Delicious food that you love to order on nights out, or because your mom or sister can make it and you're too lazy to learn how to make yourself and promise you will learn someday soon?
My own list includes: Vietnamese food my mama makes like pho (noodle soup), banh bao (steamed dumplings with lots of yummy stuff inside), banh mi (baguette sandwiches).
Things I love to get when I go out: pad thai, green curry with squash, bubble tea, Noodles and Company noodles, and Bulldog cheeseburgers and tater tots. Mmm. I'm really hungry, as you can probably tell.
Here's my beloved Chewie posing with a homemade banh bao! Now, let's hear it from all of you!
really good chinese food - im not asian but i really would like to know how to make it and make it well! starting with dumplings and pork buns
Thai style eggplant, butternut squash soup and sushi. I know I could figure these things out if I wanted to, but why mess with perfection??
Sushi! I know you can make it at home but it's NEVERRRR the same :)
Oysters, too. OK, I like a lot of raw food! Also, a great Prime Rib... cause there is no way I'm gonna make a 10 pound Prime rib if it's not Christmas!
Mmm, I'm Vietnamese too and your banh bao photo makes me so hungry! I love Indian food, particularly samosas, but it's the one food I don't make often at home, because it seems to involve so many different sorts of spices.
I swear my sushi is the same or better! when my brother came to visit we did the most ridiculous amount of sushi you can think of, it was delicius, but we did have leftovers
Sushi--I figure that the sushi chefs are well trained in the art of making sushi, so I'll let them handle the dirty work. :)
ice cream? lol idk Well this one Chinese take out place has pretty amazing general Tsao chicken. And spaghetti and meatballs from Little Italy is always better than what I can make (Though my mom does an amazing job of it!).
Wish I could make a bone-in rib eye that is just as delicious as the one at my favorite steakhoue. =)
soup dumplings from joe's shanghai! im pretty handy in the kitchen, but id NEVER be able to make these at home.
Well I suppose I can't REALLY make Pierogis either. I love them but I seriously dont think i can make them home made! best I can do is buy the frozen ones
Mmmm a key lime pie, or something like a fresh doughnut (can you tell that I am hungry for dessert right now?)
Homemade ravioli. My mom made them the best and I used to help her. But in the 5 years since she died, I've been afraid to try to make them myself. Maybe some weekend I'll rope my fiance in to helping me make them!
I keep trying to do pad thai at home but i have yet to find THE recipe. I will, promise!
Also, chile rellenos. I don't keep big vats of oil around. Also chicken wings. Anything very deep fried is a no can do. Otherwise I'm very much a tackle-all cook. I can do california rolls, but I do real sushi out and about.
Ummm. Oh man. Not much I can think of...I don't eat out all that often though.
Oh, yes, steak, I just can´t cook steak. I boil them, I undercook them, I do some sort of magic that eliminates all of the flavor from the steak!
... spring rolls... it seams like the easiest thing to do
Don´t get me wrong, I´m a great cook! lol
Anything my Gram makes (she is the best cook eevveerr), and I really used to love Applebee's Nachos Nuevos but they changed the recipe and it's just not the same anymore :(. I also love Rita's Italian Ice, and tomorrow they are coming out with their new September flavor... caramel apple!
Oh my god, Noodles&Co. SO GOOD. eloping-- start with a good wok and try blogchef.net . She's got a bunch of really good (but really bad for you!) Chinese recipes. Most require a wok, though.
If I could re-create anything, I'd go with this sweet potato ravioli with maple walnut sauce. It's served at a local pasta shop, and I had it for the first time on our 1-year anniversary dinner. It's SO good, but too expensive to get often :(
CRAB CAKES! I dunno what the heck I am missing but mine don't turn out well at all!
Ooo sweet potato ravioli?! THat sounds insanely delish
OMG...the mom and pop bakery in my home town makes THE very best donuts and pastries EVER,..daily in their little kitchen. There isn't even a decent bakery where I currently live so if I want a good donut I drive a half hour home at like 8 am (to get my pickin's). Talk about desperate huh?
I have to go out for good chinese and mexican. I can make decent mexican dishes at home, but you just can't compare it to the local restaurants!
I love to eat pizza out, but I don't think homemade pizza even compares!
Jeesh I think the only things we make better at home are country style meals. Meat and potatoes, corn on the cob, baked fruit....YUMMMMY.
Um....everything.
I'm really not a cooker. It's the time management...I just can't get it down.
@Thao - I have an easy chickpea curry recipe for you if you're interested! It does call for one spice mix from an Indian grocery store, but other than that it's pretty straightforward.
@everyone who said sushi: I forgot sushi! Mmm.
@tessabella - I'm so sorry about your mom. You should definitely try to make the homemade ravioli someday soon. Hopefully it will bring back some wonderful memories of your mom's cooking... Nothing beats that.
@everything else posted above... you're all making me hungry again!
Pretty much anything, the only thing I'm good at making in the kitchen is a MESS!
LOL!
But really good Mac and Cheese tops the list.
There's quite a list since I'm still learning to cook: sushi, pad thai, bread pudding, really good southern mac & cheese, hush puppies, and coffee cake. We'll stop there before I make myself want dinner #2. :)
I'm with everyone else on the Pad Thai bandwagon! I've tried making it multiple times & fail miserably! Nothing beats Pad Thai w/ Tofu from Noodles in the Pot....YUM!
Does anyone have a tried & true pad thai recipe? If so, please share!!
@penguin totally agree on the sushi!!
i would say french food - duck confit, coq au vin, macarons~! they just take so much effort to make!
and the asian soy sauce duck and bbq duck!
hehe i sense a theme here! duck! :)
Gnocchi- I am great at preparing gnocchi just not making them from scratch. They turned out out be a disaster and were falling apart as I boiled them. I think they took a turn for the worse when I was ricing the potatoes anyways... Maybe next time.
I am also terrible at cooking scallops so I always order them out.
Definitely Chinese food! I think I'm in the majority there!
Oooo I've made gnocchi from scratch. It turned out AWFUL and only has like, 3 ingredients so I have no idea how I messed it up.
BTW, my new favorite post is this one. It's making everything sound so delicious!
I think any "real" ethnic food is definitely a challenge. If anybody needs a kungnamool recipe (korean sprouts) hit me up! I've perfected mine =].
Here's my next pad thai recipe I can't wait to try. It looks more consistently like "real" pad thai (a la Pei Wei Diner style) than any of the other ones I've tried. Or any of the premade sauces (which are awful). I don't know where to buy tamarind though (there's a middle eastern spice store near me) although the rest of the ingredients I could get at the korean grocery market near my house. I got it from a Thai lady's personal blog (not sure where though, sorry!) so I hope it's really good!
2 handfuls of dried thin rice stick (about half a pack of 16 oz dry medium size rice stick noodles)
2 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 tablespoon tamarind water (see notes below)
2 tablespoons fish sauce (substitute with soy sauce and soy bean paste for the same amount for vegetarian)
2 small bunch Chinese chives/leeks (you can substitute green onions but it won't taste the same but it will give a little color to your Pad Thai)
2 teaspoon oil
1red shallot
minced 2 eggs
4 oz extra firm tofu, cut into small cubes and deep fry
4 shrimp, peeled and deveined (optional)
1/2 teaspoon of salted radish, chopped (this is salted daikon, the white raddish. You can skip it if you can't find it. It usually comes in a plastic bag whole or in a tub already minced)
pinch of roasted Thai chili flakes (see notes below) or substitute red pepper flakes. It won't be as spicy but will work fine.
2handfuls of bean sprouts
2 tablespoons of crushed
roasted peanuts & lime wedges
Soak noodles in tap water for about an hour until soft. To check the noodles if they are ready, bend a noodle and if it breaks without any force, it's ready. If not, you have to soak a little longer. Mix palm sugar, white sugar, tamarind water and fish sauce and simmer until dissolved. Chopped Chinese chives into small lengths about 2 inches.
Heat a wok or big pot (Dutch Oven is my favorite, or a big saute pan will do) over medium heat until very hot, add oil and wait until the oil is hot and fry shallots until fragrant and colored. Crack in eggs and scramble. Mix in tofu (and shrimp if using), chili flakes and radish. Stir fry until the tofu is thoroughly heated up and then add noodles. Stir-fry for a while until the noodle is softer and change color. Add the prepared sauce and a pinch of chili flakes. Stir for a few moments. Finally, add most of the bean sprouts and Chinese chives and cook for another 30 seconds. The noodles should be a little sweet, sour and salty.
When served, top the noodles with crushed peanut, fresh Chinese chives, bean sprouts, a wedge or two of lime and chili flakes(if want it a little hotter).
Note: to make Thai chili flakes, buy dry Thai chilies and dry roast them in a pan on the stove for 10 minutes, stirring constantly, or toast them in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. Put the chilies in a food processor and pulse until they become flakes.
:to make tamarind water, take about a golf ball size tamarind paste, put water in it and let
Definitely sushi and Indian food...I know they are possible to make at home, but it's too many ingredients to bother with.
I can make anything and everything overly complicated and difficult French/British/American/Modern/Mexican/Italian/Spanish/German-wise (down to the last detail, all from scratch, buttter, cheese, jams, curds, etc. etc.), but I flat out stink at making ANY Asian food :P Sucks every time, lol
@ejs4y8 - THANK YOU!!! I am going to give it a go, perhaps this weekend. yum. yum. YUM!
@ejs4y8: I think my mom has used tamarind in her cooking. Have you looked in the dry spices aisle of the Korean grocery store? Or at a general Asian grocery store? I found this website that describes it a little more: http://www.templeofthai.com/food/pickled_preserved/tamarindpaste-2210481132.php
As long as we're posting recipes, I'm going to add my best friend/MOH's mom's channa masala (chickpea curry) recipe:
1 medium onion
2 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon cumin
14.5 oz diced tomatoes
1 spoon tomato paste
1/2 spoon salt
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
Can of garbanzo beans
1/2 and 1/4 teaspoon channa masala*
Lime juice
Basmati rice
Sautee onion, oil and cumin together over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, chili powder and coriander powder. Cover and cook for 5 - 6 minutes. Meanwhile, wash and mince a handful of garbanzo beans. Add the minced beans, the rest of the garbanzo beans, 1/2 teaspoon of channa masala. Cover and sit for 10 minutes - stirring occasionally. Add salt to taste. Turn the heat off. Add 1/4 teaspoon of channa masala. Add some lime juice. Mix it all together. Serve with basmati rice. And eat!!
*Channa masala is a curry powder that I got at an Indian grocery store. It comes in a little box and will probably last indefinitely, and is enough to make this recipe many times over.
Eggs Benedict...I try and try and try and no matter how delicious it turns out in my own kitchen, it is NEVER as good as at a restaurant.
@jduck, thanks! there is a korean store RIGHT by me, but it's so authentically korean I can't read half the stuff so I just go off of what looks familiar to me and the people who own it don't speak much english. There is a chinese grocery store somewhere near me at work....I just have to dig around. If i must, i'll buy it online. But, the K store did have curry paste (red and green) so i bet it was probably right there in front of my face
