lyrics:

How long have I been dreaming? Who forgot to wake, to wake me up?
I know it sounds crazy but daddy now I think I’m in love
Cause when he steps in the room my heart begins to pound

You said, “Never settle,” you promised there was one out there for me
It’s true, I might have doubted but he’s standing here and now *, now* I believe
Yes, I know you’ll be proud of the man that chose me

It’s elementary to the wise, for the fool in full disguise
Beggars bow and poets kneel, and as for me… it’s finally real

I will always love you and I will always be your little girl
None could come between us, you’ll forever be the first man in my world
But when he smiles I can see how much he reminds me of you
A man of faith, a man of strength, who loves me like you do

*It’s elementary to the wise, for the fool in full disguise
Beggars bow and poets kneel, and as for me… it’s finally real*

How long have I been sleeping? Who forgot to wake, to wake me up?
Daddy, he’s amazing, he’s everything that I’ve been dreaming of
And now he has become my very best friend…

*It’s elementary to the wise, for the fool in full disguise
Beggars bow and poets kneel, and as for me… it’s finally real*

*It's all the time I've spent in tears. Worth the heartace, worth the fears. To stand beside him on this day after you give me away.*

Good luck picking your song! : )

We might not do special dances now, but if we do I plan to use "Daughter" by Loudwin Wainwright (that is probably really poorly spelled haha).

My dad and I are dancing to Nat and Natalie King Cole's duet of "Unforgettable."  Perfect father/daughter duet for a perfect father/daughter dance in my opinion =)

I fell in love with the song my dad and I used in may. We danced to "you'll be in my heart" by phil collins from the disney tarzan soundtrack. I knew pretty much from the beginning that I wanted that song.

We are dancing to Joy of my Life by John Fogerty.  Other songs we thought of were My Wish by Rascal Flatts, Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel and You Raise Me Up by The Celtic Women.

Have you asked your dad what he wants?

What about Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely"? It's more upbeat, so it's not sappy, and it's a fun song!

My Dad and I are dancing to Desperado by the Eagles.  The song and the Eagles  have a lot of meaning to us.  I know most people will think its strange, but I don't care.  So if you like "You've got a friend" because its what you think of when you think about your Dad, use it. And I don't think it has a lot of Negative in it.  Its just saying I'll be there for you whenever you need me.  I think its very sweet.

I really wanted "the best day" by taylor swift, but my step mom said that my dad wanted to pick out the song so I let it go. I think it is nice that he wanted to do that =)

We are dancing to Edwin McCain's "Walk With You"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LBUMnQgSTs

    Lyrics: Walk With You

I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you
You’ll let go of my hand to say: I do
He will discover just how blessed a life can be
I know cuz all those years ago
    Someone handed you to me

    Every step that we take
    Brings back the memories
    Winter snows and horse shows
    Dancing on the beach
I can’t help thinking that I’m the lucky one
    You’re still my baby daughter
And now I’ve gained a son

    Chorus
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you
You’ll let go of my hand to say : I do
He will discover just how blessed a life can be
I know ‘cause all those years ago
Your mom handed you to me

Don’t miss a chance to put each other first
Now that you’ve vowed for better or for worse
Don’t let the beauty of this life pass you by
In the times of trouble you’ll stand side by side

    Chorus
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you
You’ll let go of my hand to say : I do

I picture a slow sweet walk yet to be
When you’ll take my hand and say : Daddy come see
Then you’ll know what it felt like
You won’t believe what it feels like
Then you’ll know what it felt like
When she handed you to me

    She handed you to me

"Daddy" by Kendall Payne is really sweet! I'm still looking for a F/D song, and while i love the lyrics, this one seems really slow for dancing. Sigh, I can't figure it out! I'm not much for country, and that's what most of the F/D songs out there are!

My Dad and I danced to "Daughter" by Loudon Wainwright III...and it was just fun and the lyrics were so us.

However, we also considered these songs too...

"Your Smiling Face" by James Taylor (I think this one could be a bride/groom first dance too, but the more my dad and I listened to it the more we thought it fit well for a man who has a daughter and how his whole view on love changes...plus it has a great section where the music drops out and is one of those moments where you just want to through up your arms and start the big crowd clap.

"Don't go changing" by Billy Joel.

@7SEVENJ9: It is slow.  That is the one thing I would change about the song... make it a little faster for dancing purposes.  But the words are beautiful, and it could not line up more with my relationship with my fiance and my dad.  I wanted a song that was about my dad giving me away, not just about me and my dad, so when I found that song, I fell in love.

Are you slow dancing for your father daughter dance, or did you want something kinda peppy?  My concern with this song was that it would be to slow and drawn out for our guest to watch, so we're playing a slide show in the background with pictures of me and my parents growing up, with the lyrics over it.

As crazy as it is, I think the father/daughter dance song was the hardest one for me to pick out.  Good luck finding yours! : )

I let my dad pick the song and he actually picked "Butterfly Kisses" so what may be sappy to some may not be sappy to others, as long as my dad is happy about it thats all that matters to me.

If we do one, we'll do "When you wish upon a star" (the Louis Armstrong version---we'll edit it to make it shorter).   We watched pinocchio (and every other disney movie ever made) together, and so it fits.  As an added bonus, FI and FMIL can dance to it too so that we can do a combined dance.

Thanks, everyone! I am still listening to all of the songs, but am also considering "My Girl" by the Temptations. That woudl be fun and upbeat, not too sappy either.

I wish my dad would give me some suggestions, but I think he is nervous that he has to dance and doesn't know what to pick!

I am doing 'In my life' by the Beatles.  I am a huge Beatles fan and it is a really pretty song.  Not a typical father daughter song but it really suits us.

I was engaged many years ago and since the dads dont really have much say in the planning I asked my dad to pick our song. He looked online for days and once a week he would have a list of songs for me to listen to. One of them was a Scottish song or something like that and in the song they say Me Daughter so now that is what he calls me in a wicked cool Irish/Scottish/Indian accent.  I called off that wedding 5 years ago and he is still looking for songs.

Let your dad help pick it out you will be amazed at what they can come up with.

Stacia, what a great idea with the slideshow! I figured I'd slow dance with dad, but he's more of a peppy guy... I wonder if there's an up-tempo version - the lyrics are perfect!!!

My dad chose "Walk with You" by Edwin McCain, but if you're into country, "It won't be like this for long" by Darius Rucker brought tears to my eyes and I normally don't cry over lyrics!

We are dancing to "I Loved Her First" by Heartland. Check it out, it's really nice.

    Here are the lyrics:

Heartland- "I Loved Her First" - Lyrics

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each others face
So much in love you're alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world
I was enough for her not long ago
    I was her number one
    She told me so
And she still means the world to me
    Just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl
    Time changes everything
    Life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it still hard to give her away
    I loved her first

How could that beautiful woman with you
Be the same freckled face kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to
And tucked into bed all those nights
And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But its still hard to give her away
    I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you

    I loved her first

We're probably dancing to "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac, unless my dad comes up with something he likes better. He influenced my love of classic and southern rock, so I'm hoping we go with a song from one of those genres to represent our relationship.

@jaylii9: We had such issues trying to find something not sappy, but also appropriate for father/daughter.  My dad and I both love Van Morrison, but all of his songs are just ... inappropriate.  We finally decided on another James Taylor -- "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You."  It's upbeat, the lyrics are fine, and it's sweet without being sappy.

@magilnyc: I heard him sing this song at one of his shows. (I am shamelessly addicted to Edwin's music). He opened with it, just him and his guitar...I cried. My sister cried. I knew it was the one.
