It depends on which charity. If you were giving money to dig wells in Africa you could give each guest a bottle of water with an explanatory tag.
We're making chocolate chip cookies and putting a sticker on the cookie wrapper saying that we donated $ to the American Cancer Society. FI's dad passed away 3 years ago from Prostate Cancer and his favorite cookie was chocolate chip. I think it will be perfect =)
we haven't made a final decision on the charity - but there'll most likely be 2...and possibly alzheimers and cancer..since both of our families have been affected by those.
Everything I see is edible (like cookies, etc.) but we're having a dessert buffet so I feel like something edible won't be as special enough or something...
Thank you for posting this! We are defintely asking people to donate to charities instead of giving us gifts, and I am considering donating to charity for the favors as well.
A cool favor I've seen around are those little cards that have seeds in them, and you can plant the paper and it grows flowers. That could be cool for an environmental cause, or it could even be tweaked for anything ("growing hope" or some such).
If you still wanted to do something edible but not a dessert, you could do something savory like nuts or popcorn that people could eat as a "late night snack" at the reception or take with them for later. Is there something specific to Seattle that might work? Or even coffee beans, with a cool personalized label?
We are making donations to an animal shelter as our favor because that's how we got our child dog. When we shoot our e-photos next weekend, our photog is going to take a pic of our pup, Chase, with a painted "Thank You" sign on his neck. We're going to print that (probably on plantable paper) and put one at each seat at the reception.
Here's Chase, because I love posting his pic!

We are going the donation route, but aren't giving anything as well. I think it would be best to go with something edible in this case.
Our whole reason for doing a donation is because we want the money to go to something useful rather than some small token that most people will throw out.
@vanilla frosting: dawwwww hi Chase!!! When we ask that guests donate to charity instead of give us gifts, FI will choose one (probably military family-related b/c he is a veteran) and I will probably choose the East Tennessee Pit Bull Rescue. My pittie is going to be our ring bearer. :)
This is my dog w/ my future stepdaughter... She insisted he sit in on a few of her Christmas pics...

@CharlotteMJ- your pittie is SO sweet looking!! Chase is a lab-pitt mix, we think. He is all brindle and gets lots of compliments on his coat. He was an abuse neglect out of Philly which is why we are donating and we will probably donate to one of the Philly orgs. They just did a HUGE bust of three separate dog fighting facilities over the past two days, so they will need all the help they can get!
Have you seen any of the bees' blog posts about letting guests use tokens or marbles to "vote" for one of a few different charities? We're probably doing charity favors also, and I was totally into that idea. If you're thinking of more than one, it could be a fun thing to do.
But you were asking about something to give along with it. I was thinking of doing something like @lindseymagen and putting out a basket of wrapped cookies or some other treat for guests to take as they leave. Then again, we're not having the dessert buffet, so hopefully they'll still be happy to have something sweet!
@vanilla frosting Love, love, love that idea, and your furbaby is so cute! :)
Have you heard of www.trufflesforacause.com? Basically you pick your charity of choice and part of your purchase goes to the charity and part goes to some yummy truffles! They have different price tiers - I think the lowest is $1.75 and you DIY. GL!
@CharlotteMJ: I love pitbulls! I volunteer at the Humane Society and there is a black pitbull, named Mia, that has been there since January.
I would totally adopt her but we just got our Ryder in August. My next dog will be a pittie.
Maybe contact the charity of your choice and see if they have anything to give out. We are donating to the Humane Society and Team in Training's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and will give out these bracelets that cost a $1 each(all proceeds going to the charity) along with a note stating the charity, etc.

We're donating to the animal society as well - we're going to do dog-shaped cookies with a sticker explaining the donation.
I really like the savory snack idea someone posted above - a great balance to a dessert buffet and perfect for people to take on trains/cars as they travel home.

I am thinking about going the charity donation in lieu of favor route, but am looking for something small to give with it...any ideas??
