Central Park and Grand Central Station are favorites for classic NYC engagement pictures.

 Meatpacking District is great for edgier, gritty look.

South Street Seaport is where we plan on taking our wedding photos, becauses its beautiful and by the water.

if you like the edgy/industrial look, williamsburg is great

other places include:  dumbo (brooklyn bridge/manhattan skyline as your backdrop), battery park, the botantical gardens and the cloisters (a branch of the metropolitan museum of art dedicated to the middle ages located in Fort Tryon Park)

i would try photographers' blogs.  my nyc photog (danny weiss) has a blog that he updates with pictures from events.  I've seen engagement pictures on there.  i would also try other nyc based photographers to see if they have a blog.
