Oooh, Congrats from a Derm bee! I always have my patients wean off because it's a psychological thing, you need time to get used to seeing your skin at it's natural lighter state. Also, UV releases a bit of endorphins so have a small chocolate to reward yourself!
So the difference in the gradual tanners are that they have a smaller percent of DHA which is what pigments the skin and produces the smell...
I actually like the Neutrogena micro mist spray can to jump start things then I'll use the Oil of Olay Touch of sun SPF 20 everyday after. This helps to make sure your not streaky looking.
BTW you can shower 4hrs after to help with the smell and don't forget to exfoliate real well before you self tan. I actually skip the exfoliation to the knees and ankles till after I spray to prevent them from absorbing too much...
Kisses
Thank you so much for the great info! I am trying to prepare myself for the summer, it's awfully tempting to get in the sun after such a long, crummy winter. I will treat myself to an early tan instead!
I like Jergens Natural glow, it builds a little tan day by day so it doesn't get streaky and it has levels depending on your base color. I'm very very pale and it makes me have a nice natural glow, not orange at all.
L'oreal sublime wipes are the best. And my advice-- buy a 50 pack of medical gloves and use them while you're tanning. This way you don't end up with orange palms or orange nails and knuckles. I finish with the Loreal sublime spray, which helps cover up any streaks or differences.
Also, play around with self tanner when you don't have any events coming up. I've been using self tanner for a while now and I've gotten a lot better at it!
Props to you for staying out of the sun! :)
I'll second the plug for Jergens natural glow-- I like how it builds and it has never looked unnatural for me. Plus, it's very cost effective!!
I am so pale, my sister thinks I'm albino (i'm not- I swear). The only tanner that has ever worked on my Snow White skin and not looked orange is Neutrogena. It will give me a nice glow (the LIGHT spray) but it won't make me look orange.
I've been temped to try dark, just to see how I look :)
I love love love the Neutrogena Micromist tanning spray. It's never made me streaky. It's also great because it comes in different shades so you can use what works for your skin tone. Good luck! :)
i use Neutrogena Spray mist is great. goes on even and minimal smell too.
AND I also use Jergens build a tan, although i always feel like i can smell it....even after a shower.
I'm a big fan of Clarins. It's a bit pricey, but it doesn't have the nasty smell that a lot of self-tanners have.
i agree with sarakat28. jergen's natural glow is what i use when i want a nice sunkissed look. i also feel like i can control the application better because it's a lotion rather than a spray.
Call some of the salons in your area. I got an amazing spray on tan last year at my salon (about $50) and it lasted for 6 weeks. The girl used an all natural spray that was acutually made out of apples, it was delightful to smell and didn't look super fake.
How about good facial self tanners? That's been my biggest hurdle with self tanning...
Any suggestions?
I like Olay's Touch of Sun as a gradual self-tanner. The color isn't super dark, but it's natural and not too orangey. I like it better than Jergens Natural Glow because I think the smell is less noticable.
I really like St. Tropez mousse. It gives a nice natural looking tan that lasts and is easy to apply. My favorite body scrub to exfoliate with is Hempz Sandalwood body scrub.
@ Miss Pinot Grigio- For my face, I use St. Tropez too and mix it 50/50 with my daily moisturizer. I've found that that works really well. I've also heard good things about Lancome Flash Bronzer Instant Bronze Glow for the Face.
Kiehl's self tanner is amazing. I am very pasty, but it never looks orange or too dark. It is also user friendly, meaning I don't have to be a genius to make it not streak!
Hi,
I like Banana Boat dial a tan. It works great and it doesn't have an unpleasant odor like others. It does not rub off on clothes. I am pretty pale and when I use it once on the highest dial, I am noticable more tan the very next day. I usually exfoliate first at night then put it on, overnight you become tan!
I use FAKE BAKE and love it!! My daughter is an Esthetician and she recommended it. It is amazing, great color, very natural, so easy to apply!! 30.00 at Ulta. I use the lotion.
I found this post yesterday afternoon and ran to the store to try the Neutrogena Micro Mist tanner--just want to say thanks to the ladies that made recommendations! It was easy to apply, spread out evenly and I only have one spot that I messed up (my fault not the product--maybe I shouldn't have been watching So You Think You Can Dance while spraying myself down).
Does anyone have tips for upkeep? How often can you do this without looking orange?
I also think St. Tropez is the best at home self tanner, but I also love Mystic Tan... like the real mystic tan solution ... not the fake cheaper version that they claim is the same thing ... cause it's not and gives the worst results. I love it. The trick is that you have to get a manicure and pedicure right after you go get sprayed ... and also exfoliate before you go and put nothing at all on your skin.
So far I have been using Jergen's Natural Glow and so far so good but it only has been a few days. I am hoping to even out my farmers tan that I got from sitting in cars, lol.
Mmm...maybe I should try the jergens on the spot that I missed. I now have a little circle under my wrist where I had an itch--I was so into tv last night that I completely forgot I was drying.

I am phasing "laying out" out of my life, and I need to find a good self-tanner to help me with my tan. Do any of you have any personal favorites? I have heard good things about the gradual tan lotion stuff. Help!!
