I'm not a big fan of country music, so far a majority of good father/daughter,Mother/son songs are all country. I really would like an acoustic singer/songwriter. Someone like Jack Johnson or Dashboard Confessionals, or Ace Enders... Does anyone have any ideas?

For my Dad and I, I've chosen "When You Wish Upon a Star" because we always see Disney movies together. I call them Daddy Daughter Disney Day (alliteration, yay!) Is there something that the two of you usually do together which would make it more special?

I am looking for the same thing for the son/mother dance. Country doesn't fit my man. My dad and I have had our picked for years. It is my favorite irish song, but that won't help you out.

I recently found "Sweet Child o' Mine" really chill Hawaiian style. iTunes the name of the song and it's one of the versions listed...

I totally second Daughter by Loudon Wainwright.  I suppose it might sound too country to you, but I detest country music and I love it, so I thought it was worth mentioning.  I'd classify it more as folk than country.  It's very sweet and not at all twang-y.

Ooops!  I meant the "somewhere over the rainbow" acoustic version (not "what a wonderful world")  It's sung by a guy named Israel (or IZ)

    The song is absolutely beautiful

There is a Jimmy Buffet song called "Little Miss Magic" that's really sweet. It was in the running for my father/daughter dance.

P.S. If you're wondering what I ended up choosing, it's a custom mix that I crafted with sound editing software on my computer... yeah, that's how I roll!

We're doing Stevie Wonder "Sunshine of my life" sooo not a country girl either. What about some Frank Sinatra or some of the chill/hawaiian versions of songs "Somewhere over the rainbow"?

I like Dylan's Forever Young.  Stand By Me is a sweet song too.

I dunno if I'd use "Sweet Child o'Mine" because it is really about romantic love, which is apparent from the lyrics. Axl Rose wrote it about his girlfriend.  Then again, lots of times people don't pay attention.  I've heard of lots of people using Brown Eyed Girl, even though that's clearly about romantic love.

I second "She's Always a Woman" by Billy Joel, that would be great. My husband and his mom danced to Josh Groban, You Raise Me Up. I found it to be a tad dramatic, but it wa the song that she really wanted to dance to.
