Well my dad and I are dancing to 'I Loved Her First' by Heartland. It's about how your dad is the first guy to love you, hold you and kiss you, but now he's handing you over to someone else and how he wants this new man to take care of his baby girl. It's country, so I don't know if you care for that, but it's sweet.
My dad got so excited about it that he downloaded it as his ringtone on his phone and it's what rings when I call now. And let me just tell you that my dad is not the best with cell phones, and it took him over an hour and a phone call to AT&T to download it so I was really touched by that.
My Dad and I are dancing to Darius Rucker's "It Won't Be Like This For Long".
My dad and I will be using phil keaggy's Father Daughter Harmony. It was our song when I was little. I love it because it is just about a dad and his daughter and how much they love eachother.
What about When You Come Back Down by Nickel Creek? My sister and Dad danced to that at her wedding. Its not directly about a father/daughter relationship. But its about supporting someone, which sounds like it may apply to both you and your dad. Below are the first two verses.
You got to leave me now, you got to go alone
You got to chase a dream, one that's all your own
Before it slips away
When you're flyin' high, take my heart along
I'll be the harmony to every lonely song
That you learn to play
When you're soarin' through the air
I'll be your solid ground
Take every chance you dare
I'll still be there
When you come back down
When you come back down
@kellybell: this is a beautiful song. I have been searching for something that isn't over the top, and this is perfect. lovely and sentimental but not in your face. love.
@peaches1038: I know, I love this song! It has such a great nessage, and its not super common. Too bad my sister has already used it, and I don't want to steal her song! I am still looking for my song.
@Miss Sweet Tea: I love that song!
My dad and I danced to, Your Song by Elton John. Not the perfect father/daughter song, but we both love it and it means something to us.
I'm really sorry to hear about your dad's illness. :-(
I don't know if this song would work for you but my dad and I are dancing to Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World (the Hawaiian sounding version) sung by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Really a lovely song with a lovely sentiment.
My dad and I are dancing to Kind and Generous by Natalie Merchant. I picked it as my song with him long before I even met my FI! I told my best friend about it, and now whenever she hears it she tears up. LOL!
I like it because it talks about being grateful to this person for giving you unconditional support, and love. I also like that it's not a typical daddy/daughter song because that's just not me. I love my dad and we are close, but I am much closer to my mom. Also, it's a little more upbeat than a typical ballad, which I like. I will however be bawling through the whole thing, I'm sure. I'm a sap.
Thank you everyone! Every time I listen to songs I start crying, so I'm not sure I want to pick one that will run my makeup on the day!! I LOVE the Rascall Flatts song " I won't let go" because it is about me supporting him. Do you think this is too sad for a dance? It does say during this dark time in life..so it would be more talking about the cancer, and less about the happy day. I LOVE the Hawaiaan rainbow song..thinking of incorporating that during the ceremony!

I am trying to find the perfect song to dance with my dad to. He is going through chemo right now and has a very serious cancer. It came out of no where last October. My dad wasnt around much when I was a kid as he was working a lot so none of the "tucking me into bed" songs applyi. Once I was a teenager we became very close and he has been my complete life mentor. He is a very successful businesman who always gets what he wants. It is so hard to see something taking over his body he cannot control. I want a song that means the same from him to me as it does from me to him. Something talking about how he is so strong, supportive and loving and a fighter. Any suggestion? Going to be an emotional dance!!
