Ruth's Chris Steakhouse! That place is absolutly amazing. My and my FI go there for our bdays (about 2 weeks apart so we just go once) and it is worth it. All the sides are a la carte and there is plenty to share. The steaks don't need anything on them at all, they are perfect.
Funny story.. Last time we went there we took some freinds and one asked for some sauce for his steak. The waiter looked at him like he was crazy and politly asked if he had eaten there before, our friend hadn't. The waitor proceeded to look an me and my FI and said he would bring it out only after our friend tried his steak, with a big goodfy grin. We were both giggling uncontrolably and our friend was like "what, i cant eat it plain". Well the steaks came out, the waiter waited for him to take a bite. Once he did the waited said "you still need that sauce sir?" and our frind turned bright red and just nodded no.
It was halarious. The seasoning on the steaks are amazing. Our freind is one of the most picky ppl we know when it comes to food and even he was impressed.
My favorite cheap eats is Hai Ky Mi Gia. My favorite non-cheap eats is Delfina. Last time I was there, everything in Delfina was kick-ass.
If you're craving Greek, try Kokkari in SF... I think about it a lot! Pricey, but not over the top.
Dopo in Oakland has really awesome pizza, pasta. Mmm. Love it like I love Delfina, but it's easier to get into (doesnt take reservations but we just go there really late... they're open decently late)
Restaurant we frequent most is O Chame in Berkeley. Homemade Udon and Soba... my favorite is smoked trout Udon. Pricey for noodles, but not pricey in general.
In SF I would eat at A16 every day for at least a couple of months. Yummy! On the days they were closed, I could do Yank Sing.
Ooh, so many options!
Sushi: Zushi Puzzle
Vietnamese: Saigon Sandwiches, Slanted Door
Pizza: Little Star Pizza, Delfina Pizza
Seafood: Anchor & Hope
American: Spork, Nopa,TownHall, Salthouse
Italian: Emmy's Spaghetti Shack, A16, Beretta
Mexican: Mamacita
thanks! keep them coming! with both cherryblossom and penguin recommending kokkari, we're going tonight!
I always recommend Zadin in the Castro for Vietnamese.
I love Boulevard and Jardinier for fancy food, but haven't had the opportunity/means to take advantage of something like that in a long time.
PAPALOTE in the mission is AMAZING!!! It's a healthy taq - corner of 24th and Valencia. I also love Dosa on Valencia and like 22nd - very reasonably priced and hip indian food. For fun girls nights out: to Lime on the Castro-end of Market - small plates and cocktails. My favorite higher-end restaurant is Firefly in Noe Valley - very delicious yet has a casual down to earth vibe. We went there to celebrate our engagement! So many more ... makes me miss SF! (I moved 3 years ago, but still visit often).
doctorgirl, good to know! I just moved to the Castro, so I'll have to try it!
Sushi Bistro is awesome in the richmond district. They got so much hype and so much business that they had to expand a few doors over! LOVE IT!
Gary Danko is definitely a favorite and so is Michael Minna. DROOOL!
The House is always a favorite for me! Love their Pomegranente Pork Chops and must get their Mango Tapioca Pudding dessert. DROOOOL.
You gotta get a sandwich from Little Saigon on Larkin Street? That shiet is the bomb. My favorite is the Fancy Pork, but Combination, Tofu, or even Siu Mai (Meatball) is drooltastic!
Circa is yummy - I drool over their Tomato bisque.
Za Pizza in Nob Hill is super thin, super tasty pizza.
Ice Cream at Bi Rite Creamery!
I second Gary Danko! Okay, so I never ate there because it's way out of my budget, but I hear about this place from so many people. Plus, one of my friends used to work there, and he always talked positively about the food and the chef! He recommended it definitely as a great celebratory place, so I'm waiting for a special occassion.
Pizzaiolo - Oakland (Telegraph)
Chez Panisse - Berkeley (Shattuck)
Zuni Café - San Francisco (Market St.)
Ennsaro - Oakland (Grand Ave)
I love ensarro. I just moved from lake merritt, I'm going to miss that and Jong Ga so much!
cherryblossom, you don't need to tell me about bi-rite. I live a few blocks from it now and I'm barely able to stop myself from eating it every day... so much creamy goodness.
I just went to Cafe15 today for lunch today! its in Oakland (14th street) just a hop skip and jump from the 12th street BART. So good. I had a steak and cheese sandwich and rosemary french fries. Yum!
I like Zachary's in Rockridge for Pizza.
I haven't been a lot of places in SF but now that I work at Embarcadero I hope I can add more to my list!
Just went to Nopa for the first time this weekend, and it blew me away!
We also love Suppenkuche (German) in Hayes for something fun and different and great beers.
I am also a big fan of Spork--trusty and fun date place in the Mission.
i don't go out much but i am quite fond of zachary's in berkely on solano ave. i love me some chicago deep dish pizza
Mmmm...I'm not in the city much, the these suggestions will be so helpful next time we make a trip up there! :)
oh man, I am all over this! My fiance and I are such foodies!
Orson: http://www.orsonsf.com/ Owned by Elizabeth Faulkner from Top Chef! The food is very creative and modern, not going to be your thing if you're a classic meat-and-potatoes girl. Beautiful industrial space. Great drinks too, but avoid Thursdays unless you want to go to a very crowded lesbian Happy Hour!
La Briciola: http://www.labriciola-sf.com/ the best Italian I've ever had. Kicks the a$$ out of any of the touristy places in North Beach. Fun fact- I live across the street!
Heaven's Dog: http://www.heavensdog.com/heavensdog.html Very modern Chinese food. The cocktails here are to die for.
Farmer Brown's: http://www.farmerbrownsf.com/ OH MY GOD. The best soul food ever. Also amazing cocktails. Fun modern/urban vibe.
5A5 Steak Lounge: http://www.5a5stk.com/ Great steaks, gorgeous loungey atmoshere, yummy drinks.
Terroir: http://terroirsf.com/ Fantastic wine bar, eclectic space. Owned by fun French dudes who are always playing old records.
Rickhouse: http://www.rickhousebar.com/ Classic and esoteric cocktails. Take some time to check out the drink meu, it's incredibly detailed. Don't just order a vodka tonic, the bartenders will hate you for being "that doucheb@g". Can get crowded as it's unfortunately located in the Fianancial District.
Several people also mentioned places I love:
BiRite Creamery (get the Salted Caramel)
Suppenkuche
Lime
Emmy's Spaghetti Shack
Beretta
Michael Mina
Anyway, the point of this long-winded post is to say that there are amazing restaurants and bars in SF, don't waste your time going to chains that cater to tourists! (hint: avoid North Beach, the Piers, and most of Union Square.)

The wedding rehearsal post got me thinking about restaurants in general. I need to branch out of my neighborhood more, so do people have any restaurants that are on the "if you do not eat here you will regret it every day for the rest of your life" list to recommend?
Any price range, from that awesome $2 sandwich place around the corner to places I should expect to drop a few hundred! Basically, I just want to eat.
