I'm getting married in 8 days and still have to decide on a 'daddy daughter dance'. The problem is that my dad and i aren't close, there is a lot of tension between us (in fact, my mom is giving me away in the ceremony). Truthfully, the only reason we're having this dance is because I don't want to deal with the drama if we don't. SO that being said, I need help.
The traditional, dad you're great, you're my hero, you always loved me songs just don't cut it. I refuse to pretend that was the case, even for a four minute song. So please, give me some suggestions for an appropriate, slow dance song with my dad.
I'm considering 'more i cannot wish you' from Guys and Dolls, or copping out and doing like 'what a wonderful world' or something like that.
My only other suggestion, would be to actually ask your dad for suggestions.
Just because there is tension between you doesn't meen that he doesn't feel the sentiments expressed by the traditional father/daughter dance songs.
Keep in mind that the songs typically used are from a father to a daughter. So, that you don't want "dad you're great, you're my hero, you always loved me songs" is OK- it's supposed to me more like, "daughter you're wonderful, I love you, your husband is lucky, you're a lady" type sentiments.
My dad and I are dancing to "If I Could" by Ray Charles- which is about a father/parent's wishes for their children/child.
I feel really bad for you..don't make it harder than what you have to. It sounds cheesy, but do what your heart tells you. If there isn't a song that describes your relationship or one that you feel comfortable dancing to because the words feel "forced"- then pick something totally generic. "It's a Wonderful World" was actually a good choice, not a cop out.
We are thinking of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" We chose it because we are doing the mother/son and father/daughter dances together, and so we wanted something kind of generic. And we think that song is more just about the general feeling in the room than about any specific relationship, and so works for almost any relationship.
I'm with the generic group! We're also doing the mother/son, father/daughter dance together. I mean, I know it's my day but who really wants to watch me and my dad dance for 4 minutes and then watch my FI and his mom for another 4 minutes?!
Our song is That's All by Michael Buble and we will dance with our parents to Unforgettable by Nat King and Natalie Cole, then all six of our parents will come and join us on the floor to Fly Me to the Moon by Diana Krall. We're saving the first dance until after dinner so that it kicks off the dancing and true party.
On a lighter note I always thought that Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof "Is this the little girl I carried, Is this the liitle boy at play..." is just too much!!
My dad and I work with eachother but dont have a "close personal relationship" which I know sounds wierd, but we are more like business partners than father daughter. Yeah okay, it does sound really weird.
But I chose "Youve got a friend" By James Taylor. I think its very appropriate for the daughter that isnt exactly "daddys little girl."
I danced with my uncle to In My Life by the Beatles. It might work for you. It's short and not really about father/daughter relationships, and it's not too sappy.
There are places I remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more In my life I love you more
Or, depending on your musical tastes, Do You Realize? by the Flaming Lips might work. It's a little long, but you could always ask the DJ to fade it out early. It's a really pretty song just about life in general.
Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face Do You Realize - we're floating in space - Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Do You Realize - Oh - Oh - Oh Do You Realize - that everyone you know Someday will die -
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face Do You Realize
Thanks for your feedback! I made a decision tonight to use 'sentimental journey'. Its a good generic song that has memories for my family, so it should work out okay.
