I stopped for a bottle of Bailey’s last night for the white elephant at DH’s parents’ house tomorrow. All I could think was how much I’d rather keep it. Why didn’t I get 2???
What white elephant gifts do you usually get/give? I tend to pick the ones that looks like board games.

DH and I try to be creative – last year, we did a holiday survival kit. It was a Christmas tin with airplane bottles of alcohol, popcorn, ear buds, and some Advil. It was very popular – got stolen multiple times – and made people laugh.

This year I’m re-gifting all of my white elephant gifts. I received doubles of lots of things last year for Christmas so just kept them to put in the pile this year.
This year it’s the Sofa Butler (http://www.amazon.com/Storage-Dynamics-JB5811-Sofa-Butler/dp/B0046V34LG) and a smoothie machine.

…what’s a white elephant? I’m thinking it was a lucky elephant sculpture or something.

@MrsLongcoatPeacoat: oh! i just did that for the first time this year and hated it because i lost a nice gift!
it was a serving platter
the gifts that i gave were a box of chocolates and a collage picture frame
other people bought wine bottle sets, popcorn and candy sets, gift cards,
if you are going to a party where the gift needs to be for either sex, i would keep the gift neutral. I wouldn’t give bath stuff because a man won’t use that, candles or incense, possibly

Booze is always good, but I have received coffee/tea gift sets that were really good too.

@BellaDee: everyone brings a gift and you go around the room picking one of them. You unwrap it and everyone oohs and ahs. People who pick later can “steal” already opened gifts, and when you “lose” a gift you open another one. Sometimes gifts can only be stolen twice, so it’s not as if the last person can pick whatever they want.

@MrsLongcoatPeacoat: OH!!!! Man I wish we did this…

We’ll have to do this next year!

@BellaDee: It’s a good way to keep things fair if you set a dollar limit. It’s hard to do if it’s grownup and children, so we give the kids gifts and then do a white elephant with just adults. I always give booze; DH’s parents must think I’m a lush.

I give movie tickets with a gift certificate for food at the movies too. That seems to go over pretty well every time.
