So my dad and I have had a tumultuous relationship my whole life. He isn’t walking me down the aisle, but he does want to do a father/daughter dance and I think that’s fine. We don’t hate each other (most of the time) but we just butt heads a LOT. I am looking for a song that is nice but doesn’t imply that we’re the best of friends or I’m his “Little Girl.” I think it’s wonderful for ladies who have that kind of relationship with their dads, but that’s just not us and I’d feel odd and so would our guests. On top of that, I’m also looking for a song my Fiance and his mom could dance to at the same time.
Up for the challenge?
So here are the parameters: not country appropriate for father/daughter and mother/son not sappy: no mention of daddy, or little girl, or I loved her first, or, heaven forbid, butterfly kisses (again, a great song if that’s your relationship, but that’s just not us)
So far I’ve found maybe one possibility, but it’s rough going. Event “Isn’t she Lovely” is a little odd for us, and that seems to be the standard “not sappy” song. Suggestions?
PS- I know these “not sappy” father/daughter questions have been asked a million times, but I have read those threads and the OP says “not sappy or country” and every suggestion is sappy or country. So here’s hoping for some different suggestions!
We danced to “Let it Be” by the Beatles. I also have an aversion to all things country or “my little girl.” He picked it, apparently he used to sing it to me when I was little. Not the most traditional song, but hey, it made him happy because he’s a Beatles fan.
I know how you feel. My dad and I also have a rough relationship. We’re going the opposite route and doing the walk down the aisle together, minus the giving away, but no father/daughter dance.
For the song, rat pack or jazz may be the way to go for non-sappy, non-country. A quicker pace can also keep it light and prevents it from going into lovey-dovey territory.
“You Make Me Feel So Young” -Frank Sinatra “Cheek to Cheek” -Ella Fitzgerald/Bing Crosby/Any of the other incarnations of this song “It’s a Wonderful World” -Louis Armstrong “Unforgettable” -Nat King Cole
I think these are still a little doting, but without being straight-up lovey and sappy.
@PolkaDotLaceBride: Count on me might be a possibility. I think it’s by Bruno Mars, right? I like that it’s more about friendship than father/daughter stuff. Not that we’re friends, but it feels less forced. 🙂
@misspeanut: Thanks for the link! I’ve actually looked at that before. The song Sweet Pea by Amos Lee is on there and I love it so much I’m considering ignoring the part where he says “you’re the only reason I keep on coming home”
In all likelihood I just need to get over trying to find the perfect song (I don’t think there’s a song called “I like you much better when I live 200 miles away”).
Haha I feel like I gave you all an impossible task. Anyone know a song called “You can’t choose your family”?? 😉
I’m the same with country songs. Not a country girl at all but I heard a song called “House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert and it made me cry (mostly because my house that I grew up in was destroyed in a tornado). I’m not close to my father either but I figure no matter how our relationship is it made me into the person I am today. I’ve taken the good and bad and applied it to myself.
