@SouthernGirl:  For my sisters baby shower I gave her some beautiful Peter Rabbit books.

My nephew is now 3 and loves these books:)

Best advice: stick to the registry if there is one! A lot of moms usually put a lot of thought into the items they put on their registry.

Other than that, my favorite things were items that came from moms who loved a product and knew I would need it. There was usually an explanation to go along with it.

@SouthernGirl:  I got the skip hop pronto, it’s like a diaper changer clutch thing and I used it to death. you can fit it in a lot of bags so you aren’t stuck with carrying around an ugly diaper bag all the time!

My diaper genie is a freaking lifesaver! It holds tons of diapers without a smell or my having to look at them and is super easy to use. I also go through burp cloths and receiving/swaddling blankets like crazy. and I actually didn’t get any at my shower.

And I totally agree with @MrsDW: about sticking to the registry! It seemed like all my close friends and family kept asking me what item not on the registry did I really want, because they wanted it to be special. And everyone wants to get something pretty and centimental. But honestly, that stuff is just not practical – the stuff on the registry is there because they really need it!

Another vote for the registry! My favorite things I got as gifts were our expensive items (swing, pack n play, mattress, carseat) because that meant I didn’t have to buy them myself haha but seriously, anything on the registry is a great choice, like PP said the parent’s to be usually spend a ton of time tweeking it to make sure it’s everything they’ll need but not too much else (I know DH and I spent 3 different trips and countless hours online comparing items and altering the registry) so you’re guaranteed they will love it and use it.

My baby isn’t here yet but I already love my muslin swaddle blankets. Once I know the baby’s gender I will definitely be buying more of those!

@SouthernGirl:  I would go with something on the registry… unless she’s a first mom who doesn’t have her own mom to help her pick. Because man…. new moms don’t know what they need!

Someone bought this thing for my nephew and it’s freaking MAGIC. It has different setting for “sleep, play, calm” and I swear it makes him do exactly that! It’s amazing. Totally calms him down even though right now he’s teething like made.

I always make/buy lots of recieving blankets. In the first month or so my sister only had like 5 and she went through them every single day. I finally went out and bought more. The baby would pee on them or spit up or whatever. I think from now on I’ll just buy every receiving blanket on the registry times 3.

@SouthernGirl:  no registry and 2nd child? I would offer to bring a meal by once a week for a few weeks. Or try taking the older child off her hands.

For a second child & no registry I’d probably get an amazon gift card.

Oh second baby? I would bring an outfit or 2, or an outfit and a blanket or something. Nothing crazy.

Gift card for house cleaning services. You could also coordinate a mealtrain.com for her friends and family once to baby is here. That was the best gift I got.
