What about including some 18th c decor things, but not so much that it’s really THEME-y? But just have the decor have that sort of feel/vibe? Would he go for that? I think you could still make it nice and elegant if you did that.

You should start by getting some inspiration over at Offbeat Bride. There are some awesome goth-esque weddings that are incredibly elegant:

As far as you two not agreeing on everything, you’ve admitted to being “a bit of a control freak.”….you gotta stop that. The key to this is compromise: if he gets to pick the cake theme (and it happens to be unique), then you get to pick centerpieces. Make sure he feels his personality is reflected in the day as well.

Could you maybe use some Star Wars music for the ceremony? Would he like that?

To be honest my SO let me plan everything and then all of the sudden he had some ideas that was completely opposite to what I had already planned and I tried to be supportive and compromise but he kept changing his mind and in the end actually for the most part went with what I had in mind anyway. There are a few things that he felt strongly about (no confetti of any kind, no cheesy music, no hearts in the decor, the first dance song, the venue, food etc) and we decided on those together and then I have got to get on an just plan the details and decor myself. I ask for his opinion but mostly he trusts my taste and tells me to go with what I like.

It sounds like you are at that point when everyone has an opinion (we’ve all been there) but you have to try to stay strong and do what is right for both of you. In my experience guys generally struggle to see the overall big picture and how things will tie together so maybe get a mood board with a few ideas together and pitch it to your SO.
