Because it’s from Zales.
Backstory: When we first got engaged, we didn’t have money for a ring, so 7 months later, FH got his tax return and he bought a moissanite because it’s what I wanted. He said that at some point, he wanted to get me a real diamond because it was important to him.
Now that we’re looking into upgrading, he’s not thrilled with the setting I picked because it’s from Zales and it’s only a little more expensive than the moissanite that I already have. He thinks we should have it custom made because I’m getting one of my great grandmother’s diamonds, but we haven’t been able to find anyone to make anything similar within our price range. To me, it seems like he thinks we should spend $5000 on a new ring, but that’s not what I want. The set I want is under $1500. And it’s a set. He thinks I should have something huge (my ring is 1.1 carat).
He doesn’t seem to think that I can upgrade to something a little smaller so we can use my great grandmother’s diamond. I’ve tried talking to him, it was hard enough to talk him into using my great grandmother’s diamond, but he keeps telling me to look for something more expensive…
Men are complicated sometimes.

i wouldn’t want to buy a setting from Zales either, but only because they’re way overpriced for the quality and service that you get.
would love to see pictures though!!!

Personally, I would not trust my great grandmother’s diamond in a setting from Zales, or Kays, or any of those types of stores. I would go with a custom setting from a reputable jeweler mainly because I would not want to risk losing a family heirloom.

@SouthernGirl: I wonder if he’s worried that his friends/family/strangers/etc might think he’s cheap or can’t afford something more expensive. If that is the case, ask him which matters more, your happiness or other people’s opinion of his spending habits. If he has a ton of extra money to spend, maybe he could get you another piece of jewlery as a wedding present. That way, you’ll get the ring you love and he can feel good about spoiling you some.

I’m with him. I’m not a Zales fan or any other chain jewelry store for that matter. The price is sky high for the quality, and they’re constantly falsely inflating their prices up just to drop it down to “sale” price to make it look like an awesome deal.
You can definitely find affordably, high quality settings at a local, family-owned store.

I have a Zales setting and I LOVE IT! Ive never had any problems with it and the costumer service has always been awesome.

@MrsWBS: The problem is, the local jewelers are quoting way more than Zales for the same piece. There are four mom and pop jewelers here and all of them want more than the Zales price. I haven’t completely given up yet, there are other stores in towns near by. Only one has actually talked to me though. He said that he might be able to make it in platinum for us but it’s not a sure thing and I haven’t heard back from him in almost two months despite me calling every so often.

@SouthernGirl: It sounds like he wants you to spend more than the Zales band…so if he’s paying, why not go with the mom and pops? Chances are their service and quality will be far better than you would receive from a chain store

That is weird that the locäl jewelers are quoting more than Zales. Did they give a reason?
If there are melee/sidestones in the design, are they assuming the same quality of those stones? They might be assuming that a much better quality of stones need to be sourced.
Sorry to hear you can’t find a local jeweler to at least match the Zales price…that is really a bummer.

Don’t buy from Zales! You can get custom for the price you mentioned!! I can think of three vendors that would do it for that amount…depending on the details and it will be everything you want. Chain stores are rip offs

@joya_aspera: They say that the details on the band will require a lot of time, which I understand, but the price difference is ridiculous. One store quoted me $3000 and another said $2100. The one guy that said he was willing to work with me quted $2300 for it to be done in platinum, but as I said, he hasn’t returned any of my calls in two months, so I’m guessing he’s out. FH did a little research himself on his lunch break at work and he told me he was going to call another jewelry store in a town about 30 minutes away. One of his coworkers recently got engaged and that’s where he got his ring for his girlfriend. FH still has three weeks before his tax return comes in, so we still have time to look around. I am just bummed that we’re having so much trouble finding something reasonable.

If he wants to spend money on you, let him! It will make him feel proud and happy. As life goes on, you will have more bills and more responsibilities and there will be less spoiling each other; at least in my case. 😉 So if he wants to get you something extra special, I say let him!

Zales is pretty poor quality. I would definitely look elsewhere. Post a photo of what you want, maybe we can help!

Why not check around other sites that make settings without the center stone? deBebians.com is one–they just need the dimensions of the center stone and they make they setting specifically for you.
