I'm not a federal employee, but I'm a teacher, so all this budget stuff is affecting us, too.  Not a fun thing to be dealing with.  Just thought I'd pop in to say that you guys aren't alone, and you have my support!  I never realized how much it meant to hear that until things in our profession began to get sticky.

@tntrav44: I am in nursing, so I'm not worried about my job that much, but It's going to be harder without my support staff-- we feel the absence of every clerk, accountant, and floor polisher, trust me!

@helenberrycrunch: Understandable!  I'm in my third year of teaching, so I think my job is safe for the time being, but I know that when furloughing starts in our district, it's going to be felt everywhere.  Plus, you get so close to the people you work with!  I can't imagine not having my entire department around.

I'm not a federal employee, but this is stressing me out for my friends and family (and now Bees!). One of my friends is an AmeriCorps Vista worker, and another works for the Peace Corps (not overseas) and they have been going through the ringer with the two week extensions. One of them flat out told her boss that she just has to start looking for another job because she doesn't even know if her funding will be renewed post-shut down.

    Good luck everyone!

haha they sent out an email today saying they will let us know as they find out.  however it was in response to the Fed Employees filing a lawsuit demanding to find out what is going on.  we never get information in any kind of timely matter.

bringing in another post.... it'd sure be nice to be The Housewife about now.

I'm a federal employee, and we haven't been told anything.  I don't even know if we'll hear anything friday.. from what I heard, we'll have to show up Monday and be told whether we have to go home or not.  (Although I'm certain that my position would not be considered "essential.")  It's frustrating not knowing how long it will last if there is a shutdown..  I wish Congress could get their act together and compromise on SOMETHING.. I feel like federal employees have been getting the short end of the stick a lot lately and this just adds to it...

I don't expect to hear anything until Friday at the earliest. They won't make that decision until they have no other option.

I don't know what will happen, but we've been discussing plans at work.

I'm also a federal employee and we received an email several weeks ago guaranteeing that our section will not have a furlough week. Not sure if this is true or not...

Crazy, here's hoping for you guys.  My husband is a Canadian federal employee and we've been on no more than 1% wage wage increases and a hiring freeze for the last couple years, but no real lay offs, at least in his division.

FI is a federal employee, for the Corps of Engineers, and they discussed furlough today.  If the shutdown is not averted they will go into work on Monday (without pay of course) to go into the emergency shutdown plan...and turn in Blackberries, laptops, etc.

FI is less worried than I am, but it is pretty scary not knowing what is going to happen or how long it could last!

Wow, I am so out of the loop, I didn't even know this was going on.  I'm just a state employee, though.  We've taken a 4.6% pay decrease in the form of one monthly furlough day for the past 2 years now, wage/merit increases frozen and absolutely not allowed (not even cost of living increases), and a hiring freeze.  Our insurance has been stripped to a shit bare bones policy (my deductible has tripled and I now have to pay 20% of the cost of each visit) and our Governor wants to take away our furlough and permanently cut our pay by 5%.  Being a public employee sure sucks!  We're always getting the shaft!!

sorry, I know I'm not a federal employee but I just had to whine a little bit and this sounds worse than what I'm going through, if it actually happens...  I can't believe there might be a shutdown....I guess it's time go to read cnn.com!!!!

I am a federal employee. We received an email today stating that we have to report to work on Monday to see whether or not we will be furloughed. There are certain essential positions that have to stay. Only the higher-ups in my office are essential so I don't understand why they just can't tell us before. The email we got said we will receive pay for Monday for going in and getting our letter that says we are furloughed. There are a lot of websites out, including OPM, that says we should be able to file for unemployment.

If we truly have a furlough and it lasts a good amount of time, all my wedding savings will be gone. This situation is very stressful.

@akayh: FI was told today that after 7 days they can file for unemployment.

He was given the choice of furlough or to use annual paid vacation leave.  He chose to use his leave because we have virtually no savings, and I don't see how we could make it [possibly] several weeks without his income.  The last time the government shut down employees were given back the leave that they used, but that's not a definite.  We may have to change our honeymoon plans if the shutdown lasts too long.

i'm a federal employee and we've been getting updates every time the continuing resolutions come close, starting back in November i think when they were forseeing this becoming a problem. they've been getting a continuance at the 11th hour every time it seems so i'm not that worried but i am watching it.

I'm not a federal employee, but my husband is active duty Navy.  We found this information that says he'll still earn money, but not be paid until the budget is settled.

    http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=59615

I feel thankful that we'll at least be reimbursed, but of course I'm hoping if it does happen, it doesn't last long at all.  I'll be keeping you federally employed Bees in my thoughts and prayers.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous what they're doing to all of the federal employees, ESPECIALLY THE MILITARY!! I'm not a federal employee, but I'm enraged. Congressmen have tons of money, so they don't know what kind of shape that puts the everyday worker in to go weeks/months without a check. And even though they'll reimburse the military, I still that's the dirtiest thing they can do. If any position should continued to be paid, it should be our military. They're not pushing pencils, they're defending our country! Geez!!

Pretty much all of our friends and my SIL and BIL work for the government since we live in the DC area. It definitely sucks and I feel so bad that it has come to this point. I wish they would just figure this shit out. Leaving people without work/pay for an unknown period of time is ridiculous. Hopefully it wont last too long. :-(

Wishing all you fed bees the best

We haven't heard anything (we are both government employees).

I have heard that we are going to have to report on Monday to hear if we are furloughed but it hasn't been officially announced (just to supervisors).

I don't know what we will do without income if it lasts a while.

I am a federal employee and Mr. Lox is a federal contractor. Needless to say, losing income a month before our wedding is not something we're looking forward to. Right now we're not sure if we'll lose just my paycheck or his too.

I have to say, it looks pretty grim. We will be contacted via personal phone or email on Saturday if we get shutdown. Right now, everyone kind of expects that this is going to happen.

I swear you all, we are working in the only industry where we lose our paychecks because someone else can't do their job. Love it.

@sjs8906: That's really surprising. Official information from OPM states that paid leave cannot be used during a furlough. Not even by staff that's been deemed essential.

@lox: Yeah I thought the same thing.  I know we can't use leave (even essential personel can't because they need to be here).

The contractors we have here are going to keep working because they could actually sue the government if they aren't allowed to work their contract.

I'm a federal employee, I assume we will get email tomorrow night if we don't have to come in on Monday.  I think a few days wont' be the WORST thing (i.e. think of it as unpaid vacation).  Also, during the last shutdown they reimbursed the pay lost during that time (it's not a guarentee, but something to be hopeful for).

@sjs8906: Lox is right.  You CANNOT take leave for any time that you would otherwise be furloughed.  My understanding (via the Washington Post) is that some agencies are telling employees that they can take leave, but that is incorrect.  Excepted/essential employees (incl. military) WILL receive pay for time served during a shutdown, but not until after normal operations resume (so those workers may miss a paycheck if the shutdown goes more than a few days).

@mudratdetector:  You will not be able to use any government-issed laptop or blackberry during a shutdown - logging on is considered a Federal violation that can result in heavy fines or job termination.

I really feel for everyone in this situation - my husband and I included - it is so terrible to have so little information.  And the whole situation is extremely stressful.  The good news is that all sides have no choice but to keep working until this settled (unlike the 1995-96 shutdown when Congress went on a two week recess during the shutdown), so even if the government shuts down on Friday night, it is very possible that resolution could happen over the weekend and workers would return to work as normal on Monday.  (I do feel for all those 8th graders swarming DC right now - no museums!)

@jayelcee85: I work for the DoD, and as an FYI, the deployed military will be getting their paychecks (maybe slightly delayed but not like the civilans or non-deloyed where it may wait).

I am currently in a federally funded fellowship program and I am getting kind of nervous. The higher ups haven't said anything yet, I imagine they will wait until tomorrow or Monday to make any sort of official announcement. I am getting kind of nervous though, FI is currently unemployed, so if we lose my income, we will be eating up the down payment that we had been saving to put towards a house when we move in 2 months :(

I work as a contractor in a Federal office, but we aren't allowed to be here if there are no Feds in the building, so we can't work in a shutdown. We'll likely be able to use our own leave time so we can keep getting paid, but I don't have tons left after my honeymoon! I can make it about a week before I'll start having to go unpaid. They need to figure this out already.

I'm a former SI employee, and I can remember the stresses we had when there was talk that the trust was going to freeze wages for a few months. Thank goodness that got sorted, but I can only imagine the stress most of my friends are going through.
